New to Baseball (Questions, etc)

Because of this game:

Awesome game, I remember manually changing all the fake names to the real ones. Still remember being the Tigers one season and hitting close to 80 homers with Mickey Tettleton.

It was the 1st sport I played growing up and the only sporting events I went to for the 1st 7-8 years of my life. Just has always been a part of me, and while hockey has surpassed it by leaps and bounds as my favorite sport, and I enjoy watching football more than it now (I just can't watch random games with teams I don't care about during the season like I can hockey and football), I still consider it to be my 2nd favorite as it's my favorite to play, the most interesting considering how it's so much different than any other American sport, and since it's such a huge part of my summer.
Ditto and a Cubs fan so I still enjoy it.

As much as football tries to supplant baseball as THE American sport, baseball is still the grand American pastime.

so, heading for Milwaukee and Chicago this coming week for holiday on my own

I'm looking at tickets for the Royals game saturday, and as a beginner should i sit next to the field or higher up to get a view?

I don't really know any players or teams that are good, but seeing there is field seats for 15 bucks makes me think the Brewers and Royals are no fan favourites?

If i like it i might try to get a ticket for Cubs next week, a friend keeps telling me that wrigley field is a must, even though i'm not a fan

i prefer to sit farther back from the field. you get a better look at things. try to sit as close to behind home plate as you can. when you move too far up the lines, i feel like you get robbed of seeing things on the other side of the field.

that's milwaukee. i'd say anything near press box is a good seat. the royals "might be" good for the fifth year in a row. if everything goes as planned for the brewers they're probably in fourth place again.

It's still spring training, that's why the tickets are that cheap. They probably won't even open the club or terrace levels (top 2 levels) unless they get insane demand, which I wouldn't expect. My favorite level at Miller Park is the loge (2nd level). If you can get tickets between sections 215 and 222, I'd go for that.

I sat in 215 when I was there. I can vouch for this. Incredible sightlines, great food and bathroom access, etc...

I've been a baseball fan all my life, but I started thinking about this this year. Why is spring training as long as it is? It seems like we all wish the season would be shorter and not end in November, yet we have a month worth of meaningless baseball and this final week feels like a waste more than anything else. Is it a pitcher thing? Is it a hitters thing? Is it both? Is it just revenue for Florida and Arizona? Wish the season started this week.

Ah true
I just had a look at the Cubs home opener :sarcasm:

just got my ticket for saturday, section 220

Is there something i should look for, any special players, are these teams any good
any food to recommend
I'll definitly grab some beer :)

Ryan Braun will be back from his suspension, so there's that. The Royals have a couple good, young players. Eric Hosmer and Sal Perez to name a couple. Hopefully Carlos Gomez plays and gets some balls hit to him so you can watch him play defense.

As far as food. You need to get a brat with the secret stadium sauce. I saw your post on the Blackhawks board so if you have any questions about Milwaukee or anything else, feel free to PM me, so I don't clutter up this thread with something not involving baseball.

I'm an American league guy and need some help to understand the NL boxscore from last night

San Diego AB R H RBI BB SO LOB AVG
Cabrera, E, SS 2 1 0 0 1 2 2 .000
Denorfia, RF-LF 4 0 2 2 0 0 0 .500
Headley, 3B 4 0 0 0 0 2 3 .000
Gyorko, 2B 3 0 0 0 1 2 2 .000
Alonso, 1B 4 0 0 0 0 2 5 .000
Medica, LF 3 0 1 0 1 1 2 .333
Street, P 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Venable, CF-RF 3 0 1 0 0 0 1 .333
Rivera, R, C 2 0 0 0 0 1 2 .000
a-Smith, S, PH 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 1.000
Amarista, CF 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Cashner, P 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Vincent, P 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Torres, A, P 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
Thayer, P 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000
b-Grandal, PH-C 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 .000

Smith pinch hit for the catcher, Grandal pinch hit for the pitcher. Grandal took catching duties in the 9th. Venable moved to rf, denorfia to lf, Medica out of the game. Amarista entered the game in cf and Street was the new pitcher. But why Street took the 6th spot in the batting order and Amarista 8th ?

To simplify:

Grandal came in for Thayer
Amarista came in for Smith who pinch hit for Rivera
Street came in for Medica

Just ignore the positions because you can switch positions freely.

Thanks ! So if I understand, it was also possible for Street to come in for Smith and Amarista for Medica and that's just a manager decision?

Yea. I didn't watch the game, so I don't know where the inning ended with the order but if like Medica or Venable made the last out of the inning it makes sense putting Street in Medica's spot opposed to Rivera/Smith's or Thayer's.

Playing hockey videogames really helped me learn about the game, especially following the puck. Id imagine it'd be the same for a new baseball fan too.
