I agree that Matthews is actually very underrated as a forechecker and is definitely one of the best at stealing pucks/picking up loose pucks. The issue there is the opportunity cost. You'd probably rather have someone else doing the digging and having Matthews manoeuvre into a soft spot or scoring location, considering his shooting ability.

I do agree there is an opportunity cost for sure. I'd say part of the reason Hyman never really worked for me on that line is his puck retrieval skills, while great, rarely materialized into plays in scoring positions for his linenates because of his subpar vision and passing skills.

Enter the ghost of Joe Thornton, who can still make a great NHL pass and still sees the game well, and the line doesn't miss a beat even in spite of Thornton's horrible foot speed.

Richie had 4 wingers ahead of him on Boston and we are penciling him in in the 1st line……….my god are we in trouble.
Now add Bunting in on the 2nd line………….seriously in trouble

Nick Ritchie was on the Bruins 2nd line LW most of the up until the trade deadline last year. And only got pushed down because they got Hall for a steal.

He's got 2-3 wingers ahead of him here depending on how you categorized players. And our configuration doesn't require us to have high end top 6 players in top 6 LW roles to be successful (even if we'd all love that). Example: Zach Hyman.

You've said this multiple times and you are making a mountain of a molehill.

I guess time will tell

Bunting may well prove to be a good fit for that line, but I disagree with the idea that Matthews and marner need someone to retrieve the puck for them. They never have. And Matthews specifically has been as good as anyone on this team at taking pucks from people. He's actually kinda a beast
They might not need it, but it complements their games further. There’s not a LW on the roster that you would rather have the puck rather than M/M. I’d rather that winger retrieves pucks, do the dirty work and then hand it off.

Boston wingers last year:

1. Marchand 18:55
2. Pastrnak 18:37
3. Ritchie 15:22
4. Debrusk 14:54
5. Smith 14:04
6. Bjork 12:18 ---> Hall 15:58
7. Wagner 11:41
8. Frederic 11:15

Am I the only person somewhat underwhelmed by every single forward lineup that's been presented in this thread? Man, the depth is terrible now. Outside of the big 4, every single forward is...meh. Granted I don't know a lot about the new pickups, maybe they'll surprise me.

I feel the same. I wish we had a promising prospect to play with the Big 4. Someone you know that will have a serious impact on the forward lines. Hard to look forward to whatifs and maybes.

What do you mean by 2yr scoring paces?

What's the first number? Goals/Points?
I'm guessing he has looked at their past 2 years and normalized all the data for an 82 game season. Definitely is goals and points but there are some really small sample sizes for guys like Bunting, Caufield etc

I keep thinking we can use one more Alex Galchenyuk. Underwhelming sure, but we need some more options for the mix and match.

The maple leafs and dubas have probably given totally up on robertson sire. He is not mentioned nowhere and the predictions does not say any of the robertson dirt. I'm seeing dreams every other night of him being shipped, sailing or not playing. Its weird milord.

Imagine if we could've retained these guys:

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Brown
JVR-Kadri-Kapanen
Johnsson-Bozak-Spezza

it would never be doable cap-wise, but man we've had some sick forwards.

I wouldn't mind Bozak in a pseudo Spezza role either on minimum contract. Also, I wonder if NJ would ever give us Andreas Johnsson back at 50% retained? That would be a cap hit more in line with his actual value.

Tried my best to line up the small/outlier samples against each other. That's why Bunting moves around in the comps.
