Put Dermott, Liljegren, and Sandin's numbers in a bingo machine and play the number that comes up. All three have flaws and are marginal players on a Stanley Cup defence. They don't offer the one thing this team needs and used very well last year...a Bogosian type of defenceman. I thought Sandin was terrible last night. His flaws that we saw in the playoffs are still evident, slow, small, and not strong enough. Liljegren did nothing to improve his stock, and we know Dermott hasn't taken the big step yet either. Thank goodness we have two great ones in Brodie and Muzzin, and a very good one in Rielly.

If you want young D developed the best way - they need to be put in prominent roles and the coach needs to accept their flaws and let them get their reps there.

Leafs haven't done this with any of Sandin, Liljegren or Dermott. All they've given Dermott is low-end bottom pair minutes and they've refused to try him in a bigger role. Sandin just keeps getting yo-yo'd in and out of the lineup.

Ritchie (14.5) - Matthews (20.5) - Marner (20)
Bunting (15) - Tavares (18.5) - Nylander (18.5)
Kerfoot (15) - Spezza (11) - Kase (12)
Mikheyev (13) - Kampf (13.5) - Simmonds (8)

Spezza gets some quality linemates, Kampf's line is matchups & d-zone starts, Simmonds minutes are limited.

Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Kase
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Nylander
Engvall-Kampf-Spezza

I see I am not the only that wonders where Simmonds fits.
I got Kase and Nylander swapped to start the season, and Ho-Sang as the 13th forward.
Ho-Sang can fill in for Kase (who is has a history of missing games), or Spezza when he needs games off.

Lilly and Sandin are waiver exempt, so I can see musical chairs in the D with them taking turns.

This ain't it, folks.

Liljegren did nothing to improve his stock
Making a strong breakout pass was like baby food to him, he was best on the ice in that regard. To me he looked really steady & had strong aggressive gap control all night. Even though the competition was light he was out against Montreal's better players for a lot of the night.

The problem with the Leafs is that they are in win now mode. Sandin’s flaws cost us directly two games against the Habs in the playoffs. Not being strong enough and shying away from a hit and slow foot speed leading to goals. I saw the same thing last night along with inopportune pinches. Our biggest need is a big strong shutdown defenceman.

Lily is actually easier to fit into the lineup. Not as flashy as Sandin, but he is better defensively.

I said that we should have acquired another D this offseason, and I was annoyed that Bogosian left too.

It still annoys me how little shooting ability we have from the back end, and I honestly think it's part of the reason our offense always goes to shit in the playoffs. You need to be able to score those greasy goals in the playoffs, and you need D who know how to put it on net to make those goals happen.

Whaaa? How do you know that already? He's played 13 NHL games, he's still a complete unknown as to what he can contribute in the NHL.

Yeah I've said it before but I would send Sandin down to the Marlies before Lilly.

A Dermott-Lilly pair is actually a sweet bottom pair - both are rock solid physically and extremely mobile and capable with the puck.

Problem is they're looking at Sandin to help on the PP.

They can always use Holl at PP.
I agree with you, I think Lilly is actually a safer Dman on the ice than Sandin.
I mentioned on another thread or this one. Sandin can be amazing for 59mins and 40secs of the game but in that 20 secs, he would either gets out muscled or out skated by opposing player and end up allowing a goal.

Love Sandin but he’s good to give up a breakaway per game

Sandin might need minutes in NHL to close the gap between AHL and NHL. Could be worth the gamble. Yeah i know "NHL aint a development league" . For some players it should be. For some players it pays off big time.

Honestly I would just give Liljegren the secondary PP minutes then. Hold off on the PK for now unless one of Dermott/Holl/Muzzin/Brodie are in the box.

He's still a decent offensive player and he looks like he can be steady 5 on 5.

Both Lili and Sandin are going to have learning curves adjusting to the best league in the world. Like most players before them.
Expect some errors and some mistakes. But support them to learn from them, rather than vilify them, and they’ll be fine.

It’s not about vilifying them. If this was 4 years ago and they’re. at their present stage of development, I say put both in the lineup. But we’re trying to set up a Stanley Cup winning team. They’re not what we need right now to fulfill that. Like IPS said, which of these two has the great shot? Which is the big banger?

No it doesn’t. This is some sort of urban legend that guys on HF boards who forgot that special teams exist keep preaching

Won’t be an issue getting all the stars around 20-22 when you include power play time together, loading up a line for the last min of each period or 2 minutes of 6 on 5 together

What happens when the game has 1 or 2 penalties?

He is not fast enough in AHL 2nd round playoffs either .. it depends on his match ups .. he does very well against bigger stronger men who are slow .. he gets into trouble in a fast game where he can't keep up to pace of game

They both need to see significant time in the lineup this year. One of our biggest coaching failures last year was not getting these 2 more nhl experience

What u lack in speed u need in IQ, Might be a order too tall then.

Not liking what I see from Sandin this preseason so far. He hasn't improved his foot speed and it's holding him back. I think he should start season with Marlies and be first injury replacement.

I like the idea of spreading out the depth on defence and have liljegren with Muzzin and that would keep Holl more fresh for PK duties as he gets so gassed.

Depth is good to have. Chances are a D will go down with an injury in preseason, it’ll be nice to have solid young D ready to step in. We won’t be picking Dermott or Liljegren over anybody. We’ll see how Menell does tonight and we might have another Right handed D to call on.
