Not that I think Simmonds deserves to be on this opening roster by merit, but its just not a typical move a hockey team makes.
Bunting Matthews Nylander
Ritchie Tavares Marner
Kerfoot Kampf Mikheyev
Kase Spezza Simmonds
Not sure Ritchie can keep up with the heavy minutes Matthews line will get.
That 3rd line can shutdown any line in the league and have the speed to generate or match up
The 4th line is an interesting combo of energy(Looking at you Simmonds) and shooting when they get a chance.
Lots of valid points made here.
-Yes leaving Simmonds off of an opening night roster is unlikely. As much as his play does not warrant it, he is a vet and well respected player in that room. He will likely get the opening night game, and continue to get games until we need a shakeup. My guess is that he will be the first one out of the lineup.
-I actually think Ritchie would have to do more on the JT line than he would the Matthews line. Marner and Matthews are great possession players, and Nick would really just have to find the open areas on the ice. He wouldn't be seeing PP1 likely and he definitely wont see PK1, so his minutes will be managed just in that capacity IMO. In contrast, playing with JT requires a stronger cycle presence and Willy and JT really seemed to thrive when they added a strong F1 player like Galchenyuk last year. To me Bunting is a better version of Gally. I really see that as an ideal fit.
-Kampf and Kase have played together in both of their pre-season games. They've played together in the past in the Czech league, and have shown a really strong chemistry through 2 games. I just can't see them being on different lines
-Lastly, I do agree, there is an element of Ritchie's game that is a huge question mark for me. I do see it working on the top line, but I also see games where he is visibly holding Mitch and Auston back. If Ritchie were to falter on the top line, I wouldn't keep him in the top 6 at all. Similar to Jumbo last year. The way I see it is, if you cant consistently play with Matthews and Marner as your liney's, who the f*** can you play with in a top 6 role?? I'd put him straight down the lineup on the 4th line, try and wake him up a bit. It would not be a permanent move, but more so a wakeup call. I'd then move Kerfoot up the lineup and run something like this:
Kerfoot - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - JT - Willy
Micheyev - Kampf - Kase
Ritchie - Spezza - Ho-Sang
Again this is not my opening night roster, just the roster I'd ice in the event of needing a top line shake up during the season
