My opening night lineup:

Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Bunting-Tavares-Nylander
Kerfoot-Kampf-Kase
Mikheyev-Spezza-Simmonds

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Dermott-Holl

Campbell
Mrazek

Id like to see Mikheyev moved since he will once again not like his bottom 6 role. Put Robertson in that spot.
I like the D pairings with Liljegren on the team....however I feel it'll likely be Sandin making the team because management seems to favour him

It’s funny for all the anti depth talk we get from opposing fans, we have extra nhl caliber players at every position. Instead of paying hyman big bucks at the expense of adding another nhl player like we did with the big 4, Dubas let’s him walk and goes for quantity over quality. Lo and behold, he’s sh it on for that too. Shocker. If one of bunting Ritchie Robertson or mikheyev can put up 40+ points and another 30+. That’s a pretty deep forward group.

I just don't see how Mikheyev is enough better than Engvall to justify the extra roster spot his cap hit represents

@Dion TheFluff

mikheyev is faster, plays heavier and more consistently, goes to the net, penalty kills, and is better defensively. Mikheyev has the motor.

Engvall vs Mikheyev is an easy choice imo

Salaries equal being forced to play one in the top 9, sure. But as 4LW with limited EV minutes + PK, and one allowing us to have 13th forward, one not... different question, different answer.

personally, even with the cap difference, I take Mikheyev in either role. He’s simply the better player and offers us more, especially if injuries happen and he is forced up the lineup

That Bunting re-direct displayed more offensive IQ than I've seen from Mik in all his games here. The way he positions himself to Amadio and then re-adjusts when Amadio passes to Brodie and sneaks in for the re-direct between 3 Habs players. Then the re-direct itself looked effortless. Bunting should definitely be in the top 6 with JT and Nylander.

We might indeed have a 50 point Marchand-lite on our hands here.

I don't either but it sounds like Engvall is likely getting waived. Otherwise I would have Engvall over Mikheyev.

Engvall seems to be in Keefe's dog house for whatever reason

Simmonds isn't really good but could be a good swap in vs more physical opponents.

and Dermott hasn't really progressed at all and would probably only be marginally if not at all better than Sandin and Liljegren. Would much rather give the opportunity to those 2 an opportunity to prove themselves and then put Dermott in if one of them falters

So we hang onto Mik who wants out and probably walks this summer for nothing and we waive Engvall and lose him for nothing. Might be wiser to trade Mik and replace him with the cheaper Engvall.

Spezza has played at a 40 point pace the last 2 seasons as well and Kase (if healthy) is a big wildcard as well to. Heck even a guy like Ho-Sang or Guesev could potentially put up 30 - 50 points if put in the proper role.

Our depth issues are heavily overblown. Just because we don't break the bank for depth doesn't mean it won't be good.

He should, in theory, be able to be moved for a decent return, given the presumed winger depth the team has.

I agree. In no way do I think we’re Tampa of the last couple years depth wise, but there’s enough there to be pretty solid all around.

The trouble with all of this is that they don't have enough roster spots to have any depth at all.

With only 21 players there's not much to rotate in or out. The only extras you have are one on the roster and the others that pass through waivers. Very few are waiver-exempt.

The Leafs could really use a 23-man roster now.

All those extradite signings could very easily be lost like Aaron Dell, McBackup etc etc. Not much use to the Leafs except to create competition in training camp.

With such a small roster you hope they make the right cuts, that's all.

Perhaps..... but there isn't enough room for everyone on the big club so it's either trades or waiver risks for 2 or 3 NHL calibre players.

Since he's requested a trade and should fetch a decent return, seems to be a likely candidate.
No room to even sign Ho Sang without sacrificing someone who might otherwise rotate in from the press box.

Unless the Leafs move a salary, they're playing for keeps with the roster right out of training camp.

He is worth more to the team than his trade value
If you can't trade someone like Mikheyev, then get ready to waive goodbye to two lesser-paid players in his place when the season opens.

It's unlikely that everyone passes through waivers.

yeah I’m aware. And I’m not worried about it. Ice the best team. Period.

engvall is the guy you trade away.

Put Dermott, Liljegren, and Sandin's numbers in a bingo machine and play the number that comes up. All three have flaws and are marginal players on a Stanley Cup defence. They don't offer the one thing this team needs and used very well last year...a Bogosian type of defenceman. I thought Sandin was terrible last night. His flaws that we saw in the playoffs are still evident, slow, small, and not strong enough. Liljegren did nothing to improve his stock, and we know Dermott hasn't taken the big step yet either. Thank goodness we have two great ones in Brodie and Muzzin, and a very good one in Rielly.
