I feel we should have signed Nikita Gusev to a PTO and tried him out next to Tavares and Nylander. I think those guys would help mask his flaws (poor defensive play, poor puck carrying, weak shot) and benefit from his strengths (passing and playmaking). All he’d have to do is get the puck to Nylander in transition then get open to make plays in after Willy gains the zone. JT could bury his passes. Keefe being a more lenient coach would give him the time to settle and would overlook the occasional turnover. He’d be a perfect fit on PP2 as well. There is tremendous offensive upside there but he needs an absurdly specific role to realize it and I think that line would be one of the places he could find it.

A cheap PTO would be worth a shot in my mind.
I'd sign Gusev and trade Mikheyev.

Gusev has top 6 skill. Save some cap space too.

Ritchie - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Kampf - Mikheyev
Simmonds - Engvall - Spezza

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Liljegren

Is it ideal? No. But our entire cap situation isn’t ideal and what causes this. What is your suggestion to move Kerfoot into the top six and Bunting on the third line? Sure, makes some sense but then it also absolutely kills our depth even more. When you got 11.6 million in Matthews, 10.9 million in Marner yes I do think they should be able to carry a guy like Ritchie.

im taking a different approach. The whole left side is pretty interchangeable amongst all the players available. ......... so... duh the pre season will sort that out that chemistry between the players. I think its safe to assume the following C/RW combinations (and no, kase shouldnt be included in any formation because ill believe hes healthy when i see it)
LW = kerfoot, ritchie, bunting, robertson, simmonds

LW - matthews - marner
LW - tavares - nylander
LW - kampf - mikheyev
LW - brooks/engvall - spezza

now if i were keefe i would break up marner and matthews, just because the tavares/nylander combo sucks. I think having the following gives us a much better top 6. Also having both lines hover around the same amount of ice time

LW - matthews - nylander
LW - tavares - marner
LW - kampf - mikheyev
LW - brooks/engvall - spezza

Another solid option I think would be,

Ritchie - Matthews - Nylander
Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner
Bunting - Kampf - Mikheyev
Simmonds - Engvall - Spezza

Ritchie - Matthews - Marner

Simmonds - Kampf - Spezza Mikheyev
Having Spezza and Kampf on the same line appears to be counterproductive in my opinion. They play completely different roles (Kampf as defensive as they come and Spezza as the offensive threat/ mismatch against other team's 4th) You add to that the fact that they are 2 of only 5 natural centers on the team- the 5th being Brooksy who isn't in your lineup.

I think that they have to split the two up.

I may be in the minority here, but I really liked Simmonds with Matthews and Marner. I found that that was when he was the most noticeable last year.

Simmonds Matthews Marner
Ritchie Tavares Nylander
Bunting Kampf Soup
Kase Spezza Kerfoot

That's a pretty strong bottom 6 IMO.

somebody put an explainer when coming up with lines as to why a 11 AAV center requires an 11 AAV winger or 11 AAV winger requires an 11 AAV center

why not have three 11 AAV guys driving three lines?

Were probably the only two lol but that's where I would like to see Simmonds. That's providing his wrist is fully healed.

The way I see it, Marner and Matthews turn a lot of 5v5 shifts into virtual power plays, and just need a guy with good hands down low to keep the D honest.

I also think Simmonds would be good at pick retrieval when they are sustaining pressure in the zone. He doesn't give you the first-man-in that Hyman did, but I'm not sure how effective Hyman was once he got the puck. A lot of ineffective wraparounds.

One thing though is that Simmonds cannot play M&M type minutes. So maybe just give him the OZ starts and sub in guys like Kerfoot and bunting to keep Simmonds minutes under control. Also worth noting that Ritchie had some of the same abilities and has youth in his side.

You could trade Mikheyev and sign Galchenyuk AND Gusev for the same cost.
If he doesn't want to be here, I don't want him here. He has had stints in the top 6. He played in the top 6 almost exclusively with Tavares-Marner after he came back from injury and into the qualifying round against Columbus. He's little more than a fast skater that is defensively responsible. He doesn't hound the puck along the boards as well as a Hyman, and he possesses little to no finishing ability. Pretty hard to whine about not being in the top 6 when you haven't pushed your way there at all. He's a bottom 6 winger on any other team in the league, and it's no different here. Would much rather see his spot go to a guy like Robertson, Anderson, Ho-sang, Gusev, or Galchenyuk if we re-signed him after moving on from Mikheyev. Lots of competition and guys hungry to be Leafs. Really hope we move on from him before season starts

Like your lineup a lot. My tweaks would be your bottom 6. I thought Brooks made Spezza & Thornton into a good 4th line..so I think he would make Spezza & Simmonds into an even better 4th line (Simmonds >Thornton). Engvall just disappears too much for my liking. Strong showings when he gets inserted, and then tails off after he feels "safe" in his lineup spot. Also, I shoot Mikheyev to any team for draft picks since he's whining about not having undeserved top 6 minutes, and give his spot to Kase (if healthy), and if not then one of the kids in Robertson it Anderson who are hungry to play and bring some tenacious forechecking.
Kerfoot-Kampft-Kase
Simmonds-Brooks-Spezza

I like the rest of your lineup

Im also one that likes what a healthy Simmonds can bring to the top 6. Also pushes some good guys into the bottom 6 and has the potential to create better balance in my opinion. However, Simmonds is a natural RW, and Nylander can switch to LW seemlessly. So if be more tempted to go:
Ritchie-Matthews-Marner
Nylander-Tavares-Simmonds

In such a scenario

There really is so many options up front...In a way.

Set in STONE we have something along these lines...

Ritchie Mathews Marner
Tavares Nylander
Kerfoot Kampf
Spezza Simmonds

Not suggesting Ritchie should play first line. But he is definitely a lock to play.

This leaves 3 forward spots up for grabs for the following players.
Bunting, Engvall, Brooks, Kase, Roberstson, Mickeyev, Ho-Sand, Petan, Gusev, Gabriel

IMO its probably that Micheyev, Kase, and Bunting take these spots on opening night. I also expect that Gusev, Engvall, Brooks, and Roberston see some playing time.
