Matthews wanted Hyman.

Where did you get this from?

The only time I'd ever heard anything about Matthews thoughts on Hyman was back when Babs was coaching and Hy was getting a high percentage of his goals when the opposition had no goalie at the end of games. Hy was all bull in a China Shop, lots of effort but little skill, he would forecheck the opposition and win many battles but wasn't able to do positive things with the puck. AM requested that Hy be taken off of his line.

I thought Hy should've been a 3rd liner like he was last year with Mickhey and Eng , he never looked more impressive, he was that line's driver, he wasn't playing against the opposition's best which freed him to be one of the better players on the ice. A superior 3rd liner, nothing wrong with that, Marleau was worth $6 mil. to Lou and the Leafs.

Hy was having many injury issues, last year AM and MM were able to put up very impressive numbers with 42 year old Thornton on their line while Hy was rehabbing, Thornton wasn't of any assistance to them and I've always felt Hy wasn't essential to AM and MM either. He was a place holder until someone better became available.

The team played its best with the HEM/ZIP line intact so of course Keefe broke it up for the playoffs so Hyman could return from injury playing 22 min a night

what an atrocious coach

The year that Matthews played with Hyman and Nylander, there were rumblings that he didn’t want Hyman on his line.

The next year, when Hyman played with Tavares and Marner, there were rumbling that he went to the coaches and asked to have Hyman back.

Ritchie - Matthews - Nylander
Bunting - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Mikheyev - Spezza - Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Liljegren

Mrazek - Campbell
Mikayev on the 4 th line
No wonder He wants to leave …..

That's why if by some miracle Kase can stay healthy even for a little bit - I want to see him on the top line. He would bee the most skilled winger for Matthews/Marner to play with and he still plays a very tenacious game.

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Ritchie-Tavares-Nylander
Kase-Kerfoot-Spezza
Mikeyev-Kampf-Simmonds

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Liljegren

1PP
Ritchie (Net front)-Matthews-Nylander
Rielly-Marner

2pp
Simmonds-Tavares-Bunting
Muzzin-Liljegren
I likes your lines and they will happen. Although our Captain for life, Johnny Tavares will always, always start the first power play unit from now on sire. Always, like the italians say with an accent.

I'm starting to wonder if we maybe go like this:

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
Ritchie-Kerfoot-Kase
Engvall-Kampf-Spezza/Anderson

Mikheyev would score 17 goals during the season and still soft that thang up sire! FOR LIFE!

If Mikheyev looks like he did when he first came here, I wouldn't be opposed to putting him in the top 6. Also, I know its not likely to happen but I hope they find a 7D

So be it line combos:

Ritchie Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Bunting Kampf Simmonds
Mikheyev Spezza Kase
If I've got miself Ritchie, Bunting and Robertson locked up for the first line, what would you give me a chance of percentage to get it right this season sire? Like 99%? 92%? I think Ritchie is a lock itself, but if I got these two suckas locked down too,... I would be getting it right no?

Ritchie Matthews Marner
Mikheyev Tavares Nylander
Keefoot kampf Kase
Bunting speeza Simmonds

I think that’s what we see if we have healthy line up for game 1.

This is what I would like to see

Ritchie Matthews Nylander
Keefoot Tavares Marner
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Bunting Speeza Engvall

lots of things are said in Toronto that have no truth to them whatsoever. Sounds like a lot of media speculation

It sounds like something people who like Hyman will believe and people who don’t won’t.

not really at all, but you can go with that. I like Hyman and I don’t believe it’s likely true. There doesn’t seem to be anything remotely resembling a source to this information, so it doesn’t merit being believed

Robertson is looking strong in Rookie camp. Man amongst boys type of difference. He’s started out strong here and looks really strong. Maybe that waiver exempt tag won’t be holding him back after all.
Dubas can watch him the entire camp and then move Mikheyev when he has a full evaluation that says Robertson can take his roster spot.
I would rather it if Robertson in the lineup and to hell with losing a year of slide if he’s good enough. I will reserve decision until we see him in main camp but he looks good.

Is it really that big of a loss if he does? He’s as good as gone regardless after this year considering he’s a UFA.
Agreed. Don't wanna be here? Don't. Has done nothing to earn anything above third- fourth line minutes. Skates like the wind, and doesn't do much else. His speed makes him effective as a PKer. Know where most PK guys on other teams play? In the bottom 6. Rather Robertson or Anderson take his spot. Anderson is a good candidate as he has PK abilities, and plays with more aggression. I understand not looking desperate to move Mikheyev and acting like we want keep him... keep his price up in the eyes of others. But ultimately we should sell on him before puck drops on game 1

Here's a cap picture with Engvall buried (125k hit) & others either waived or in the minors. I'm guessing Joey Anderson takes the last spot considering he's waiver eligible, unless somebody surprises in camp/preseason; once they accumulate some cap, guys like Robertson, Liljegren, & Brooks/Engvall (if unclaimed) could start getting called up to the lineup too.

I'm hoping Robertson is that surprise that pushes management to open up a spot for him though. I think he could get another crack on either of the JT or Spezza lines. A 4th line of Robertson - Spezza - Kase could be pretty dangerous; that's some high potential scoring depth.

Unless someone impresses at camp, I don't think Galchenyuk has been signed yet. Wouldn't mind him back, even when he wasn't scoring I think he made nice place and was working on the D side of things.

I feel we should have signed Nikita Gusev to a PTO and tried him out next to Tavares and Nylander. I think those guys would help mask his flaws (poor defensive play, poor puck carrying, weak shot) and benefit from his strengths (passing and playmaking). All he’d have to do is get the puck to Nylander in transition then get open to make plays in after Willy gains the zone. JT could bury his passes. Keefe being a more lenient coach would give him the time to settle and would overlook the occasional turnover. He’d be a perfect fit on PP2 as well. There is tremendous offensive upside there but he needs an absurdly specific role to realize it and I think that line would be one of the places he could find it.

A cheap PTO would be worth a shot in my mind.

Yeah I would've really liked having either him or Galchenyuk here for a bit more skill, I find our skill a bit shallow. Gone are the days of KK, AJ, JVR, Bozak and Kadri producing from lower in the lineup.

Second-Half:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
Ritchie - Kerfoot - Kase
Mikheyev - Kampf - Spezza/Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott

Mikheyev starts the season in Robertson's role. Once Robertson graduates you can actually create a respectable bottom six. Defensively responsible 3rd line with chemistry (Ritchie-Kase) and a purely shutdown 4th line.
