Still well above expected differential while “playing like crap for awhile”

View attachment 675426

What we are going through now is not like December or January, folks. Keep playing at this level (without nights off like tonight) and they will win more than lose. Plus, it was literally our toughest two week stretch with little rest.

I'm not really concerned about the offense. We are giving up too many odd man rushes and allowing trailers to get to high danger spots. We would be okay if we tighten that up. The defense structure isn't too bad when we are set in our zone, it's really only when we are running around chasing after the puck or coming back against the rush. Need to clean that up but it probably has a lot to do with how we play. Need to get better at reading plays.

I’m very much looking forward to the Rags game next Thursday where we will actually be rested. I expect them to skate circles around the Rags

Every breakdown in the first ended up in the back of the net. Schmid was awful and the 4th goal on Vitek stunk.
Of all the games to "not show up" for, this was the worst showing by Schmid by far.

He out-sucked the Sabres goaltender tonight so hard, I felt I was watching Mackenzie Blackwood in net.

I know Lindy said in that tweet that it wasn't the Goaltender's fault....except it was.

Even with how "not ready to play" the team was, they still scored 4 goals which on most nights gets them a victory in regulation.

Make. a. Save.

Maybe Blackwood should get a few games after we clinch so we can give our goalies some rest.

Thoughts??

I don’t think any of the goals on Schmid were bad, but he just looked like a statue on goals 2 and 3. I don’t know how you could expect him to stop the first goal, but you would liked to see him make a save on one of goals 2 or 3. He looked like he was just playing for the puck to hit him.

First goal on Vitek stunk.

I'm sure I'm going to be lambasted for daring to blame Akira, and the excuses are going to fly for "Oh well the Devils defenders were puck-watching" or what-have-you.

I don't give a sh-t.

MAKE. A. SAVE.

You are a professional Goaltender trying to solidify your position as Vitek's backup (or even, perhaps, a Starter in the future).

This outing won't do you any favors.

I wouldn't be against it.

Any hopes for the Division title took a big blow tonight.

Once we get the "x" in front of the Devils name, we throw Mackenzie out there to at least (hopefully) increase his value in the league so some other "sucker" will foolishly sign him to big money.

No…… just………no.

It’s not needed

Why does Schmid need rest?

If he can’t have a 40 game season between the NHL and AHL combined……

Especially when you consider he’s gotten relief appearances and an early hook tonight. He really hasn’t played all that much.

He only needs rest if you think he’s potentially gonna be the playoff starter.

Blackwood should be nothing but insurance at this point and only relied on in the worst case scenario.

Let him have another AHL conditioning stint.

Ok so I went out for this game, thought they'd have a cool chance to clinch against a slumping Buffalo team. Team didn't show up in the first period at all and tried playing catch up the whole game. Don't think Schmid had a chance on any of the goals and the only goal that I would ding our goalies on was the first Tuch goal. Prime example of a game where as a very good team try to coast and still try to win but Buffalo paid them for it. Hopefully the Rangers lose tomorrow so we don't back in on them winning + keep our cushion but I honestly don't care who we play. Throw this game out and show up at home against an Ottawa team with renewed confidence.

The first Tuch goal is the only one you can moderately be mad at.

Most likely we are playing the Rags anyway in 1st round....... It just seems like it will be that way. I thought that is what people wanted here.... I dont particularly want to play Rags 1st round, but i have made peace with it. Lol. Anyway maybe good energy boost.
and it matters not whether we play more games in Newark or at MSG. But even if it did, I actually wouldn’t want the pressure of playing games 1 and 2 at home if we fall behind in the series. I’d love to keep home ice for games 3 and 4 in our back pocket, should we fall behind in the series. The home team will actually face more pressure in the first couple of games.

So far in March:

Graves -7
Marino -6
Severson +6
Siegenthaler E
Hamilton E
Bahl +4
Smith +3

Not insinuating anything really, but I just tallied them up out of curiosity. Although it is odd to see how much worse the pair who is supposed to be the best defensively is. Graves and Siegenthaler have been a big time roller coaster lately. Graves especially. Marino has been fine for the most part i think. Hamilton is a trainwreck anytime he has to actually rely on his skating. Severson might the best guy overall in terms of being able to do a bit of everything, but even he does some dumb shit here and there. Bahl has been excellent lately - he was really good again tonight. Smith isn’t all that bad aside from the fact he takes stupid penalties which can’t be overlooked.

The last thing we want is to punt more games going into the playoffs because we needed to experiment with one of the league’s worst players at the position by giving him 60 minutes a night to f*** us.

Schmid doesn’t need rest, unless you think he’s potentially the playoff starter.

Roll with the two guys you got up right now.

Vitek has been a little bit better lately since his skid.

I still don’t understand the concept of resting Schmid. Vitek? Yes. Schmid? Not unless you think he’s gonna be the playoff starter.

This has mostly been my train of thought with regards to a rangers series. But that being said, if they lose home ice, it might mean they finish like ass down the stretch, which would prolly be more concerning than the actual home ice factor.

Home ice doesn't mean shit in a Rangers series for the hundredth time
Home ice or not, we don’t wanna head into the playoffs losing even more games because we stuck a sad sack of shit goalie in our nets for no reason. The worst of the 3 this season to get NHL minutes.

Some people have forgotten that Blackwood is the worst player on the entire hockey team. His absence probably helped that. Out of sight, out of mind.

And he’s not been on the ice to suck.

TG always posts shit like that , even when he was covering the Devils. He would always include a small negative tidbit as a backhanded dig on the team. Closet Rags fan .
He is a good reporter but always had small negative little jabs to throw out there where you could tell he has something afpgqinst the Devils. He did admit at one point to be a Rags fan back in his day.
Facts don't care about feelings. He's speaking facts.

I'd rather a possible game 7 at Prudential than MSG.

Meh, I'm sure there the split for that is probably close to 50-50 anyway historically in regards to teams winning a game 7.

Sure but at the same time if we end up third and we end up finishing the season at a decent clip but the Rangers finished better, are we going to be really mad about it?

"Of the 741 best-of-seven NHL playoff series played through 2022, 187 (25%) have resulted in a Game 7 with the home team holding a healthy 109-78 (58%) edge. The team that scores first has a 141-46 (75%) edge, including a 5-1 record in the 2022 postseason."

Teams that have been front running all season go into the playoffs coasting all the time and can pick up their intensity. The trouble comes when you face a club that’s been playing for its life to make the playoffs and who are used to having their backs against the wall.

As between us and the Rags, that won’t be an issue. I’d rather not catch Carolina from that standpoint and have to face a first round series against a club that’s been playing desperation hockey for the last month.

The Rags are going to be coasting into the playoffs too.

Last year Carolina ran them down and the Rags promptly embarrassed them in their playoff series - after barely surviving against a desperate Penguins club.
