Can anyone explain why the Leafs are giving away Nylander?

Look at the Dubois and Timo Meier trades for his value.

i don't think Pesce or Parayko (some retention) plus picks and / or prospects plus cap space is giving him away.

If he is asking for $10M or more I think it might be wise to move on from him now. Again, I like him and think we should trade him for value. Maybe the Carolina add is as much as Seth Jarvis.

I think Domi only works if we are moving out a sizable contract. I know we might be able to fit Domi in if/when we dump Murray, but it will be with a 20 man roster and the defence still lacking a bit.

To me, Willy is moved D man (Pesce? Parayko?) or for picks and prospects so we can sign a D man (Dumba?).

In this scenario we are moving Nylander for a Dman, Domi and cap space...probably a little more actually.

Nylander for Pesce (+ something from CAR to even it up)
Murray and Hirvonen for SJ Future Considerations (maybe we toss in a bit more)
Domi 1 * 2.5M
Toews 1 * 1M

This lineup has about $3M in remaining cap space (if we send Holmberg down)...if we want a veteran 3rd Goalie or another F or D.

Moving Nylander also allows us to keep one or both of Bertuzzi and Domi beyond this year.

I am not a "trade Nylander" guy, but Bertuzzi and Domi make him expendable and the best chip to upgrade D and add depth everywhere

Has it been confirmed Nylander will be traded? Trevling said he is optimistic in signing Austin and Willly, when did that change? FYI if Nylander was being shopped, word would get out faster than a Max Domi cheap shot.

2 3rds or a 3rd and a 4th? They honestly have a glaring hole at 3rd line that he could fill for them at a reasonable cost.

I think he'd have a decent amount of interest around the league, seems like the type that coaches like. He's obviously not physical, but he's always pretty responsible with his play. I think they easily be able to get a mid round pick or two for him

Not at all confirmed. I think adding two wingers in Bert and Domi means it is time to consider this move for D, depth and cap space.

Domi is an upgrade on Kerfoot in terms of offense and grit .. but a downgrade defensively. I still make that swap though.

Could actually see Domi playing with Tavares .. those two might blend well

Curious on your teams cap situation.

As per Capfriendly looks like you guys have 600K in cap space factoring in LTIR.

This includes 12 F 6 D 2 G

With Domi still to be added and Samsonov without his next contract.

What do you guys think the leafs will do? I am a sens fan so should I be hopeful the Leafs are going to buyout Murray or are they going to explore trade? A Murray buyout will add 4M in space this year.

it really depends on Domi's salary. we have 7 Dmen btw with Rielly Brodie McCabe Klingberg Liljegren Timmins and Gio on our cap with just under 600k so if Domi signed for Holmberg or Robertson's Salary + that 600k or less were still cap compliant without needing to make a move.

Yes but they can’t trade Matthews now. Full no movement clause. They can ONLY trade Nylander and that’s to 22 teams on his list.

They can trade Matthews if he agrees to go. Nylander cna be traded anywhere with his agreement, 21 (he can't be traded to his own team) teams if he doesn't agree.

Trading leafs best defensive D without any defensive upgrade in that area dont make will just make leafs worst.. the only way i can see it happen its kind of nylander+ brodie vs lindholm- hanifin kind of trade

It's only max value on sign and trade, otherwise you would get better value at deadline

Matthews won’t agree to a trade. Not unless the team on the other end is offering huge $.

I’ve gone back and forth on which one to keep, but both of them create some redundancy. Right now, I think you’re right - Marner should be the one gone… but he’s got a NMC now…
