Perhaps this is message to the previous GM strategy and 4 forwards making 1/2 the cap and that doesn't leave much room for depth and 2nd scoring.

ROR was clinical of both coach Keefe and some of Leafs star players in the 2nd round.

ROR a Conn Smythe winner looked at Leafs setup currently and thought leaving was better in his long-term interest. Remeber when he was a member of the Blues he saw a deep, big physical team and that is not Toronto.

Nashville or Smashville as they call it, is going to build a real deep character team with Barry Trotz.

ROR is a Conn Smythe winner who has largely been disappointing outside of one playoff run... not really a huge loss.

We really need a difference maker upfront. As far as I’m concerned, if we don’t add one of Duchene or Bertuzzi… today should be considered a failure.

Bertuzzi yes no to duchene in the top6

duchene is more of the same soft players we alrady have unless he is added as a depth to play 3rd line LW

Colorado was better off after him. Ottawa was better off before him. Columbus was better off before him. Now a guy like Trotz wants to pay him to leave despite him putting up points. I wouldn't trust a player with that kind of track record despite his performance

I still wonder if he's worth a fly even for a year. He can be a good depth player
If he doesn't pan out, then cut losses and move on

Maybe sign 1 year show me what you got deal

Most of the options that I was hoping for are still around. Brown is the only one gone so far.

Bertuzzi, Duchene, Pacioretty, Rodrigues, Gregor, Hathaway, Killorn and Wood upfront

Orlov, Dumba, Mayfield, Soucy, Graves and Dumoulin on defense.

Quite a few good depth options that will likely sign for dirt cheap after the big splash happens.

I'm sure someone will pay him for the points.

Offense isn't hurting in Toronto, and this team already has a weak locker room. I don't see much of an upside. He'd be on PP2. Marner and Nylander are already locked in on RW. He could play LW but there's better uses of money

Duchene is a year removed from a 43 goal, 80 point season as a speedy center that can bump Tavares to the wing.

I's take him in a heartbeat. We need to solve our scoring issues in the playoffs and he is one of the few free agents that can actually score goals.

I get wanting to carry a tougher presence, someone that plays physical on the forecheck, can fight, and is a veteran presence in the room, that has playoff experience. Ideally this player doesn't make much, so that we can carry a 23 man roster, have them as part of rotation. I wonder where we could find such a player
That's basically Reeves, no?

I think ideally you want someone in the top 6 that that provides that.

yeah or they fired a GM that seemed universally loved by players and hired someone with a history of losing talent. Shockingly finding it tougher to recruit now.
Not defending Treliving but why would we want a GM loved by players?

Salesmanship can only make so much impact. O’Reilly was just in this team, so he knows exactly what he’s walking away from.

ROR was very critical of both coaching and his teammates without naming names but you could see his frustration with the Leafs playoff run. Leafs lack of compete and killer instinct came out loud and clear.

Ryan O'Reilly Laments on Lack of Playoff Success With Maple Leafs, Will he Re-Sign?

"I think playing against Florida and how they came out and played so loose and just physical that as we saw we kind of dug ourselves a hole quick and just didn't kind of respond the way we needed to there," O'Reilly said.

"And then Bob (Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky) gets hot and next thing you know we're down two and not feeling great about ourselves. There are so many things we could have done differently, it's frustrating. We could have given that series a better chance and that's just the way the game goes sometimes".

"When you get into these moments when it's challenging you have to find a way to pull something out of each other and find a way to give a bit more," O'Reilly said. "I think at times against Tampa we did that; It's so many things that could have been different. We didn't respond a certain way we needed to in a couple of those games and it's disappointing. I feel I wish it could have done better and I know other guys feel that way too."
