I ain't losing sleep over 300k overpaying for a 4th liner.

Let's see if he makes any good moves

The amount of players we hope to sign and the players we need to sign. We would need more cap space. I not saying we need $30M in cap space but anywhere close to $20M would be idea. Trading Murray, Timmins, and trading Nylander for picks and prospects, then using assets acquire for a trade for Konecny would gives us a cap space around $18.8M.

He hasn't signed yet. We don't know actual dollars.

If it is 1.3, that leaves 175k that can't be buried this year, which will likely get lower in coming seasons.

That's not nearly enough for me to lose sleep over.

Fair enough but the small unnecessary overpayments to over the hill role players that cna't play more than 10 minutes isn't smart. We pinched every cent last year to ice a full roster. We would have been hurting without that 175k.

If this was 1 year, fine whatever... but 3 years is weird. I ain't losing sleep and I'm sure Reaves will be fun in interviews or whatever but... it's just not smart. There's nothing to like about it.

I mean 4 x 2.5 for a 4c and now this for an enforcer in 2023 is a fairly ugly start.

But ngl a part of me is going to love Reaves scare the piss out of the gudas’ and tkachuks of the world if they wanna f around and find out

I have far more concerns with overpaying middle of the roster guys. How many millions combined were Holl and Kerfoot overpayed? Ya we pinched pennies, but those two off the top of my head were making a lot more then they should have. That's what hurts the most.

3 years to a 36 year old who's ALREADY one of the worst players in the league is honestly fireable.

we have already completely gone off the rails. We're now back to being one of the stupid Canadian franchises like Vancouver that just make inexplicable moves.

This wouldn’t be my first target either, but saying it is fireable is just silly.

Reaves is fine as a 4th liner. He’s put up 15-20 point for most of his career while playing less than 10 minutes. He’s one of the most feared guys in the league. He’s an absolute force in the dressing room. He’s a big personality and will take cameras and microphones away from guys who don’t want them.

Depending on the terms of the deal none of the contract could be buried because of his age. They made some changes to the 35+ deals so I don’t know all the details.
Hopefully Pridham works his magic on this one but we have to wait for all the details to come out.

I don't think either were overpaid by that much, especially Holl at 2M, but yeah the hope is hopefully they can find better value out of their secondary players. I fully agree there. There are many tough physical players that can fill holes and be a lot more efficient.

Bad start with Reaves but a lot can change over the next week or so. I'll give him time and the benefit of the doubt. One thing is for sure, we won't lament that this is a soft team. I don't want to hear it.

Ryan O’Reilly And Luke Schenn Expected To Test The Market

The Maple Leafs were hoping to keep a pair of their pending unrestricted free agents in the fold but it may not play out that way. Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic reports that center Ryan O’Reilly will test the market today while Chris Johnston of NorthStar Bets and TSN adds that defenseman Luke Schenn will do the same.

O’Reilly was one of Toronto’s key trade deadline acquisitions, coming over in a trade from St. Louis. The 32-year-old fit in well with his hometown team, picking up 11 points in 13 games down the stretch while winning 62% of his faceoffs. O’Reilly then put up nine points in 11 playoff contests, cementing himself as one of the top middlemen on the open market.

LeBrun notes that the Maple Leafs had interest right to the end so it’s possible that the veteran circles back depending on how his market plays out today. That said, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Detroit, Montreal, Nashville, and Vancouver are all linked to O’Reilly as well so there could be enough interest to push his price tag out of Toronto’s price range.

As for Schenn, Johnston reports that again, there was mutual interest in getting something done but the level of interest in the 33-year-old has yielded an offer from another team that’s too strong for the Maple Leafs to match. Schenn matched his career high in points with 22 last season and chipped in with a career-high 318 hits. After playing for the last four seasons on contracts worth less than $1MM, that seems sure to change today.

Just off the players not qualified,

Jost, McLeod, White, Puljujarvi, Gurianov, Fischer, Bastian, Sprong, Kostin, Comtois, Bear, and Foote.

Players bought out,

Duchene, Wheeler and Yamamoto.

UFA’s,

Bertuzzi, Brown, Wood, Klingberg, Dumba, Soucy, and Mayfield.

There’s definitely decent options in that list.
All of the useful players there will be overpaid. ERod/Bastian seem like they don’t have a proper market.

A lot of those players aren’t that useful like Wood, Dumba, Klingberg, Wheeler and half of the unqualified players.
