Speculation: Roster Building thread - Part XVII - (TDL is March 7th)

He's got 3 (4?) concussions in the bank.

He was f***ing awesome when he got bumped up to top 4 duty for Colorado during their run post Girard injury so there is that but he's sort of been living off of that reputation. His actual on ice play since has been spotty at best and he's yet to play a full slate worth of games in any given season (hes on pace to do that this year.)

Can legitimately put the puck in the net though so there is that but the risk is probably not worth the price.
 
I'm hearing on the wire that Zibanejad was about to give his kid the bottle but faked a high leg kick and tossed it over to his wife, which promptly caused her to yell, "do you have to bring work home?"

I'd way prefer Power to Byram. Not that it's likely Buffalo would give him up. I'd drive Lafreniere to airport in a Power deal, Schneider too.

He played 73 last year, is that not close enough? Every game so far this year. He also was traded last year, so one or two of the games he missed may not have even been due to health. He’s had 3, but no head issues since ‘21. He missed time after that due to a pair of lower body injuries. He’s talked about the head injuries in his first season and a half pretty extensively.

They extended him, kicks in next year. Great AAV too. 7.14M

Meanwhile Lafren-big league chew is at 7.45 for a a single 57 point season in 5 years. Guenther is in his D+3 (when Laf had 39 points in 81 games) and has 43 in 47 games. He has 78 in his last 92 (not counting tonight).

I had the same issue a while back, very annoying.
You need to check the filter and ensure that the 'next contract signed' option in contract details is set as 'no', then it gets rid of anyone who resigned during the season.
Should be set by default IMO

Would Mario Ferraro to the Rangers be a good fit for thr deadline and to replace Ryan Lindgren down the road? 3.25 cap hit for next season and only 26 now
 
The NYR actually have gotten team friendly deals due to the NMC. At the time Zibanejad signed, 8.5M was a good deal for the team. He put up 41 G in 57 games, 50 points in 56 and then was PPG 81 in 81, was 28 years old, dynamic, and whispered about some Selke votes. He took a discount.

Shesterkin also took a discount. Argue the contract all you want but there were teams who wanted to give him $13M+ with the rising cap.

Fox took a team friendly deal too. Easily could have demanded 4-5 years but signed longer. His cap hit will be less than 10% of the cap in 25-26.

Panarin was a UFA mercenary who was paid market value but still rejected a higher offer from the islanders.

Miller was acquired with the NMC, but at $8M, is on a bargain contract for what he brings.

Trocheck and Kreider on a lesssr tier got partial NMC. They turn into limited NTC which is the par for the course for top 6 UFA deals. Trocheck is underpaid by about 2-3M per year and Kreider too. Remember Anders Lee got 7x7 and Kreider signed for 6.5

All 9 games he missed last year were as part of the Avalanche (he got traded after they played their 64th game, he played 55.)

He's missed a ton of time in his young career. The head stuff is the most worrisome (especially with how tough his experience was with it) and I'll always say it, if you're getting hurt this much in your early 20's, it isn't likely to get any better as you get older. He had a LBI (high ankle sprain?) that kept him out for nearly half a season too. Thats a shit load of dev time missed and it's clearly had an impact.

I like the goal scoring but there are plenty of moments in his game that look like this:

This isn't a one off with him either, he does shit like this all the time and its a big reason why Colorado let him go to begin with (the misplay by Power isn't lost on me here, but that doesn't excuse what ever the f*** that was from Byram.)

If I'm making a trade for a top 4 D, I want a guy who is driving the results on his pair, not someone who can just exist with an elite player and be okay. Why settle?

You really need a coaching staff that is dialed into what they're doing with defensemen. This is not that place.

Because (if it were to happen) the price is relatively low and 23 is relatively young and the upside is relatively high. I feel like there’s little doubt he would do better beside Fox than Lindgren or Miller, and if he wasn’t the solution next to Fox, would at least form a fair second pairing with Borgen. The appeal of Byram is him being a buy low candidate with upside. Buffalo has two top 4 LHD locked up long term plus Samuelsson also locked up long term and Byram doesn’t seem to want to commit long term because 1) it’s Buffalo and he’s already won a Cup 2) he tracks to be behind Dahlin and Power no matter what he does. Two 1OA LHD on the roster isn’t a great situation for a 23yo LHD with clear top 4 upside.

Now, does our coaching suck? Yes. But is the upside clear and the potential to capitalize on a buy low moment there? I think so. If Byram’s not had concussion issues in 2.5+ years and managed 73 last year and plays 82 this year, I am willing to take that gamble. Even if it’s at the draft.
