I'm going to have to peek at HockeyViz's game shift charts tomorrow when my subscription level gets access to it because I honestly thought Dillon struggled tonight, but perhaps my memory is plagued by the 2nd period when everyone was. My working theory on why I thought this way (
based on Garret's manual tracking) was because of the forwards - especially 91-80-26 - doing most of the work in transition with
every pairing (especially zone exits), and especially so with the 5-4 pairing. Perhaps 5-4 did a better job than I thought of keeping things to the perimeter and tied up along the boards, allowing 80 to pick up the puck and carry it out of the DZ.
Still, it hurt that 2nd line in being able to generate much offensively, as they had to carry the puck a full 200ft (even though Perfetti was magical with the puck tonight), whereas 5-4 dumped the puck every time with the 3rd and 4th lines and let them forecheck a tired Rangers squad to death in the 3rd. I think swapping 81 and 91 already would do wonders, since Ehlers works best when the puck gets to his stick in space that Perfetti has shown exceptional talent in doing, while 81 needs a ton of help to get into the OZ before he can work his skills in smaller spaces.
Other than that, I thought DeMelo had an uncharacteristically bad game. Stanley had a few good passes that led to exits, but he was struggling to keep up with the play even off faceoffs, deferring constantly to collapse to net front and then looked for the nearest guy to put his stick across his back. His spin-o-rama on the goal against was just the cherry on top. 3rd and 4th line with more trust in an aggressive forecheck paid dividends tonight - but it was against a NYR team on a B2B and 3rd game in 4 nights. We'll see if they can keep up that up.
