Three Stars:

1. Scheifele: scored two goals, made some incredible passes, picked some Ranger pockets, broke up at least one odd man rush that I remember... great game.

2. Hellebuyck: Played three great periods, but saved our hides in the second.

3. Ehlers: I thought he started slow despite a nice assist on the first goal, but he really looked motivated out there. Nice game.

By the way, Stanley had a great game (boy are we lucky we started him instead of Samberg). Smart plays, physicality, and a nice play on Gagner's goal. In fact, I can't really dump on any individual player in this game. Our second line still has to get it's timing, but they had several great chances (and that's what you want, great chances... you'll capitalize eventually). Appleton looked like our slowest forward, though. He better be careful, we have some guys waiting for his spot.
I saw it a little different than you.
I thought Ehlers worked hard but was fighting the puck.
I thought that the Stanley/ Schmidt pair was a disaster. Struggling to game possession and clear the zone most times they were on, including on the one goal against.

Well it's good to win the home opener. I thought we played two strong periods and one very forgettable one.

The good: Our shape was much better in the nz and defensive end. We tended to do a good job playing the box plus 1 whenever the Rangers established zone time. We kept them largely outside and limited second chance opportunities. I'm very happy we went back to an aggressive forecheck, it lead to rushes passes and turnovers. I thought offensively We were still a bit out of sorts but that will come with the talent on this team.

Second period we got two cute and created issues with poor turnovers while exiting our zone, through the nz, and at the opposition blue line. This caused almost all of our issues that period.

Players:

Helle: He was fantastic, nothing else to say.

JoMo/DeMelo: Played well tonight but I think JoMo has another gear offensively then he showed tonight.

Dillion/Pionk: Much better by this pairing. I thought Dillion looked much better in the new zone based system. Pionk was physical and much better retrieving and moving the puck out. Jumped in well a couple of times.

Schmidt/Stanley: I didn't care for them yet again. Neither are good enough defensively and we get stuck running around in our end more often then not with them out. Schmidt was just not being smart with his shots and puck movement tonight. Stanley was having trouble reading the play and was caught flat footed a few times. Need much better from our third pairing.

Ehlers/Scheifele/Conner: Dominate first and third periods by this trio but where the worst line in the second as they tried to get way too fancy and force too many things that weren't there. When they are on they are dynamic and hard to stop.

Perfetti/Dubois/Wheeler: I thought Cole played well. He was doing the little things really well, great controlled exits and entries. Sound positioning forced bad plays in the nz and Oz. He also found the soft ice well but needs to hit the net with his shots next time (he wasn't the only one in the top 6 that had that issue). Set Wheeler up for what should have been a goal. Lots to build off of but he was a bit hesitant at times. Dubois assist aside was not very good. Poor puck management and was overpassing all night or making poor reads. He also needs to up his physical game. Wheeler had an excellent night poor finish not withstanding. He was a bull on the walls and looked much fresher and sharp when he had the puck. Controlled minutes does wonders. I also loved his demeanor in the post game. He like Mark seems in a much better place mentally and seems to be really embracing his mentorship role with Cole.

Third line: They played well in the role they are expected to do. Lowry was good defensively and on the PK. Appelton was good as well both ways I thought Barron was just ok.

Fourth line: That is why we got Gagner. Solid night and his skill and experience came through on that goal. Gus with his best game as a Jet, good faceoffs, PK and positioning. The Finn was strong as well tonight.
Nice summary. I`m just a little surprised that you thought Barron was just ok - I thought he contributed a lot to that line and shows real promise.

The real takeaway from this 1st game is how well Dillon and Pionk played together. This is the pairing that seems, on paper at least, to best complement one another. If they can build on this, we will have firmed up the 2nd defensive pairing very nicely. Now the coach`s can focus on the 3rd pairing and assess who plays most effectively with Schmidt. (And I seem to recall that Heinola/Schmidt showed pretty well even with the circus we had last season:nod: so I haven`t given up hope on that possibility either).

That was the best game I've attended in a long time, even before covid shutdowns. Crowd was actually into it. Last season I may as well have been at a funeral some games. Hellebuyck was great. Entire team had a good effort.

How wil jets make the fans enjoy the experience? So quiet. Only noise was booing trouba which kind of sends negative vibes.
It wasn't quiet at the game

Any new things at games to increase the experience?

Tv sounded like a funeral at times.

Ehlers was fighting the puck, I agree. But I thought he fought through it by sheer determination…. and he did get two assists. As far as Stanley goes, I judged him more on the individual okays - hits, outlet passes, poke checks, blocked shots, penalty killing. And he did start the okay that led to the winning goal.

It was game one against one of the best teams in the league and we had a big win and only one bad period. Lots of optimism after this.

To be fair to Barron my focus wasn't as strongly on him as the other two so I may have missed some of the good things he did.

Agreed on the second pairing. If they have found their stride it gives us two good pairings.

There’s a lot to be concerned about but hopefully the more the team plays under these new systems, the better they get.

Hellebuyck sparkled. Scheifele was fantastic. That’s what we neat.

A typical low-IQ gaffe by Trouba, can’t process the game fast enough and panics. We had that issue with him when he was here, thanks for the assist on the win, buddy! Enjoy that shit contract, Rags

Overall decent game... too many chances for both teams and way too high event... this was definitely not Rick Bowness hockey.

Top line is a menace whenever they are on the ice.

2nd line, not sure who is going to shoot the puck on this line.

3rd line - wasn't impressed by Barron during the preseason but he definitely earned that spot today. Appleton was meh

4th line - scored a goal... not much more you can ask for. Gagner is going to be a great signing me thinks

Stan had a good first period but then wasn't too hot esp on the goal. Time for Samberg to get a crack.

Helle looked like his old self, dialed in.

I wonder which forward they are gonna take out to play "The flow that skates"? The only bottom-6 player whose game I didn't like was Appleton but his spot is likely safe due to his reputation and handedness.
Good post, and the Jets may have to shuffle the lines a bit. As you say in your post, the 2nd line doesn't have any shooters ? You have all your snipers on the 1st line, being Connor, Scheifele, and Ehlers. We're losing goals, by not having a sniper paired up with Perfetti on the 2nd line. Cole is a very smooth and slick playmaker, and needs a guy that can finish. It's a matter of sending either Ehlers or Connor to the 2nd line, then we'd have a great 2 line scoring punch. This would mean sending either Wheeler or Dubois up to the first line. Because I believe the Coaches don't want Sheifele and Wheeler together, then send Dubois up to the 1st line, Ehlers to the 2nd line, and let Perfetti center the 2nd line. Only problem with this is the Jets want "big guys" on that 2nd line to protect Perfetti, so I'm not quite sure what the answer is here, but Cole needs a scorer he can feed.

how about we keep the lines the same and give them more then 1 game, 1st line looks like it could be one of the best in the league and the 2nd line also had some chances and needs more time to get chemistry

That was a really enjoyable game to watch. Nice to see our best guys on the best line. Hope a lot more games this season can look that that. If they are it will at least be an enjoyable season and at most...who knows.

Definitely had one of our slumps again combined with New York being a good team. Always nice when Helle can steal a game for us tho; that's why we love him. That and his puck handling abilities. :sarcasm:

I am fairly down on the jets this year I don't really think they will accomplish much, but Bowness is really refreshing. Getting Wheeler stripped of the captaincy was great and he had some line combinations tonight the idiot Maurice never would have put together. Encouraging start.

I think Dubois should stay as a centre for now
That leaves Perfetti (too new) or Wheeler (not that again) on the 1st
I also don't want to demote Ehlers after he finally hits Line 1 and KC doesn't deserve to go down either

Let's stick with these lines for now and possibly later switch to something like PSE and CDW

I'm sure Bowness will keep the lines the same for awhile, and see how it goes. I just don't think Wheeler or Dubois have the soft scoring hands to compliment Cole, but hopefully they'll get better. Dubois has better than average scoring hands, and hopefully he'll get hot this year. There is no doubt our 1st line is stacked with talent, so I guess time will tell if they keep the 1st line intact ?

Yes I hear you, and likely they'll leave things as is for awhile, unless they hit a big drought in the scoring department. I do agree sending Ehlers to the 2nd line would sort of be like demoting him, but maybe lines should not be classified as number 1 and 2, as Bowness likes more equal time for all lines. We'll see what the future brings.

I'm going to have to peek at HockeyViz's game shift charts tomorrow when my subscription level gets access to it because I honestly thought Dillon struggled tonight, but perhaps my memory is plagued by the 2nd period when everyone was. My working theory on why I thought this way (based on Garret's manual tracking) was because of the forwards - especially 91-80-26 - doing most of the work in transition with every pairing (especially zone exits), and especially so with the 5-4 pairing. Perhaps 5-4 did a better job than I thought of keeping things to the perimeter and tied up along the boards, allowing 80 to pick up the puck and carry it out of the DZ.

Still, it hurt that 2nd line in being able to generate much offensively, as they had to carry the puck a full 200ft (even though Perfetti was magical with the puck tonight), whereas 5-4 dumped the puck every time with the 3rd and 4th lines and let them forecheck a tired Rangers squad to death in the 3rd. I think swapping 81 and 91 already would do wonders, since Ehlers works best when the puck gets to his stick in space that Perfetti has shown exceptional talent in doing, while 81 needs a ton of help to get into the OZ before he can work his skills in smaller spaces.

Other than that, I thought DeMelo had an uncharacteristically bad game. Stanley had a few good passes that led to exits, but he was struggling to keep up with the play even off faceoffs, deferring constantly to collapse to net front and then looked for the nearest guy to put his stick across his back. His spin-o-rama on the goal against was just the cherry on top. 3rd and 4th line with more trust in an aggressive forecheck paid dividends tonight - but it was against a NYR team on a B2B and 3rd game in 4 nights. We'll see if they can keep up that up.

"Refreshing" is the key word after Maurice's system got so repetitive year after year.
