Sure the Rangers were playing a back to back game and didn't have Igor playing but they are a very good team and we were playing our 1st game under a entirely new coaching staff. I have absolutely no complaints about how we played last night and we picked up the win , good stuff.
It's also interesting to wonder about if Bowness would have been able to settle the team down in the second.

It was pretty obvious the team stopped being aggressive and fell into old habits. I know coaches loathe to use their timeout before the end of the game, but a timeout at the midway mark with some reinforcement of play style may have been helpful

Awesome game to watch, echoing all the thoughts in here. Really hoping for beast mode Scheif to make his triumphant return.

That said, top line gave up way too much for my liking, and still feels like a waste of so much talent, especially shooting talent. Then looking at our 2nd line and how if Dubois is off (as he was this game) it has so much trouble getting anything going. I just think they need to spread the wealth around. Perfetti with Scheif and Ehlers and C-D-W, or put ESW back together, something. Wonder how many times we're going to see Perfetti dish to Wheeler for flubbed scoring chances this year, heh (I thought Wheels had a really solid game though and awesome to see him coming out and playing hard without the C pressures. Think we'll see a great season from him).

More random thoughts...

Demelo with an uncharacteristically bad game.

Dillon looked great. Wow, having him become his old self would be a major boon. I think he was one of the players who suffered most from our systemic chaos last year. And I can't remember why but I didn't love Pionk's game... still would like to see Dillon with Schmidt and something like Samberg - Pionk on third pair.

Stanley I thought looked okay at times, but there's too much 'freak out' in his game still. Even on the Gagne goal he got the puck, had time and space and made this crazy spinorama pass to no one that was pretty unnecessary. Doesn't seem to control the play a lot. Don't mind seeing what Samberg can do.
Edit: I can't really understand what they're thinking with Stanley - Schmidt as a pairing. Schmidt has a lot to give offensively, but he needs someone to lock it down behind him to open that up. Do they really see Stanley as that guy? To me he's the opposite of that, and maybe the worst possible partner for Schmidt.

Helle holy shit. Nice game from him.

Agreed... somehow he is credited with 3 "hits" for that game, I don't recall a single one. Hometown tracking at work it seems. A man of his size should be dictating the play a bit more. He can't have a guy 10 year older than him and a rookie show him up out there. According to MoneyPuck he was the worst Jet when it comes to xGoal%.
Dubois seems to get a lot of goals by individual effort. Perhaps he could play on 3rd or 4th and get full pp time. Use dubois Similar to Perrault

I'm trying not to remember thay second period lol. You could be right as I might be overinflating their influence because they looked visually better tonight then last year.

Yeah the top 6 lacks balance on each line imo. Cole needs a finisher on his line until he gets fully comfortable and starts to better use his shot. Also speed to ope things up for him would also help. Really him and Blake like to do the same things on the ice and those skills are better off spread out as is our shooting talent.

I agree with Garett that the third pairing killed the second line tonight. Absolute awful breakout passing by them. The Stanley experiment needs to end.

This is exactly how I feel. I see this second line functioning only when Dubois has a big game, but when he fades they fade.

I think Perfetti would really benefit not only from a shooter but a play-pusher and space maker like Ehlers. Like WPGChief said he's also so good at quick thinking and quick distributing that it just seems like a fit.

Wheeler isn't a play-pusher anymore and is kind of playing a more cerebral game like Perfetti is. I just don't see it working all that well, but willing to give it some games and see how it goes.

Solid start to the season, lots to like here.

Helly was a rock. Made some difficult saves look easy, also thought his puck play looked better, like he worked on it.

Barron fit nicely on that third line, which I thought had a solid game. He has a nice mix of speed and size and used both to drive that line. Like Apps game as well, used his size for once and threw some good hits.

Wow, cut Wheeler’s minutes to around 15 and he has a great game. One of our best forwards last night. His line was not great, but he played solid.

Dillion Pionk were our top pairing last night, producing 6 shots, 5 hits and 5 blocks. Josh played well, Demelo did not. Stanley did ok last night, but still needs to play more physical if he wants to hold that spot down.

4rth lines can actually contribute. Gus was excellent down the middle and the line was able to play in the O zone effectively throughout the game. Gagne netting the winner off an excellent forecheck by Gus will only earn them more opportunities going forward.

Total ice distribution was spot on by Arniel. We played quick, we challenged aggressively in the neutral zone and forced dump ins. When we got away from it in the second we gave up odd man rushes and extended Ozone time.Keeping the minutes dispersed like this will help us maintain that pace throughout the season.

Demelo was bad last

Scheif looks poised for a big season. That first line has so much room to grow and learn off each other as each of them have very dynamic games. They look good last night while still being off on a few passes and reads.

We start the season 4 days late, now we have 2 days off till our next game. NHL scheduling is a headscratcher

DeMelo took a big hit behind our net, i wonder if that had something to do with his play?

Nice recap -
Agree with pretty much all your points -
The only thing I would add was the second period issues that I thought were mostly due to blue line turnovers - there were a bunch of them and they lead to way to much time defending and very little Ozone time - especially for the top two lines. I thought our bottom six outplayed our top six in the second.

He played a decent game tonight - and being game one under new systems and all, I'll take the win against a very good team and give the guys some credit - all of them.
Usually the downers don't pull out the charts unless we lose - for some it just about finding something to whine about -
BTW, The scorer on the lone Ranger goal was fading away on that goal and left himself with a tough angle but made it work. The passer on the goal spun off his check (I think it was Ehlers) and had nothing between him and the net other than Stan - so Stan was actually playing this the way he should have - he stayed between the passer and the shooter and tried to take away the pass - and that pass barely made it's way through.
I'm pretty sure if this was any other dman, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Only Heinola. Then we'd be arguing about whether his "gaffe" (it's always a gaffe with Heinola) outweighed his other useful contributions. They're the yin and yang of our emerging D-men. Samberg occupies the enviable neutral posish.

I was watching this in the wee hours so can't say I was making much sense of things, but I thought this was a really promising start, especially for the new systems. When the team sagged in the second -- traditionally the Jets' bête noire -- I feel like their basic structure plus Helle the Wall was enough to keep them above water. That's new -- we know what often happens last season in this situation.

Chapeaus to 55, who played with a lot of speed and committment in more than one zone and to Barron whose routes were pretty close to perfect from what I saw of him. Thought the 4th were strong and some nice chemistry between Samwise and the Bus -- Sammy might not have been able to carry the Ring, but he carried the team with the game winner. Nice work on the PP from Doobs, and JMo, Dillon and Pionk looked good to me on the back end. Perfetti needs a smarter scorer and I'd be fine with Wheeler and Barron swapping places, at least to see.

Great start to the season, and exactly the one the team and fans needed. Onwards, and a speedy return to health for the Bone man!

I think the most important thing is the Jets are actually watchable now. Last few years have been really, really hard to enjoy.
This, x 100. Lord how I came to dread their games, and that is the worst of all possible worlds for a fan.

Well that was a great way to start the season, alll four lines with solid play and Vezina Helle back on form. The second period gave me last year vibes but the third erased that. 3 games in 4 nights played a part but the Jets get full marks for a fantastic effort.

i still think (and believe share similar thoughts w/ others) that the 2nd line might benefit from a switch with more of a shooter. it'd probably have to be a switch w/ one of KC or Ehlers with Perfetti as i don't think anyone wants to see Scheifele-Wheeler lol. But it's 1 game lets see how they progress. that top-line performed nicely. Ehlers with Scheifele has always been a v good pairing.

much is always made about how this team rolls 4 lines.... there was minimal Special Teams time this game, just was curious on % of total 5v5 TOI each player got

f*** trouba still loving trouba
Stan looked good he was largely horrible
Wheeler strong game barely noticed him, except when he wouldn't shoot given the opportunity
Dubois and Perfetti struggled at points but I have hope for that line thought these two carried that line
I think Gagner can score 20 might need 10 on PP2 to get there
Big Sak playing a physical game yep
Gus instrumental in the win yep
Morgan Barron is a beauty yep
Esc is going to give teams nightmares yep
Helly back to Vezina form yep

Let's forget about the 2nd period yep
