That isn't really how it works. If Babcock comes back then his new team and the Leafs would have to determine how much each pay him. His old contract doesn't go away it gets absorbed in a way by his new team.

Yeah I thought his contract expired at the end of 2020. Evidently not. Not affordable for the Jets in that case as the Leafs will want the Jets to pay atleast half his salary.

Would be a good fit for this group to be honest (if he has learned his lesson).

That is a big if, every media or interview that he has done has given me the indication that he hasn't. But who knows, but like you said its a moot point as he's way too expensive.

Why is Babcock too expensive. If Jets are paying Maurice $3 million, they could make a deal with Toronto where they pay the same 3 million and Toronto pays the balance. Also I wouldn't be surprised if Babcock would take less just to get back into the NHL and he could do a lot worse than the Jets as a team to coach.

Prediction:

Jets miss the playoffs - Maurice fired at the end of the season

First round exit- short leash next season

2nd round exit or farther- Maurice stays medium to long term

I suspect that Winnipeg would be a very desirable landing spot for coaches right now. The talent is certainly there. And a world class goalie (coach maker).

I personally like Babcock as a short term solution, but he's a bit of a loose cannon and not a "Chipman guy" in my opinion. I suspect he will be back in the NHL soon, but certainly not here.

Babcock is a Saskatchewan Manitoba boy tho no?

He does make sense but he'd have to I dunno if he's a guy that they could hire because of his past issues. Unless ofcourse yeah.. legit apology

If Trotz gets canned on the Island would he be an upgrade to Maurice or same story another coach which time has past?
Is the sky blue? ;) Trotz gets it. Im not gonna write a book here, but he is far beyond Maurice's abilities both in terms of managing a team and understanding the technicals of the game.

That being said, he isn't getting fired, and he'd be expensive.

Claude Julien is the top candidate in my opinion, although I suspect the Devils, Stars, and perhaps the Flyers are all looking at him. He's probably going to command serious money. Lane Lambert would be an excellent hire and might be a more realistic hire.

Jim Montgomery might be the best coach on the market, but TNSE isn't touching any of the guys with baggage. Babcock and Torts would probably also fall in that category.

If Cassidy in Boston gets axed he'd be high on my list.

I'd give Torts a couple of years -
Wpg Jets boot camp - see who comes out of that still standing :DD
There's a couple of key players that would hate it - but there would be no confusion on expectations

An overly simple post and I'm leaving out the potential blow back effects of bring this wrecking ball into your room -
But it would be fun to watch (for awhile)

Maybe it's time to go off the board and look at someone who has never coached in the NHL, but has had success at other levels and leagues.

That has always been my preferred route but I'm not sure who is out there that is good.

Torts is totally against working in Canada, so you can forget ever seeing him here.

One name I have seen is:

Rikard Gronborg.

52-year-old Gronborg is best known as being the longtime head coach of the Swedish national team. A few years ago, Gronborg's agent, Neil Glasberg, brought the coach to North America to introduce him to NHL teams. Gronborg got great feedback, but ultimately NHL teams just haven't been willing to step out of their comfort zone and hire non-North American born coaches, despite the fact that European players now comprise 30% of NHL rosters.
Though he is Swedish, Gronborg played college hockey at St. Cloud State in Minnesota, and he is married to an American.
"Gronberg has coached almost every big-time Swedish player in the league right now and he has some big-time supporters," Glasberg told ESPN last year. "Nicklas Lidstrom in Detroit, Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson. The Sedins. They're all Gronborg supporters."

Yeah he's a name that has been thrown around a lot. I wouldn't be opposed to a European coach. I'm sure there are plenty over there that would make great NHL coaches. Seems like an untapped talent pool due to the old boys clubs in NA.

I know Chipman wants suck ups working for him so he has influence with what takes place on the ice but it's past time he checks his inflated ego for the sake of the players and fans. Babcock has won at every level and needs to be brought in ASAP. This team also desperately requires a president of hockey ops simulator to what the Nucks just did. The #ChipperPlan has failed. Time for this managing owner to step back.

The only issues with Babcock that I've heard of is him being an asshole to players... does he have any other skeletons in his closet? When Babcock was being exposed I don't recall any racism, abuse/coverup of abuse allegations. As long as that's the case and he doesn't have any worse skeletons in his close like racism or abuse I'll be OK with him as long as he expresses contrition and has learned his lesson. For me he's not on the same tier of cancelled as Peters or Quinnville.

Yes, there's that to deal with -

Not even sure what that was all about TBH - floating, benching, etc etc.

I do like his "call it like it is" approach - wouldn't that be refreshing?

@cbcwpg states he is not interested in Canada so the point is mute regardless of what I'd like to see.

Just having some fun visualizing the reaction of a few "straight leg" players after Tortz tears through them

Hiring Torts is like buying a whole bunch of fireworks and setting them off inside your house... it may be fun and entertaining for a bit but good odds that when all is said and done you end up with a house on fire and no insurance payout.

Now is not the time to experiment. So many of the new coaches flame out in their first NHL job. The odds of you ending up with a coach who's not ready are as high as ending up with a Sullivan/Cooper type. The Jets need a proven NHL coach. We can experiment with a new coach and go off the board once Helle/Scheifele/Ehlers are no longer on the team and we are rebuilding.

Additionally I think this group might just walk over a new guy. They need a proven guy with gravitas.
