Some people who follow college hockey were saying that they actually wanted Pionk the most out of the three and how he was being underrated. Only very few though but these guys were pretty knowledgeable which is why I really liked the Pionk signing

I remember a number of Wild fans loving this move in particular

I don't understand how anyone can be even remotely upset with players like Pionk or Vesey. Here are players, that are likely to be career NHLers, that we got for free. NYR organization have done a great job getting free depth talent from the college system and I hope it continues.

Eh, Vesey irritates me because it feels like the coaches have misused him and he has struggled to find out what kind of player he is. That said, AV did probably nail it when he said Vesey needs to be that "power forward" around the net. Vesey can't be someone the offense goes through, he can't carry the puck around trying to set things up. He has good hands but he needs to use them to retrieve pucks, make solid plays to his teammates (not risky ones he thinks he can make) and then go around the net area for rebounds, deflections, chances in tight. He's far more successful that way rather than trying to be Rick Nash out there.

In recent years, Rick Nash has been more successful that way too.

Yup, though Nash was/is very effective carrying the puck which Vesey generally is not

Anyways, w/ Pionk hopefully he shores up his shot stats...tough to make the call on what's going on there as the whole team kinda sucks at that, maybe he's just being played over his head and needs to improve his game if he ever wants to play those minutes, but hopefully it'll improve either way

Neal Gleeonk: "He's Ryan Ellis!"

Neal Freeonk: "Hey, we got a young player who's performing well so far, without giving up any assets other than a contract slot."

Neal Stionk: "Derp derp."

For certain posters here, why is there no middle ground?

To be fair, the comparison to Ryan Ellis was one of style. Not on overall talent. If anyone has made any outlandish direct comparisons, they've been few and far between.

Seems like most believe Pionk to be somewhere between a third pair and a #3 defender. 95% of the people here are pretty reasonable and realistic. It's only a small handful that act like jackasses.

Emotional hyperbole. Prevalent everywhere on the internet but very much more apparent when it comes to topics where people have an "investment" like sports, politics, etc.

Some outgrow it (I mostly have!) and some never do. These same people will display it in person but be much more reasonable and agreeable to talk to, usually. So it's just easier to not "bite" and attempt to continue logical, friendly discourse. Kill them with kindness. It does work! =)

edit: All bets off if I'm inebriated. We're either best friends or I hate you.

Everything here is absolutely valid. I think the difference for me is that I'm biased, I view his deficiencies through the lens that we got him for free so I'm a lot more lenient with my expectations for him.

Yeah he’s looked fantastic tonight. From TC to tonight he is so improved. Solid and confident.

Something about watching him QB the PP made me laugh. He was decisive, not afraid to shoot, slick along the blue line, passes on point. It made me laugh because we’ve had so many highly touted guys we brought in to solve it and here is this undrafted college FA and he looks second best at it to only Yandle.

That wasn't an isolated incident. He's awful defensively.

He's fantastic with the puck, but there's work to be done.

I'm fine with that.

If ADA pulled some of the same shit Pionk pulls, there would be 25 pages about what a bust he is. I'm not fine with that.

Your avatar made my night after seeing impact refereeing destroy a wonderful Ranger game.

You need to stop stat watching.

You need to stop stat watching.

You need to start game watching. Pionk is incapable of leaving his zone. If he improves his zone exits, he'll be a great player, but right now he's one of the worst players I've seen at this level at zone exits.

This is so wrong I don't know where to begin.

Got anything to back up this claim? Video or anything

I don't have a supercut of Pionk hitting opponents with outlet passes handy but it's pretty apparent if you watch him in his own zone instead of just paying attention to him doing pretty things with the puck.

There’s a lot of truth to this.

Exiting his zone feels like an episode of “Seconds from Disaster.”

Yeah this is the sad truth. He’s been very very good in the offensive zone and pretty good in the d zone except when trying to pass out of it. He needs to get better at zone exits in the worst way.

I think he’s capable of being good at them, I just hope coaches are pointing this out to him.
