Eligible A80 is airborne near the sideline when he receives a legal forward pass. As he comes to the ground facing the field of play, his toe (a) clearly drags the ground inbounds before he falls out of bounds; (b) touches the ground inbounds and then his heel comes down on the sideline in a continuous motion. He maintains firm control of the ball in both cases.

RULING: (a) Complete pass. (b) Incomplete pass. The continuous toe-heel touching is part of a single process and by interpretation he has landed out of bounds, thus not executing a catch.

Going up 6 isn’t as big of a difference as people think it is. Losing to a TD + XP is a completely different world from going to OT.

Plus because coaches are conservative and often play the wrong way down 3, it tells the other team to play more optimally by going for the TD instead of playing for the FG.

Read the second part I edited in. Not Kicking is 100% correct and it’s not a particularly close call.

You’re trying to maximize Win%, not go as long as possible without losing. Oregon is still the better team. They’re >50% to win in OT and gain a ton of equity by Wisconsin being overwhelmingly likely to play for 3.

He got a chance to win the game outright plus poor field position for Wisconsin if he fails plus he eliminated almost all outcomes where he loses in Regulation. It’s not just the likelihood of Wisconsin scoring a TD. It’s the rainbow of outcomes. This one really isn’t close.

How do you feel about him running a fake rather than just going for it in a typical manner?

I love that he did the right thing there and went for it. Just not positive I like the fake FG as a means to get there.

I would completely understand that complaint, but I would also leave open the possibility that they thought they saw something in Wisconsin’s FG play they could exploit. It’s impossible for us to know that.

That's not what happened though. They left it up to the field goal holder to make call on the fly.

If he was making the call, he leaves his Heisman finalist QB on the field.
