Ohio had blocked betting on Alabama baseball games. 3 other states followed suit and now the head coach has been fired.

Definitely seems like there's a fire here and not just some smoke.

Word is the head coach tipped a friend that they were swapping pitchers and that person went to MGM Sportsbook at Great American Ball Park in Cincy and place a 50k win bet on LSU when most other bets were under 100. Gee that didn't look fishy.

But wasn't LSU up like 8 runs, then Bama came back?

I'm torn on the 1st down clock change.

I actually like the suspense in a close game of an end drive where every first down is a potential game saver. The slower pace between plays that the stoppage allows builds more drama. It is watchable for me.

On the other hand, it might force coaches to stop micromanaging QBs so severely and let them have the authority to audible as needed in those situations, or pick from a pool of plays as fast as possible to save time. Which in turn builds that skillset for offensive players heading into the NFL and that could be good for the sport overall

I think I value the latter more, but I think the former makes a nice and lazy viewing experience.

I’d be surprised if they even get bowl eligible (like a legit 6-6 not a 5-7 gets in because they need to fill spots).

Michigan State was a team last year that Vegas stuck to their guns & let the public hammer over on the season win total.

He had “committed” to OSU at one point and was lurking at USC. Trusting teenagers to their word is skating on thin ice.
Meh, decommitments are pretty common a year+ from signing day. It's better for schools to have it happen early in the cycle versus signing day. Schools drop/pull offers all the time. It's just not publicized, so I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone when a kid backs out.

Imagine a year where Penn State doesn't play Ohio State....how Penn State vs Ohio State or Penn State vs Michigan wasn't a protected game is bonkers

@JojoTheWhale is Pat Fitzgerald about to join David Shaw in the unemployment line?

This one is so interesting because beyond the Ferentz Dynasty, I thought Fitzgerald was the most ingrained coach in FBS.

The summary that the investigation firm put out makes absolutely no sense. They couldn't find any wrongdoing, but also found the claims credible and supported by evidence.

Never trust a football coach with military hair. That man was set up for life with zero expectations.

I do wonder if the results were there recently if they would have put up more of a fight to keep him?

They were/are projected be pretty terrible again this year & that would be three years of that in the considerably weaker division in the conference. He was another bad year away from things getting interesting there from an on field perspective. If you stack another bad season that’s 4 out of the last 5 with your lone good season being a top 10 finish but albeit in the Covid year.

Like I get it’s Northwestern. I’m not saying they have to be Ohio State but why not look at Iowa or Wisconsin? They’re not dynamic recruiting places nor dynamic offenses but they’ve relatively kept a range of outcomes from year to year like 6-10 win range.

—————————

It’s just interesting, right or wrong Fitzgerald & Shaw could have had their picks or any college or NFL openings over the years. Now both are out of a job & probably would have to take one worse than their previous stop if/when they get back in the saddle.

I'm not sure anyone touches Fitzgerald for a while (if at all). The guy was basically a position coach, not even a coordinator, before his alma mater got desperate enough to throw him a head coaching gig where he was basically just the CEO type and not overly involved with the X's and O's. That doesn't scream "he'll land on his feet as a coordinator somewhere."

We've seen other coaches escape scandal and rejuvenate their careers (Sark, Lane, Freeze), but they were certainly more talented coaches and their issues didn't involve abuse of players. Durkin would be the closest example, and while he was certainly negligent, he didn't go out of his way to promote a culture that would harm his players. The school only really fired him because he was a prick on wheels and the players refused to come back to the program if was left in place.
