You'll hear people mock Clarkson's game, but contract aside I like him. He's not as effective as he once was, but I've seen many nights where he was effective enough. He forechecks hard, goes to the net, bangs in some goals, and can be part of a good cycle. He will stand up for his teammates like an old time hockey player, and from everything I hear about him he's a really good guy.

Obviously this is a really useful deal for the Leafs, but I think it's creative and smart thinking by Columbus too.

Another thing i'd like everyone to get a primer on is how often teams elect to get insurance for a player -- Genuinely curious if this is something that Management messed up on, or if it's just a culmination of a series of unfortunate circumstances that could happen to any other team.

I get the impression that each NHL team does not carry 22 individual insurance policies against their active roster.

Well, at least no one is prematurely making up their mind before the guy plays a shift.

I'm happy, NOBODY on here EVER thought we would get so much as a bag of used pucks for Horton and nobody knew we didn't have insurance so whatever Clarkson produces is more than Horton would have for the same cost. He is a gritty guy that will go to the net, fight and obviously has talent since he scored 30 goals before. He didn't fit in with Toronto, now he gets a fresh start with a team more suited to his skill set. I think it's fantastic, my kinda player!

An over paid, low production, high penalty minute guy. Amirite?

so someone answer these 2 questions

1) what is Clarkson's contract, years left...salary

2) How does Toronto free up cap space with Horton's contract but we couldn't? Is that what I understand?

Clarkson and Horton are literally the exact same thing at this point, except Clarkson can play and Horton can't. For that reason alone this trade makes sense for CBJ. For cap reasons, and cause either way you're lighting 30 million on fire, this trade makes sense for TOR.

1. Too long, too much.

2. We did save cap, but since he was uninsured we would have to play him his full salary without assistance from insurance. So now toronto has no problem paying him to never play.

This pretty much sums it up

I'd be fine with Clarkson if he was making $1.5m, not $5.25m. Jarmo has to be the dumbest GM for not insuring an injury riddled player because he wasnt going to play half of the 1st year of the contract.

Again, you're conflating the decision to make the trade with the decision not to insure the contract -- not only are they not the same thing, but in fact one action was taken to rectify the mistake of the other. The fact that the contract wasn't insured made the trade necessary. Since youwould prefer to complain about the trade, you're making up a downside (Clarkson playing over better players due to his salary) that is speculative and unlikely.

As a fan of the 92-05 Edmonton Oilers, I know the pain of cash strapped ownership.

But I think Clarkson has a few decent years left in him and you're in a pretty good cap situation even with Clarkson's horrible contract.

On principle it sucks to have Toronto throw its money around, taking advantage of another team's financial situation, but that's life.

So now I've learned that the lack of insurance wasn't because it was disallowed, but because we opted out.

My assessment has now gone from "smart move" to "well, at least it was an okayish recovery". :shakehead
I really hope he improves his production.

No matter how you slice it, it sucks for us

I thought your double-take positive analysis of the trade was due to realizing the trade rectified an mistake not related to the trade itself. If that's true, how would the exact nature of the mistake be relevant?

I hope Clarkson improves for your guys sake. He was regularly outplayed by minimum salary players. It's a tough pill to swallow, but I guess its strictly financial.

Well...Toronto's Zoo is nice too.

Seriously wondering how Jarmo still has a job...Gaborik, Boll, DMac, not insuring tens of millions of dollars in contracts :shakehead

But "hey...he drafts well"... supposedly....we just won't know if this is true until 2020.

Wish everyone would stop calling Nonis and Shanahan wizards, they're just extremely lucky their bosses have 30 million dollars to toss into a burning dumpster.

This deal definitely makes sense for CBJ unless you guys magically become a max cap team in the next 3-5 years.
