you have the game pvr'd? If so, can you go back and watch the few minutes of pregame and confirm the clip of Ehlers getting slashed? I think it was within 5 minutes of the game starting...

I've got GC. I saw the clip you are talking about. Staal gave fly a wicked slash to the back of his leg. They showed fly on the bench in obvious pain. There were also a couple of big hits shown as well (one from dumbo IIRC). I would put money that the Staal slash is the culprit based on fly's reaction.

Surely not class act, gentlemanly, respected player Eric Staal? :sarcasm:

Great White North eh...
I find Romanuk and Galley are attempting to call it up the middle...kind of cheering for both. We're all so used to the homer call - and not that Beyak is a super homer like Jack Edwards or anything but he's got a definite pro-Jets tilt - that anything not explicitly pro-Jets is regarded as hostile.

Considering they both work for a Canadian network and the telecast was aimed at a primarily Manitoban audience, I would prefer a slight edge toward homerism.
There's no need to pander to a Minnesota audience.
I didn't mind them last night, but the previous 4 games you could tell they were not Jets fans.

Does anyone anyone have concrete sources on Ehlers being healthy scratched or is it all speculation based of the post game interview? Curious to hear why you would think that would happen. It would basically mean he dropped significantly in the team hierarchy over night...
______________________________________________________

It does not make sense that Maurice would scratch Ehlers if he was perfectly healthy, or if he wasn't playing well ??

1) Why would you scratch a 30 goal scorer ?? and 60 point a year man ?? something would have to be really wrong for Maurice to do this ?? Ehlers is not a trouble maker, so I'm sure he was not 100 % healthy. Also Ehler's and Laine are good friends, so Maurice would have to have a good reason. I can't see Maurice upsetting the team chemistry by doing something like that.-- It's really crazy to think this would happen--and I don't think this is possible.

2) If Ehlers was not playing well- then Maurice would not make him a healthy scratch, he would demote him to a lower line like he's done before, to send him a message. He would not just scratch a $ 6 million dollar player who always has a great attitude just for the fun of it--doesn't make sense ???

You'd have to conclude this--Ehlers is a little banged up, and the injuries started to flare up, and he wasn't skating with full speed, and Maurice decided that since they were up 3-1 in the series--he'd rest him. That's the only thing that makes sense.

Maurice does not divulge the "state of health" of any players these days. I think Ehlers will be back in full force for round 2 of the playoffs.

Bruce BooDreau and his team of victimzed boyscouts. Surprised he didn't call for an Ehlers suspension for bruising Staal's stick with his ankle.

I am comfortable in my own intelligence thank you very much.

I am also quite happy to have people disagree with me.

But just to set the record straight this is "exactly" what Maurice was asked and how he responded.

Reporter: just a question on Nicolaj Ehlers. Bit of a surprise there with him coming out. Matt Hendricks told us he sort of first got wind he might be a player last night. So was this something that Ehlers was battling or?

Maurice: Yeah yeah he just wasn't feeling right. So we didn't put him in. There's really....He skated yesterday, he skated today, wasn't quite where we wanted him to be, would I've made a different call at 2-2 or 3-3 probably but at 3-1 wanted to be real sure.

Reporter: just to be clear. Would it be an illness as opposed to an injury?

Maurice: Yeee-aaah. It's just kind of a malaise (funny looks and grins here)

You can interpret those comments many ways and body language facial expression plays a part.

It's a "yeah, you're not getting me to tell you if he's injured or where he's injured and you know it" response.

Nothing more.

That's one interpretation. There are others.

He could be injured
He could be concussed.
He could be a healthy scratch
He could have broken a team rule.

It wouldn't mean he has dropped in the "team heirarchy", maybe Maurice saw something in practice from him that he didn't like and wanted to send a message.

I find it hard to swallow that Maurice would have the balls to healthy-scratch Ehlers when the Jets are on the verge of clinching (Imagine if the Jets had blown the 3-1 series lead and it later came out after the series was over that Ehlers was a healthy scratch in Game 5 where the Jets could have clinched, the shitstorm would be immense).

On the other hand Maurice's demeanour in the post-game press conference was strange and it's odd for a player to be in all the practices and not play in the game with no reports of a player taking a bump in practice.

The other piece of "evidence" is that Hendricks said he found out the "night before" the game that he might play. That can be taken either way for or against Ehlers being a healthy scratch.

It was a dumb move if Ehlers was a healthy scratch. If I was a betting man I would bet against him being a healthy scratch though.

That's one interpretation. There are others.

The Jets would not have had him take the morning skate or the practice the day before if he was concussed.

I also don't see the Jets scratching a player in the playoffs over breaking a team rule. It has to be either an injury or a healthy scratch. I think its an injury inspite of Maurice's strange behavior.

I think I'm equally torn now between a healthy scratch and perhaps concussion symptoms.

Oh ffs. What if it's just a sore ankle FROM THE WICKED FRIKKING SLASH HE TOOK N THE PREVIOUS GAME?????

After re-watching Maurice's comments several times, it sounds exactly how he was describing the concussions to Mason and Hutch. He was unwilling to clairify whether it was an injury or an illness to Ehlers. It is entirely possible that a concussion is not confirmed but with the experience they've had this year they just decided not to take any chances.

Maurice's comments would be not untypical for him if this was the case.

It's Maurice body language and facial expressions that make it look more like a healthy scratch to me. I'm undecided now.

As for the ankle theory. He skated at practice on Thursday. He skated in the morning skate. If would be much more likely they would have rested Ehlers ankle if that was truly the case. That part doesn't make any sense to me and why I discount the theory Oake put forward in the broadcast.

It makes perfect sense since as Maurice said he would have played him in a more critical situation. He skated in practice. The ankle was bugging him. They decided to let it rest. No big conspiracy. Jeez. Just like when Laine took the shot off the ankle. He skated in practice and then was a game time decision depending on how it felt. But go ahead and continue to follow magic bullets.

Where did he say the ankle was bugging him? I watched them several times. I never heard it once.
