So you recognized like the least famous member of the Gimme Gimmes?!

I think he was the only one who's other band I wasn't familiar with. I'll have to check them out.
Ive seen them so many damn times over the years. I think CJ Ramone was on bass that night, I dont remember who the other guitar player was though.
Yeah, I was watching some of the quinceanera video and saw him there. I was totally bummed to miss them! They played here a few weeks ago at the HOB in Anaheim but I couldn't make it. I'm not sure if he's still playing with them. But that was super cool! The Gimme Gimmes are such a fun show. It never gets old.

Back to Quicksand, a few years ago when they toured right after COVID they had Stephen Brodsky playing guitar. Cave In is another one of my favorite bands so having him play with Quicksand was awesome for me! IMO Cave In is a band that never got the credit they deserved. Such a wide range of styles and sounds through the years. Their latest album (Heavy Pendulum) is a friggin masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

I just saw that Quicksand is going to be touring with Refused on their farewell tour in the spring. I might have to head out for that one. I havent seen either of those bands since the 90's.

Yeah I bought tickets. I had tickets to see Refused when they broke up in 1998. I saw them at the FYF Fest in DTLA back in 2012 (I think). I didn't realize they put out two new records since they got back together. I didn't even realize they had gotten back together.

I watched the first few episodes of the The Bear and they actually played Refused as part of the sound track. I hadn't listened to them in a decade.

I also love when the most fervent anti-capitalists get turned into a corporate product. It's like buying Che t-shirt at Hot Topic.

My wife watches that show, and the soundtrack is surprisingly deep pulls and a lot of good to great songs. It uses music surprisingly well for a television drama.

Check out Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork, Hot Snakes, The Night Marchers and The Sultans to get the full John Reis (Speedo) experience! The guy is a legend and probably one of the hardest working musicians in the underground scene.
Thanks for these, some great recommendations here and adding a bunch to my Spotify punk playlist

Yeah it's pretty humorous. I do love their music including the pre- Shape of Punk to Come and their lyrics don't offend me in the least but lets not bother going down that road. That said, I was really annoyed when they did their reunion back in 2011 or 2012 (dont' remember which) and they were charging $50 a ticket. I don't have a problem with band charging what they need to making a living but at that time punk shows were still usually <$25 even for most of the big bands so I thought it was a total cash grab.

I'm assuming they don't have control over their music being played on TV or at sporting events but I could be wrong. I'm assuming the record company has control over that? Still a funny contradiction either way.

Now as far as practicing what you preach, I'll have to give Fugazi credit for charging $5 for a ticket in the late 90's. The service charge was almost as much as the ticket. Only saw them once and it was fantastic!

If you do give them all a listen I'd be curious what you like or don't like. Please share! It's all kinda similar but there are certainly differences particularly with DLJ / Pitchfork. BTW.. I'm fairly certain my original screen name here or LGK was drivelikejoewho.

Did anyone else go to a venue in Fullerton called Club 369 back in the 90's? A friend of a friend's band Pigs in Space used to play there a lot and I know a few members were huge Kings fans. That was such a great little venue to see bands and drink some beer.

I saw Rocket when I was in College. The campus bar would hire bands to play there. This included signed bands. I think I saw Bad Brains.

After giving all the Speedo bands a good solid chance and a couple of listens, I think Rocket from the Crypt is the one I'll keep coming back to.

Really just love their sound, and the blending of faster punk rock with the horn section of a ska band. Good good stuff there!
The songs "On a Rope" "I'm not Invisible" and "Get Down" were highlights for me.
Really just all of both Live from Camp X-Ray and Scream Dracula Scream are really solid the whole way through.

Drive Like Jehu... I kind of wish these songs were instrumentals? Musically, these are a great bombastic well played put tracks. But the vocals just kind of Ruin it for me. Kind of reminds me of a early White Stripes type of sound? Definitely a band trying to find it's sound, but it's missing... something to complete the package? I can't really put my finger on it 100% so hopefully that makes sense.

Pitchfork, I feel like I liked the least, but this is totally a personal taste thing. This kind of sounds like a little like early Radiohead if they were American? This one just feels like a band I can see people liking but it's just not for me. I do really like "Thin Ice" though.

Did both Pitchfork and Jehu only ever put out one album?

Keeping with the punk theme, here's a recommendation of one my favorites from the Midwest:
Off With their Heads "Shirts"

Awesome that you took that deep dive!

RFTC is awesome and glad you enjoy them! Not sure how many records you listened to but that Live From Camp X-Ray is a favorite of mine. They have a very extensive cataloge to say the least. Scream Dracula is great but I think i'm just burnt out on it. Still very good though. Not sure if you listened to the album Group Sounds but I'd give that listen if you liked those other two you mentioned. It was a later release like X-Ray. RFTC broke up but they still play once in a blue moon or maybe just Halloween which was always a staple of theirs. They are playing at the end of October in SD and I got tickets for it.

I get the Drive LIke Jehu criticism and the appeal of it just being instrumentals. Quite frankly, they are offputting to people unless you really dig the math rock sound. Drive Like Jehu put out two records a S/T and "Yank Crime". they are both very similar. Pitchfork only put out the one record. DLJ, Pitchfork and Hot Snakes are all fronted by Rick Froberg (RIP) with John Reis on guitar. I'm a Rick Froberg fan but much more in tune with John Reis' work more than his. I absolutely love the guitar playing on the Pitchfork record. Rick's vocals kinda remind me a little of Les Claypool on that record.

Gonna give Off WIth Their Heads a listen...

I dig it.. going to pick up the vinyl. I listened to what I think is some of their newer stuff and didn't like it as much but this record jams! It kinda reminds me of the Bronx which is a band I should listen to more.

I saw the breakup show in the early 90’s in Hollywood and just saw them open for Hot Water Music. I really like them but, Gorilla Biscuits > Quicksand.
Yeah I bought tickets. I had tickets to see Refused when they broke up in 1998.
The most disgusting cover of a song I ever heard was Crazy Town covering New Noise.

I saw Pearl Jam open for Fugazi at the Palladium. Those shows were amazing.

I saw No Doubt open for Sublime at 369. That venue was super cool. I also saw Inside Out (Zack from Rage) and many others there.

I can’t believe I am admitting this but I played guitar in Pigs in Space for a few months…..
I saw Rocket when I was in College. The campus bar would hire bands to play there. This included signed bands. I think I saw Bad Brains.
I saw Rocket open for Bad Religion in 1991 in Tijuana at a place called Iguana’s. As I recall they had a guy wearing only yellow converse introduce them.

A few years ago I had gone down the YouTube rabbit hole watching live performances and stumbled across Jane's addiction live at Mt baldy in 1990. I grew up in Claremont which is at the base of Mt Baldy so this blew my mind. Mt Baldy village was spared by the recent bridge fire btw.
I grew up in Upland, we probably met at In-N-Out on Foothill and fought……lol though probably not!

Did you go to shows at Pitzer Pit? I saw Jawbreaker, Down By Law, Face to Face and so many more.

That's almost about the same time as I saw them. I saw them in the city of Irvine, about an hour and a half from TJ.

I used to have all my ticket stubs taped to the wall at my parents house when I was kid, I put them all in a folder a few years back. Its a trip to look back at them and all my old vinyl every once in a while and think of how cool the early 90s were. The Valley had some of the craziest hardcore shows. I remember seeing Inside Out in a basement in Granada Hills, I think it was called Cell 66. Or Insted at the Country Club in Reseda. Now a days, I will go to a show every once in a while but I just hang out in the back.

I had a big box of show flyers that I think my dad threw out. I was super bummed about that one.

Glad you like it! Home is probably their single best album, but I would give Be Good if you haven't already. The most recent stuff is some acoustic sets they were experimenting with during covid and it's kind of hit or miss.

Edit: In Desolation also has some really great tracks and some decent tracks. It feels like them finding their sound a bit.

I think you might be a bit older than me. I'm 44 - graduated in 1998. I started going to small shows when I got to high school in 1995. I don't know if you went to shows at the YAC in Claremont but good lord what a spoil of riches that was in hindsight. They were all FREE too! I would wager to guess we have definitely crossed paths as I was at that Sick of it All show at the Showcase in 1997 and at least one of those Avail shows. I also remember seeing them at the Whisky a few months later with AFI opening. I'll never forget Davey Havok with bleach blonde hair and X's on his hands in the mosh pit. Years later I saw Quicksand open for Deftones at the Palladium and Rick Rodney from Strife was in the mosh pit.

EDIT: I just found an 8mm tape that I recorded in 1997 at the YAC with Far on it. I hope it still plays. I'll upload it to YouTube if it does.

I did go to shows at the (Claremont) colleges. I know I saw Rhythm Collision at Pitzer in some rec room. I don't even remember a lot of the shows I went to there or YAC at Claremont High because there were so many. Rhino Records had some good in-stores too. There's a great video on YouTube of Rage playing at the Claremont Colleges in 1991. KSPC has all kinds of legendary recording of bands playing on air - Operation Ivy being one of them.

My first "real" show was seeing Rancid at the Glasshouse in April of 1996. Rocket from the Crypt was going to open but Lars came on stage before they played to say they had gotten in a car accident and they found a band named Quasar to replace them. That band was actually the Beastie Boys playing the songs off Aglio E Olio. It was awesome! I was bummed to not see Rocket from the Crypt then as that was the Scream Dracula Scream tour.

I had a big box of show flyers that I think my dad threw out. I was super bummed about that one.

I threw all of my zines and flyers out about 15 years ago because my mom is a packrat and I do everything in my control to never become that way. I really regret it. I threw away so many memories. I had just about every ticket stub to every show I went to. Oh well! I've been tempted to buy old copies of Mean Streat and Skratch off ebay but so far haven't. I have a single show flyer form the band I was in and that's it. I'm not even sure where that is anymore.

I've always been bummed I wasn't a teenager a bit earlier. I feel like I missed out on so much. Having lived in Long Beach for 17 years now I would've loved to experience Fenders. A guy I used to work with was big into the scene in the 80's and talked about all the chaos at Fender's, The Country Club and some of the other legendary places. I still feel lucky that I got to see so many bands and am fully embracing 90's nostalgia. I've accumulated so many records in the past few years. I'm lucky that I was collecting some vinyl back in the 90's. That stuff is worth so much money now. I don't really care about that but it's cool to have original pressings of some classics.

That's awesome. I wonder if I saw you play with them. I thought they were pretty good. Original material was good, but I really enjoyed their covers of The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel and Strength by 7 Seconds. I'm trying to remember if I saw them play at Cup of J in Pomona or just hung out with them there.

Dominic, the bass player (I think), was the older brother of one of my friends growing up. I shot a concert of theirs at 369 with multiple cameras and edited it together in the late 90's. I sent a copy to Kirk, the drummer, but that was probably my last contact with them. I should convert it and upload it to Youtube sometime.

I remember seeing Bad Religion at the Palladium back in 1993. Green Day, Rancid and Seaweed opened for them. Such an awesome show. There was a time when Bad Religion were the band I had seen live the most.

Does anyone remember their first concert? Mine was New Order, PIL and The Sugarcubes in '89 at Irvine Meadows. A month later, at that same venue, was Love & Rockets with The Godfathers. A month a half later, The Cure at Dodger stadium with Love & Rockets, Pixies and Shellyan Orphan. That was a great stretch.
