I think he was the only one who's other band I wasn't familiar with. I'll have to check them out.

Ive seen them so many damn times over the years. I think CJ Ramone was on bass that night, I dont remember who the other guitar player was though.

Yeah, I was watching some of the quinceanera video and saw him there. I was totally bummed to miss them! They played here a few weeks ago at the HOB in Anaheim but I couldn't make it. I'm not sure if he's still playing with them. But that was super cool! The Gimme Gimmes are such a fun show. It never gets old.

Back to Quicksand, a few years ago when they toured right after COVID they had Stephen Brodsky playing guitar. Cave In is another one of my favorite bands so having him play with Quicksand was awesome for me! IMO Cave In is a band that never got the credit they deserved. Such a wide range of styles and sounds through the years. Their latest album (Heavy Pendulum) is a friggin masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

I just saw that Quicksand is going to be touring with Refused on their farewell tour in the spring. I might have to head out for that one. I havent seen either of those bands since the 90's.

Yeah I bought tickets. I had tickets to see Refused when they broke up in 1998. I saw them at the FYF Fest in DTLA back in 2012 (I think). I didn't realize they put out two new records since they got back together. I didn't even realize they had gotten back together.

My wife watches that show, and the soundtrack is surprisingly deep pulls and a lot of good to great songs. It uses music surprisingly well for a television drama.

Check out Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork, Hot Snakes, The Night Marchers and The Sultans to get the full John Reis (Speedo) experience! The guy is a legend and probably one of the hardest working musicians in the underground scene.

I watched the first few episodes of the The Bear and they actually played Refused as part of the sound track. I hadn't listened to them in a decade.

Yeah it's pretty humorous. I do love their music including the pre- Shape of Punk to Come and their lyrics don't offend me in the least but lets not bother going down that road. That said, I was really annoyed when they did their reunion back in 2011 or 2012 (dont' remember which) and they were charging $50 a ticket. I don't have a problem with band charging what they need to making a living but at that time punk shows were still usually <$25 even for most of the big bands so I thought it was a total cash grab.

I'm assuming they don't have control over their music being played on TV or at sporting events but I could be wrong. I'm assuming the record company has control over that? Still a funny contradiction either way.

Now as far as practicing what you preach, I'll have to give Fugazi credit for charging $5 for a ticket in the late 90's. The service charge was almost as much as the ticket. Only saw them once and it was fantastic!

If you do give them all a listen I'd be curious what you like or don't like. Please share! It's all kinda similar but there are certainly differences particularly with DLJ / Pitchfork. BTW.. I'm fairly certain my original screen name here or LGK was drivelikejoewho.

Did anyone else go to a venue in Fullerton called Club 369 back in the 90's? A friend of a friend's band Pigs in Space used to play there a lot and I know a few members were huge Kings fans. That was such a great little venue to see bands and drink some beer.

I saw Rocket when I was in College. The campus bar would hire bands to play there. This included signed bands. I think I saw Bad Brains.

After giving all the Speedo bands a good solid chance and a couple of listens, I think Rocket from the Crypt is the one I'll keep coming back to.

Really just love their sound, and the blending of faster punk rock with the horn section of a ska band. Good good stuff there!
The songs "On a Rope" "I'm not Invisible" and "Get Down" were highlights for me.
Really just all of both Live from Camp X-Ray and Scream Dracula Scream are really solid the whole way through.

Drive Like Jehu... I kind of wish these songs were instrumentals? Musically, these are a great bombastic well played put tracks. But the vocals just kind of Ruin it for me. Kind of reminds me of a early White Stripes type of sound? Definitely a band trying to find it's sound, but it's missing... something to complete the package? I can't really put my finger on it 100% so hopefully that makes sense.

Pitchfork, I feel like I liked the least, but this is totally a personal taste thing. This kind of sounds like a little like early Radiohead if they were American? This one just feels like a band I can see people liking but it's just not for me. I do really like "Thin Ice" though.

Did both Pitchfork and Jehu only ever put out one album?

RFTC is awesome and glad you enjoy them! Not sure how many records you listened to but that Live From Camp X-Ray is a favorite of mine. They have a very extensive cataloge to say the least. Scream Dracula is great but I think i'm just burnt out on it. Still very good though. Not sure if you listened to the album Group Sounds but I'd give that listen if you liked those other two you mentioned. It was a later release like X-Ray. RFTC broke up but they still play once in a blue moon or maybe just Halloween which was always a staple of theirs. They are playing at the end of October in SD and I got tickets for it.

I get the Drive LIke Jehu criticism and the appeal of it just being instrumentals. Quite frankly, they are offputting to people unless you really dig the math rock sound. Drive Like Jehu put out two records a S/T and "Yank Crime". they are both very similar. Pitchfork only put out the one record. DLJ, Pitchfork and Hot Snakes are all fronted by Rick Froberg (RIP) with John Reis on guitar. I'm a Rick Froberg fan but much more in tune with John Reis' work more than his. I absolutely love the guitar playing on the Pitchfork record. Rick's vocals kinda remind me a little of Les Claypool on that record.
