In one of the recent GDT threads there were posts about "dance" videos for music. I confess some love for musicals of yore and while I might love some music and not other, the videos here are fascinating nonetheless.

There are a lot out there and if there are some likes, I'll post more. But they ultimately led me to this series: the first isn't the original song, but it fits well. I have immense respect for Fred Astaire and his talent, but Rita Hayworth has been melting my heart for decades. Arguably the best partner for Fred over the years (there were many exceptional dancers he partnered with) she is crazy beautiful. The music matches the dance well.

That dance is originally from the film You Were Never Lovelier from 1942 and appears below. I've no idea how many takes this took but there's no CGI to speak of. It's so very retro but my heart just goes thump thump thump for Rita.

Interesting your Astaire homage...

My Mother enrolled me into dance classes as a young boy... she plunked me down next to her to watch all the musicals including a lot of Fred Astaire...

Dad was a jazz musician, mom a piano player... and they were good at it... I think they adopted me because I can't sing or play an instrument... but I was a hell of a dancer...

Then I found hockey... that was the end of dance classes...

But my love for the old musicals and dance movies never ended... they bring memories of my Mother and Father...

Here's a favorite of mine from Gene Kelly... I love the kids...

And for good measure... my Father preferred Ginger Rogers over Rita... here is Ginger with Fred...

Cool story, thanks for sharing.

I never had dancing lessons and to be honest I was thankful. It was a harsh era when I grew up and if you were taking dance lessons the attacks would be relentless. I have much respect for dancers and the athleticism of many styles. It would have been a most beneficial skill in later high school years being able to dance well but it didn't happen.

Neither of my parents were musicians specifically though my mom played the piano quite well and we had one at home. She taught my sister to play and got her through grade six at the time. I wanted to play guitar but wasn't allowed one until I took and passed some piano lessons. Never happened in my youth, I couldn't see the long picture and didn't have the love of music I have now.

My mom was a huge Elvis fan and I still remember I was the one who told her he had passed away. It hit her very hard. So I never had the exposure to the old dance movies, but by 12 I had seen all of the Elvis movies multiple times. I suspect that the love for Rita Hayworth is related to seeing Ann Margaret in so many Elvis movies. Ginger was spectacular as well and your dad's opinion would clearly be the dominant one. Cyd Charisse had to be up there as well. There are more as well, but those three stand out.

Not related to female partners but this video from the 1980s movie White Knights I thought was pretty cool at the time. Baryshnikov and Hines do a really cool piece of work. It wasn't a bad movie at the time but I'm not convinced it stands up. I was huge into basketball at the time and Baryshnikov made a comment about the beauty of basketball players being able to create in the air while his moves were all rehearsed.

In case anyone thinks I'm going soft...

I don't pay enough attention these days to AC/DC to be honest. It's in part because of local radio's overplay of the band. It's a smart business given the buying power of the listeners and it clearly sells, but I long ago tired of hearing the more popular songs because they beat them to death. The catalogue is deep, very deep so it didn't need to be Highway to Hell or You Shook Me All Night Long exclusively (though I too love those songs) or the two or three other songs that get all the radio play. Interestingly I very seldom hear AC DC on Sirius, it's almost the opposite of local FM.

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord, yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah
!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing, spreads his wings
Oh lord, yeah!
