@buggs ...

Something you posted way back lamenting not getting to see them at the 'Burt in Winnipeg with the advent of Covid mandates...

It suits the mood of Winnipeg today... minus 50 tonight... suits the continuing mandates (for now)... suits our mood I notice with the posts tonight...

They'll be back. April I believe, though I could be mistaken. In my dreams they show up with Amanda Shires. I will be at the show, Covid allowing.

To be honest if they opened for, or were opened by Amanda and her husband, Jason Isbell, I'd honestly be counting it in the top three concerts of my life. It would be so much like the stunning double bills that Tom Petty always pulled off. I only ever saw one show where Petty didn't have the opening act (or in the case of Pearl Jam, where he was the opener and sang with the headliners) join him on stage for a couple of songs. Humility is so endearing when it is genuine.

Thanks for posting these @buggs ...

Love Dire Straits...

You mentioned headphones almost required... because you want to turn it up... if you want to not turn it up and make digital files sparkle try Dynamic Audio Compression... see this article regarding what it does... The Complete Guide to Audio Compression – Icon Collective

I don't like wearing headphones... so in order to listen to My sound "loud" I use Dynamic Audio Compression... I was taught to use it in sound reinforcement situations to not break Local Decibel Code in different public venues... aka Loud without the decibels...

I bought a program years ago for My PC called MediaMonkey Gold and loaded in an Output Plugin that does Dynamic Audio Compression... this is the program I listen to all My music...

I am not sure the DAC Output Plugin is even available anymore... haven't researched it in years... but possibly there is another...

To make a long story shorter... I use a Klipsch ProMedia 5 channel system all rebuilt and re-coned including subwoofer along with this software and connected to My PC with a StarTech 24 bit external USB3 Sound unit...

The sound I want to hear is elevated without the decibels... ensure the components are equally spaced at the focal point (you) and it makes a big difference...

Just an Fyi...

Much appreciated. Hope to restumble on this post when I'm less sleepy and less drinky. :thumbu:

I love Spanish language slow ballads, because I have a hope of keeping up.

The wife was once like "oh hey you're learning Spanish, what do you think of this?" and she put on something from Shakira and I'm like "well she sounds like a lawn mower so noooooo?"

but songs like this are great for learning. Simple versus, a very repetitive chorus.

I guess one question I have, if there's anyone in this thread who knows a little Spanish:

consider the chorus:

"Yo quiero una verdad,
yo quiero una razón;
no puedo comprender por qué no te puedo encontrar"

and I understand everything except "yo quiero una verdad"

Very literally that's "I want a truth". But that seems extremely stilted.

My gut is to translate "una verdad" as "a true thing", as in, "I want a straight answer".

Anyone with any nuance in Spanish, I welcome your responses, ¡muchas gracias!

Not sure if you guys noticed what appears to be a seating change for this show.

I had grabbed 6 seats in Row 2 Centre section, on the floor…they have become Row 2 in the first balcony.

Floor is all standing now… I guess like it was going to be at The Garrick.

Looking forward to the show, saw them a couple times. Also got to see Charlie singing You Wreck Me at a Tom Petty Tribute…with a pretty decent “House Band”, The Dukes. Such a bang on version!

Some songs from the Super Dave Osborne show. The show was taped in Toronto, so it's no surprise that a lot of the musical guests were Canadian. It featured some of the earliest performances of the artists and gave them nation wide exposure.

From season 2. 1988. Colin James performs "Voodoo Thing" off of his self titled debut album. He also performs "Chicks and Cars' and "Five Long Years" on other episodes.

From season 3. 1989. Blue Rodeos "How Long" off of their second album "Diamond Mine"

From season 5. 1991. Jeff Healey "Full Circle" off of his second album "Hell to Pay"

Northern Pikes, KD Land, Celine Dion and the Razorbacks also have performances on the show.

"Sounds like a lawn mower"...

Dude I mean it. Like the beat kicked in and I mean, there were sounds I could recognize AS Spanish. And I did pick out a few words, like "y" and "o" :P but yeah. She is definitely expert-level music for aspiring polyglots!

It also helps if you know the English version of the song. 80s icon Sheena Easton did a lot of Spanish versions too, so this is on my short list of "not-lawn-mower songs" :P

Fun fact: because the lyrics only had room for one syllable, and 'cinco' is two syllables, her hard working man actually works nine to six (a trabajar de nueve a seis). They could have solved that dustup with Dolly Parton so much easier this way!

Being Friday, drinking, felt obligated (to myself only) to post something. Wasn't feeling anything in particular. Then something came up on the playlist.

Grade 10. Into music, but my awakening was only a year earlier when the neighbor across the street (arguably the biggest marijuana dealer in the city at the time) introduced me to 92 Citi FM. One of the guys I went to kindergarten with, who was way more musically aware, joined a band with a couple of older guys. That was the year I was introduced to the Scorpions and I became a huge fan. But like a YouTube algorithm it led to a spiral into Michael Schenker's career so I present you with three gems from those glory years.

Lovedrive was the first album of the Scorpions that I ever heard. It was quite literally my introduction to the band in a smoky basement in north St. Vital. Animal Magnetism was introduced the same year I first heard the Scorpions and Blackout was released a couple of years later in my heyday of fandom of the Scorps. All three albums were mind boggling for a young kid and the cover of Lovedrive (the dude had the uncensored version!) definitely drew my attention. Many songs could be pulled from it but I always liked this one as they could do a ballad like no other:

Lovedrive was also the last album that Michael Schenker played on with the Scorpions. He played with UFO in the intervening years and after Lovedrive created MSG - the Michael Schenker group. He came back to UFO a couple of times and there was also the McAuley Schenker Group (still MSG to me).

So an MSG and an UFO tune seem in order.

Lots of choices for UFO and they were a band I delved into deeply. At one point I had all the known releases, though I suspect I missed many a bootleg. Wish I'd known about the record store in the University of Manitoba bookstore at the time as I'm sure they could have helped find unusual releases. By the time I discovered them I was into my Judas Priest/Iron Maiden phase - I had many unusual Japanese Maiden releases at one point.

MSG isn't just for Chinese food. Lots of versions of this song out there, many live, still very good. Most live versions omit much of the intro.

Don't recall UFO or MSG ever coming through Winnipeg though I saw every Scorpions show that came through from 1980 onwards.

This one also popped up in the playlist and while I never had that experience, it seems related to the story above for that awakening period into the power of music. Never a huge Godsmack fan but I love this video and watching the kids in it. Excellent job by Godsmack for reaching out - those kids will never forget that experience. I bet it opened all of their eyes. Kudos to whatever music teacher arranged for that to happen.

It also contains one of my favorite lyrics to misquote:

"My river is overflowing..."

Which I sing as:

"My liver is overflowing..."
