I like this deal for the Habs. He's a top defenseman and at a reasonable amount and term.

If he went for FA, I'm sure he would of signed with the Leaf$ for 9 million.

Boy this place has really went downhill lately.

If I have to be on drugs for choosing the 25 year old defenseman who just lead NHL Defenseman in goals and even strength points a single year ago over Jeff Petry, then I suppose I am indeed on some hard drugs.

Probably some psychological stuff going on too. Now go on and tell me what goalie is the best because of how many points he had last year!

Yeah, I just don't watch every single Montreal game, so maybe try a constructive response next time.
Ok well let’s just say he’s that good . One of only four d to have 10 goals and 40 pts the last three years . Great defensively to . Getting better with age . Will be solid for 5 more years

Decent contract for now, but in a couple years it could start looking ugly at his age. Time will tell of course

I disagree... I think Petry will be one of those dmen who age well. He's still a great skater, decent puck mover and very solid defensively.... and he has above average hockey IQ.

Right now, no team.
But in a world where teams think the cap is going up every year, he would've received such an offer or close to it.

The difference between Pietrangelo and Petry in a non-flat cap world is not 1-2 million. No one would ever pay Petry 8 plus million nor should they. He is worth what he got.

Yes, Krug is an interesting comparable. Krug is 29 y/o, averaging a little over 50pts/year (better than pretty, similar style), but Petry averages more goals and better defensively. Based on this contract, Krug should get maybe 7-7.25mill/year. We'll see how much he gets and term.

Petry isn’t force fed OZS on an elite offensive team. Put Petry in the same situation as Krug (65% OZS, an extra 1.5 mins per game on the PP with Pastrnak et al) and he’s getting 60+ points a season easily.

I think people tend to stick to a certain perception of a player, so I I can understand why some people see this as bad deal. When Petry got here he was a mobile but soft defenseman. His first full season in Montreal he was being completely outshined by Markov, Subban (a guy roughly his age) and was at around the level of a much younger Nathan Beaulieu. He was 27 years old back then so I guess this perception of a soft, shaky and not very productive 2nd pairing-at-best defenseman just stuck, because it was logical to think we were seeing a finished product. But Petry consistently improved every season since. With the arrival of Claude Julien, his decision-making considerably improved, so that smooth skating was now put to use a lot better, both offensively and defensively. The last two years (coinciding with Luke Richardson's hire as defensive coach) have seen even more marked improvement. He's a lot more assertive now.

Petry is a late bloomer and doesn't play the most spectacular game, so he'll never be "the hotness" for fans. But this is a very good deal for the team.

Great skater, good size, smart player, great offensively and defensively despite often being paired with crappy, AHL defensemen. A quality veteran who is well liked and respected by teammates. Durable player who has missed few games and logs 23 minutes a night.

6 million dollars for that seems a bargain to me.

probably the ones who have to trade for a bottom pair defenseman's rights just to sign him to a $14 million contract.
Nah, I was thinking of another team.
You know, the one who tied up almost as much money to 4 players to the similar number of years without a cup.
Then there is the first round... and I am not talking about the draft.

Has Petry been that good? $6.25M under COVID Cap seems like a lot for a guy who's 33.

The term might be a little worrisome considering his age but yes he's definitely that good. Petry's actually got better with age both offensively and defensively.

Just watch Petry win the Norris in the years to come... This guy didn't hit his prime yet IMO.

His offensive game was often stiffened cuz he had to do both.

Give him a solid D that could back him up and let him fly and rush all the time, he will put up some crazy numbers.

Great player, real solid deal for the Habs. I bet Edmonton wishes they could get a defenseman like this on their team....oh wait, lol.

To be fair to Edmonton, Petry wasn't the best. If that Petry got this contract, Bergevin would need to get out of town for the 20th time...

Great signing by Montreal. Hopefully this means Calgary can re-sign Brodie for a hair under 6 AAV

If he continues to look like he did against the Pens, great deal.

If Pens didn't get lucky with Marino, I really wanted to try and acquire him.

Very happy for this one. Dude has been so underrated since arriving in Montreal. I have been a Petry backer since the start and this is a great deal for him and for the team.

2 years ago I advocated for the Flyers to try and trade for him as I saw him as the perfect partner for Provo on the top pairing. I've always like him and thought he was highly underrated. I like seeing players stay where they are and the team rewarding them for their service. I'm happy for him and the Habs.

Again, I think this was a good day for hockey in general even if he's not a Flyer

learning something from everyone here,
I woulda thought a 33 yr old would not get a raise,
4 years and $6.5M seems a lot to me, entering Flat Cap Universe

If he was severely underpaid in his last contract and his play hasn't shown any signs of dropping off then it's not unheard of for him to get the RAISE he's EARNED
