Proposal: MTL - DAL

It's too early. Who knows how things will shake out in the coming season. But I would tend to suspect that if the Stars find they need any help on D at the TDL they can give up a draft pick readily enough to get an impending-UFA D, and wouldn't need to trade a contributing youngster like Dellandrea.

If this was offered, I’m sure Huges would be interested. Seems like the type of deal that he would be looking for.

There seems to be a fair bit of media buzz around Petry being traded before camp though, not sure how true that is of course.

Also it’s rumoured that Petry has all WC teams on his no trade list (not sure if that includes Dallas with his wife’s ties to the area).

at the deadline

Habs: Jeff Petry (50% retained)
Stars: Ty Dellandrea

Dallas shores up the right side behind Heiskanen going into the playoffs
Habs add a capable right wing prospect who aligns with their rebuild timeline and adds some much needed sandpaper to the middle 6
Dallas isn't giving up on their former first round pick who just put up 28pts in his first full season @ age 22 (he had 27 games experience prior to this year). Nobody has delusions he will be a superstar, but he's definitely seen as a 60pt potential captain material in a couple years.

Gotta give to get, but Dallas probably see's this as an overpayment

This proposal would have Dallas tight against the cap with Hakanpaa on LTIR and Bayreuther waived to the AHL. They would only be able to carry 21 players on the roster.

Dallas would have to send a little more salary to Montreal to make this more palatable for the Stars.

If the Stars are going for another run to the WC finals or beyond this would be a good start to get an established top 4 RD, for a player that’s probably going to be stuck in the Stars bottom 6 again.

Value feels fair to me.

Assuming Dallas is in a position to add at the deadline, Dellandrea isn't a guy you move off your roster. He's a great guy to have in your bottom six for the playoffs

60 pts, really?
I see him as a middle 6 player at most and I like him. He plays with speed and snarl.
Maybe he hits 60pts once in his prime, but can't see him becoming a guy you can rely on to create offence and be 60+ year in, year out.

That being said, I wouldn't trade him for Petry if I was the Stars.
I feel like Petry is going to Washington or Detroit. Re-unite with one of Edmunson or Chiarot while staying close to home (Eastern US).

You gotta give to get. Petry at 50% retained is a significant upgrade on their middle pairing.

No thanks, maybe a 5th rounder.
If he is with the Habs until the deadline and is no better than last season that is probably all he would return. If he plays pretty well all season and there are a lot of teams looking for d at the deadline it could be a 2nd or 3rd.

He played well last season as a top 4 guy : 0.5PPG for a Dman who was not a defensive liability either. I am not sure what people expect. McCabe returned a 1st last year without being as productive but with similar contract / roles. Top 4 Dmen for 2m cap are great pieces to have !

Yeah but he picks where he goes, that limits the return significantly.

Playoff rentals, even for 2 years, rarely return useful roster players. The cost is often high, but is entirely futures. If Petry is having a good season, and Dallas as well but they have a clear need on RD, I could imagine 2x2nd rounders or even a first. Of course, if the preconditions aren't met then it just be a 2nd or 3d, or Petry might be untradable if he's having a bad, or injury plagued, year.

I’d be open to him in Dallas (not at the price of Dellandrea) if Suter was bought out and there was a spot but at the moment we have some young d-men who need a look first.

If he’s available later on this season and the Stars have injuries or other issues with their defense then this will be a thread to pull back up.

There’s not really room for him on the defense unless Suter’s moved since Dallas is on record wanting Harley/Nils to get regular time.

He’ll be in the middle six but I see Dallas having 3 very dynamic scoring lines in a couple years and him having a Morrow-esque prime: one or two bigger seasons but has a 5 year period where he averages ~60pts assuming he stays healthy

Could be totally off base and he never exceeds 50, but I think he has another gear he’ll hit in next couple of years

Absolutely can't wait Petry being offered for every promising player of other teams and also how Petry is worth a 1st. Going to be a GREAT YEAR to be a hf member. Ain't it staff.
