There's a bit of a difference between giving a kid a chance and.... taking him in the 1st round and giving him a near-max ELC contract. If he's showing all the right signs and doing all the right things towards seeking redemption, great... but you can also then sign that guy a bit incognito after he asks not to be drafted, or as a lower pick with a redemption-level ELC instead. It's not all or cancel. And you don't have to queue up with other teams over the right to give him that chance.

Mailleux was drafted 31st overall. Thirty teams already took a pass on him. I doubt playing another 12 games, since the draft, in the OHL has changed their minds
6'3" RHD who oozes skill and skates like the wind. All teams would inquire if they could get him for free.

The teams didn't take a pass on him because they preferred another player, that's just silly. It's not like he went thru waivers or unsigned as a UFA.

Not sure how Kent Hughes is supposed to go back in time to pick him later.

He inherited him when he took over, and waited to sign him until they had seen him for a while.

What did he do again? So many NHL culture problems going on or happened that it's all a blue . Honest question though, because I can't remember. Was this the racist bully?

Took a photo of an 18 year old girl giving him oral when he was 17 and shared it with his teammates. Didn't have permission to take the photo or to share it.

Sexual assault. The bully was Mitchell Miller, and last I heard he was still unwilling to improve. Which sucks. :(

He didn't commit sexual assault, he took a photo of a girl while in a sexual act and shared it. Still wrong but very different things.

According to news papers and the court in Sweden, he was 18 at the time.

Maybe she was 18 too, I dunno. Still a piece of shit move from him.

He was not 18 that is verifiable false, the event occurred in November of 2020. He was born in 2003

Technically that is the term that's used ("assault" doesn't always involve active violence, legally speaking), but I understand what you're getting at.

Assault legally usually refers to a violent threat in nomenclature it refers to a sexual act of misconduct that inls physical.

I think more accurately it would be sexual harassment.

Could be. I'm not fully converscent on the differences and the nuances and G-d willing I never will have to be.

If this is technically sexual assault then okay, but I feel like it would be helpful to have a separate descriptor for what Maillioux did.

Lumping all sexual crimes together seems inappropriate.

He's a convicted sex offender in Sweden.

The sex was consensual but the recording and distribution was not.

Edit: My bad, she was 18 so no child pornography. Was lucky to escape with a fine, now that criminals his age will be convicted the same as adults he would go to prison.

No, you sign him for the minimum ELC with no bonuses, because your predecessor screwed up, or you take the 2nd round pick and if he is still available after the next draft, you again sign him to the minimum ELC as a free agent. Either way, that's giving him a chance. While still acknowledging the mistake your predecessor made.

You can dress it up and justify the signing all you want. The bottom line is its a bad look for the Montreal organization and they don't need it. And I'm sure every parent of every young girl that's been wronged in the same type of situation would agree.

I mean really?

Is him making a bit less on his ELC going to change anything?

It was a bad look when they drafted him. Not now, 1 year later, when the shitstorm is already over.

Spread child pornography (recorded and spread video of oral sex with minor). He's a convicted sex offender in Sweden.

The sex was consensual but the recording and distribution was not.

... If that's what he was really convicted of, that's odd, because HE was the minor. Unless Sweden has different laws regarding majority age.

On topic : if this would've happened in Canada, no one would even be aware of this, because there wouldn't have been any charges, due to the protection network around hockey players. While I think the Habs shouldn't have drafted Mailloux, once drafted, no point in not signing him.

It shows Both Sides fully acknowledge that there are Consequences. Not perpetuating the culture of "no consequences".

So you're saying that if he still signed a pro hockey contract but for a few thousand less, there will have been "consequences"?

No. If he did that there would still people be saying that signing him at all shows there is no consequences.

I think if you're going to sign him, whether it's a max ELC or not doesn't really matter.

So much misinformation..... he is not a convicted sex offender, he wasn't even charged with a sex crime. It was offensive photography and defamation, also it was a picture not a video.
