I have to go with Reinbacher here. It's easy NOW to say that the Dach, Newhook and Barron experiments are failure but almost everybody liked them at the time. Not so much for Reinbacher and, so far, we've been proven right.

I think that's the whole point, though. To be disappointed in something is to initially like it, no? Dach fits that bill for me if it is true he came into camp out of shape.

Hughes has had some tuff luck with injuries. I give him a lot of credit for gambling and making the moves however, when you swing for the fences you risk a “swing & a miss”.

Our picks & trades are still young enough to pan out…so, here’s to hoping.

Uh, no.

Therrien is a big reason why this team didn’t win a cup in the 2010s. Worst coach we’ve had since Claude Ruel and that includes Jean Perron. Julien was not terrible but not great and then he brought in Mumbles who was well on his way to ruining Cole Caufield.

Say what you want about MSL but most prospects have done well under him. This season has taken a lot of shine off as some have no struggled but at least our prospects have mostly improved under him.

Under MB it was a decade long black hole of prospects being wrecked. As if Therrien wasn’t bad enough, you had SL ruining guys in the minors.
You’re not wrong. But it’s a revised history if we pretend that Ducharme wasn’t touted when he was hired as assistant coach.

I hate Therien with a passion, and he may or may not have costed us a cup. He definitely deserves some hate for ruining some prospects. But as a coach, he’s way better than the bad joke that is Marty St. Louis. I’ve never seen a team have such an incompetent coach with no experience before. What makes this insanely worse, is the love and stout defense that has been sent his way.
He has accomplished nothing, and in my opinion. Nobody looks better because of him.
The team desperately needs a system so the players can actually believe they have a chance. Instead it’s been favouritism and lack of accountability while wasting away.

For a guy with zero experience, he has done far more good than the previous clown that was in charge for almost a decade. Imagine Kent in a few years. The potential is there. His ability on getting firsts and seconds with relative ease is fascinating. Yes, mistakes happened with Barron, Dach and Newhook. That Slaf contract might also ruin Kent, but he has plenty of time to repair his mistakes. Michkov didn't want to play for the Habs, period.
Nice cope but Where’s the source

Concluding on Hugo's resume at this stage is like concluding that your kid is a disappointment on their 2nd birthday.

They did their homework on his wrist and decided that it was a risk worth taking. And so far they’ve been proven right on that.

The leg injury was unpredictable. That can happen to any player. No way to know.
Dach admitted his injury was his fault because he thought he was closer to the boards so he tried jumping out of the hit only to explode his knee, he hurt himself really

This board will never tire of absurd premature overreaction. Now nobody trades Romanov for Dach cause of a 30 game sample size? OK.

Thank god the GM seems like they never listen to public opinion cause damn.
Chantal bragged to the media about her influence in nixxing a trade that would have made the public upset

IMO it’s Reinbacher (no fault of the kid though) and it’s not even close, solely on the fact that Michkov is already a PPG player as a rookie on a garbage team. He’s going to be a star in this league for a long time and we all knew this.
The only way this move pans out is if Reinbacher becomes an elite number one RD, and I don’t think any of us truly believe that’s going to happen. I hope he does, but not many scouts ever touted him as such. Steady top 4 D at best probably.

Honourable mention to Newhook. Overpayment for an overrated 3rd line scoring winger who is consistently making bad plays and turnovers and can’t get any assists despite playing with our two best goal scorers.
I see Reinbacher as a possible Matthias Ekholm. Not necesserally a real first dman. It cost to Edmonton a first round pick, Schaefer (former 1st round pick) + tyson barrie. Vs ekholm at 32 years old. Imagine trying acquire on his prime at 26 years old would be? At one point. You need to build your own defense.

Barron is number one, followed by Dach and Newhook. As the first poster mentionned, Slaf and Reinbacher can take the poll position. In the case of Slaf, that 8 year contract will hurt the most.
As disappointing as Slaf has been this year, his production last season gives me a lot of hope. I think once Laine finds his legs, that line will produce.

There is only one good answer to this question: Barron.

You traded a guy that is playing top 6 on a contender team for a guy that barely play NHL.

Nah it helped Avs win a cup.
That doesn't matter.

You give to get. We certainly weren't winning the cup anyway. Moreover, Lek would've been wasted in a rebuild here. We did exactly what we should do, leveraged him as an asset to get picks and prospects.

It won't always work out. In this case? Too soon to say. Baron still has all the tools that make up a great blueliner but maybe he doesn't put it together. He's so young it's too soon to really know. But we also got Hage out of that as we leveraged the 2nd Colorado gave us to move up and take him.

If I were to be able to redo that move today, I absolutely would.

The worst is the Reinbacher pick over Michkov because it was bad at the time and look even worse now. Newhook is #2 for me, i just never saw more than 3rd line potential. As for a trade like Dach even if he bust it was a good gamble i guess.. good big top6 centre doesn’t grow on trees and i cant fault Hughes for trying to get one for a mid first round pick.

I can understand the trade for Dach and Barron. I just can't undestand why we traded for Newhook.

Because they saw higher upside/value in Newhook than whoever would've been drafted with the two picks in the 30s.. the odds of getting a very good player in the 30s are very low and you are lucky to even get a regular NHL player around then. Newhook is still only 23 and has 21 goals and 40 points in 82 games here, I won't be surprised if he has a better career than anyone drafted in the 30s where we would've picked if we didn't make the trade.

Lekky had the goal vs Vegas in the playoffs, but remembering his regular seasons, he had times where he couldn't score in a soccer net....
Getting to play with the guys in Colorado was big for him. He was never going to be a top 6 guy with us.............................so at the time, the trade made perfect sense......that said, we all know Barron has not performed the way we were hoping for, but he is just 22-23 yrs old.

Patience is virtue guys.....hard to have as habs fans.

Well I will be consequent with my takes and will not talk about Hughes as far as draft picks are concerned. If Bobrov goes to Hughes and say that he understands the needs..but we cannot let go of a superior talent like Michkov, we pick Michkov. I just have no doubt.

So Hughes acquisitions that are the most dissapointing...I mean how can it not be Dach. Based on Dach's play but also based on what we gave up. Not Romanov. But the 13th overall pick. And it's not about Dach lack of points. It's CLEARLY about the persona of the guy. How do you not assess that as a GM? how do you not see the lack of compete? How do you make it a MUST in picks but you don't in ACQUISITIONS?

While 2022 was weak on top...my god does it show a lot of depth mid-draft. Nazar, McGroarty, Lekkerimaki, Ostlund, Rinzel (A RD!!!!), Miro...etc.

Now was it worth it at the time based on talent? For sure. For damn sure. But those pros who have access to everything needs to come the question..why in the world would Chicago be given up on such a kid? And how we are not able to assess the compete level of that guy?

Obviously, you have to add Newhook on that list. Kid skates like the wind...doesn't have the brain to process the NHL level. Another thing that we could not see. What value we gave up? End of 1st and 2nd. Not worst than Dach. But obvioiusly lower ceiling for Newhook. But David Edstrom would look great. And you add Akey, Morin or Strbak...good value there.

I was so hyped about Dach last year. Coming into the season I thought he was going to crush it. He absolutely smashed it in preseason. Seemed to really be clicking with Slaf. I was so excited. And then... boom. Injury.

The player we've seen this year? I just don't know who this guy is.

He was also a guy who struggled to produce whenever we played him in our top-6. So had we kept him he'd still probably be producing 30-40 points mostly in the bottom-6 role for us. Sure it's maybe better then Barron, but we also got a 2nd round pick that enabled us to get Hage so there's that to consider as well.

Yeah, I don't see how Lek would've done anything for us here. He was able to elevate his game with better players and that's great but he wasn't doing that here and we were rebuilding.

People want to see more from Baron which is understandable but that guy's still so young. Plus we got Hage out of this... Even if Baron doesn't turn into anything, we didn't give up much and we got Hage. Is there anyone who wouldn't do this trade again?

Would Hughes have made the move if Newhook wasn’t his bestie?

I think that’s my main issue with the rebuild, that Hughes hasn’t demonstrated any ability to generate value for anyone except Quartexx
