It wasn't Rielly's fault. In fact, it was no ones fault. Let's run it backWhere we've had no playoff success?
You see the issue now. Lol

By that logic every player on this team sucks - Rielly was one of the only ones actually shining in a pile of poo

Meh
I've said for years he's a 3rd pairing dman on a good team. He's just way too much money for doing nothing well.
His situation reminds me a bit of Dion Phaneuf, which is a number one defenseman in a "tough" situation, dearth of reliable partners over a long tenure, and the standards just slip over time without anyone noticing until they notice all of a sudden.
It wasn't ever easy to classify Dion, you'd look at his limitations and think this guy is just a second pairing guy? But the status, tenure, contract, it can trick you into thinking he's a number one.
Dunno what's wrong with Rielly but it looks like his head is just not in it.
He's been bad before the baby came.
It would be interesting to know how the organization is looking at his situation. Publicly Berube is very supportive and that’s his nature but it’s not hard to read between the lines of his comments. Kypreos indicated that the team is very concerned about Rielly and if things don’t improve with him, something will be done in the off season. For me, if he doesn’t get his head in the game, they can’t rely on him in the playoffs. There’s way too much at stake.Probably personal issues if not an undisclosed injury or ailment. Right?
Maybe family issues? Marital? I hate being all breakfast television and the like but the 2 goals last night were not just plays being in the wrong spot or a wrong read.
It was pure delayed process and then the slowest reaction, like he was stoned and forgot his role.
There’s the players help group. Sit out this season if you’re struggling. Give us the cap space meanwhile.
Hildeby wasn’t good but on the third goal Rielly had the puck at his feet and was stumbling around like a drunk. There’s something seriously wrong with the guy. He’s not capable of defending right now and he plays defense. Huge issue for the team.I'm not a big Rielly fan anymore due to his lack of offense/speed which makes his brutal defensive play stand out even more .. but blaming him for last night is beyond ridiculous .. we had a house league tender in our net for god sakes .. this kid hildebeast .. common man he even looks off balance when standing in da net
I would think a wife who was also an athlete would make sure he gets whatever rest he needs to perform.
Kyper thinks he made have lost a step. Maybe Tessa can help him regain that lost step?I would like to see his fitness test results and Body Mass Index results. He might just be simply too fat.
Rielly has always been an atrocious player defensively his entire career, definitely one of the worst in the NHL. I’ve been saying this for a decade.
All these years his supporters blamed his partner but it is clear he is the real problem.
It is simply now more apparent how bad he is when you have McCabe, Tanev and OEL who are vastly superior.
At this point he is bottom pairing material at best, a huge liability and he brings absolutely nothing to the table. It is crazy he has been unable to improve any aspect of his game in all these years. His IQ is so low.
It is hilarious how he looks up into the sky so often like what just happened after a goal against that was due to his ineptness and boneheaded play.
This is the most objective post in this thread. Thank you.Why do people lie and gaslight so much when it comes to discussing this player? It's like none of his detractors can discuss him without constantly telling lies lol.
Just a few takes I've seen on the last couple of pages alone:
I will concede that Rielly isn't the strongest defensively, and from D-men who have played at least 1000+ minutes at 5v5 the last three seasons, he's within the bottom quartile for xGA/60, but he's also in the top 15% for xGF/60, so you take the good with the bad. Plus, he generally tightens up defensively in the playoffs. Again, this season he is not doing well and producing below his usual level, but let's not rewrite history and tell lies to try and manipulate people into believing that he has been some junk d-man who fluked his way into putting up points or try to make him look worse.
- Rielly is a PP merchant, and that's why his production is as good as it's been (Rielly has been one of the top 5v5 producing d-men for a while now and our PP has sucked of late)
- Rielly was bad last season and has been bad for multiple seasons now (Rielly has produced at a 55-60 pt pace or better since 2018, and last season paced for 65 pts, was a +7 and was 15th amongst all NHL D in 5v5 pts and 4th in 5v5 GF/60)
- Rielly sucks at the PP (Rielly is in the top 10 for power play Pts/60 amongst D-men the last 5 years)
- Rielly hasn't been good since the Tampa series (Rielly was literally our best player against Florida, he led the team in points and +/-, and him and Schenn were our only positive +/- d-men)
- Rielly was horrible against the Bruins (While this was not his best series and he did not produce as much, he was still on the ice for 6 out of Toronto's 12 measly goals for, and going into game 7 he had only been on the ice for 3 goals against, unfortunately he was terrible in game 7 but he otherwise had a very steady series and controlled the ice when he played)
If that’s the case I think I lost a step too.Kyper thinks he made have lost a step. Maybe Tessa can help him regain that lost step?
Yeah, I've mentioned the similarities between the two players in the past. Both kinda considered #1 D-men by default, both closer to solid top 4 guys asked to do too much outside their capabilities. Much like Bozak as our miscast #1C at one point. His situation reminds me a bit of Dion Phaneuf, which is a number one defenseman in a "tough" situation, dearth of reliable partners over a long tenure, and the standards just slip over time without anyone noticing until they notice all of a sudden.

I roll my eyes when I see people use that as an excuse, it was thrown around when Tavares' production was taking a dip too. Highly doubt these guys are up in the middle of the night feeding their newborns. They have nannies, soundproof rooms to sleep undisturbed, etc.The whole kid thing also is BS
He makes 7.5M...he can't fly in laws in? Get a nanny? You'd think his athlete wife would know he needs sleep/rest etc to perform.
I noticed the other day the vast variance in the plus/minus of the top 10 scorers.Per Statmuse.com, Rielly has been a -8 in the last 10 games and the month of January. He has been a whopping -29 in our 17 losses and only a +13 in our 20 wins. He's back up to a -16 on the season, way worse than the next player on the team, Myers (not so conincidentally his partner for a number of games) who is a -5. He is a -18 in 33 games against teams in the East, teams that we vye for playoff spots. He is -20 against teams from the Metropolitan.
Regardless what you think of +/- as a valid stat, it's still a stat that measures a player's overall impact on goal differential when they are on the ice. This guy is getting scored on while he is on the ice a hell of a lot more than any other player on the ice ainec.
Throughout his career, prior to his struggles this season, Rielly has proven to be no worse than a #2 quality defenseman
Anyone who doesn’t think he’s been a bonafide top pairing D frankly overrate the quality rest of the league.
Defense has never been Rielly's biggest strength, but he wins his minutes 5v5. Rielly has had a positive 5v5 goal differential every year for the past 7 years. He is +79 at 5v5 over that time. This while averaging over 23 minutes a game on our top pairing, and playing all situations. I think that's what he means by #2.Rielly has consistently been very bad defensively throughout his career, so I guess it depends on what you mean by #2. If you mean a player that will rack up a bunch of points, but will usually lose his minutes 5v5, then yes, he is a #2. I said Dubas should trade Rielly in the final year of his contract. Instead he signed him to that boat anchor.
I was sitting right behind net for 1st goal which was a snapper from top of circle .. the tender lost his balance and positioning before da shot as he moved to his right and he ended up going down too low on his feet and got beat over da shoulder .. a top end defender might have been closer to shooter and got his stick on puck for deflection but Rielly at least forced shooter wide .. bottom line team needs a save on that shot .. if tender moves quicker/agile and stands up straight it hits him in shoulder .. this should never be a goal in pro hockeyIt would be interesting to know how the organization is looking at his situation. Publicly Berube is very supportive and that’s his nature but it’s not hard to read between the lines of his comments. Kypreos indicated that the team is very concerned about Rielly and if things don’t improve with him, something will be done in the off season. He’s never been good enough overall to be considered a number one defenseman. When he was more effective offensively it was easier to overlook his defensive deficiencies which were always pretty glaring. Dubas paid him like a #1 even though he was not dependable defensively so they played him as a #1. Leaf fans love their heroes and nice guy Rielly has been given a long leash until recently when his lack of defensive awareness and effort have become impossible to ignore. For some of us fans, this is nothing new. I hated his contract the moment it was signed. It’s just that now more people are jumping off his band wagon. No even remotely true. Way to show your agenda in just the first sentence of your post.
Rielly surely has some defensive deficiencies and always has, but saying he’s been one of the worst in the NHL his entire career is utterly ridiculous.
His bad play this season isn’t status quo and just being noticed because he’s being compared to Tanev, McCabe and OEL. He’s just not playing well on a personal level; struggling in ways we don’t usually see him struggle.
Or some people don’t watch good top pairing defenseman on other teams enough.Throughout his career, prior to his struggles this season, Rielly has proven to be no worse than a #2 quality defenseman
Anyone who doesn’t think he’s been a bonafide top pairing D frankly overrate the quality rest of the league.
Totally agree. I threw the remote across the room when I read about the contract Dubas gave him. BTW. The league already knows. Ton of scouts are at Leafs games.Rielly has consistently been very bad defensively throughout his career, so I guess it depends on what you mean by #2. If you mean a player that will rack up a bunch of points, but will usually lose his minutes 5v5, then yes, he is a #2.
I said Dubas should trade Rielly in the final year of his contract. Instead he signed him to that boat anchor. The Leafs need to convince him to move on ASAP before the rest of the league figures out he’s washed.
