Rumor: Morgan Rielly (will agree to waive NMC) to SJ

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Can Goodriw be a 3c?
Fourth line center who also plays both wings, but more importantly, his contract expires next summer. Then you use the roster spot and cap space however you want. I THINK I've heard that he's a good locker room guy as well. The Leafs culture and mentality needs improvement and this could maybe help with that.

They should just keep him instead of sending him for nothing or a few 4th rounders or whatever.

Defencemen are valuable and if he has even a bit of a bounce back season his value is much more and everyone seems to have cap space now. Like what’s the rush to get rid of him? Ppl act like he’s a humongous boat anchor with no chance to rebound.

Leafs fans are the worst.

Stoppred reading before "Leafs fans are the worst."

Btw, in case you're having trouble understanding how trades work it's the Maple Leafs organization that's trying to move Reilly, not the fans (as they have literally no say in it).

Is Morgan Reilly even overpaid right now? How much would he get as an ufa in this cap environment?
In theory probably the same, but in practice, most teams aren't looking for a left handed guy who isn't physical and doesn't penalty kill. He also doesn't play his off side ever, so that further limits potential interest. Go through the rosters of all 32 teams and check their left-handed D and what style of D they need to add on their left side.

I think Rielly gets either the term (4 years) or the dollars ($7.5m), but not both. Too much supply not enough demand in the market for a guy like him at this moment in the NHL.

If you stopped reading right before “leafs fan are the worst” you wouldn’t have quoted and commented on “Leafs fans are the worse”. Soo…

Anyway, many Leafs fans are railroading this guy despite being the best D they’ve had in a decade. He takes 1 step back and it’s like the end of the world with how bad he gets trashed. It’s no wonder Marner wanted to go.

Leaf fans who say “take him for free we’re just happy to clear the cap hit!” are shallow sited and not real fans.

Look at the astronomical prices guys have been fetching this offseason with all the xtra cap and no one to spend it on.
There will definitely be a market for Rielly and teams believing he can be a good player. If Toronto held even 1 mil back he is that much more enticing. Ppl aren’t giving him the due respect with the market the way it is now.

Obviously, but where's the fun in waiting for a deal to be completed before yaking it up.

Like what’s the rush to get rid of him?
He's terrible in his own zone, just low effort and stands there watching, can't clear the front of the net, any aggression is performative. He's a huge liability in his own zone. Might be the softest 220 pound player in the league.

People here really talking about retaining on a contract that is 7.5 million in an era where the salary cap is being projected to go up 9.5 million per year over the next 3 years and likely accelerating once the new TV deal kicks in. Toronto will not have to retain salary if they want to trade Morgan Rielly. Hell, with the America-Iran thing still going on, inflation will be so high by the end of the year, my salary is going to be $7.5 million
