Rumor: Morgan Rielly (will agree to waive NMC) to SJ

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.

Huh ? Is he not from the area ? I have serious doubts Toronto would have interest without retention/ sweeteners. Even then … he’s not very good
He's from the Hamilton area but not all players from that area want to be dealt to Toronto. A lot don't. A guy looking for a fresh start from the Canadian market probably isn't going to hop to the most extreme version of that. He's got family in Pennsylvania too which might be why he reportedly prefers Pittsburgh and Philly.

They had like 6 guys on TSN radio debating this and some 4 were former players.

its wild how none of them were even close to each other on return

it was like "San Jose gets picks for taking the contract" at one end to a "conditional 2nd round pick and prospect" and everything in between

wide variety of opinions on him
Rapidly rising cap, actual salary is below the caphit (pretty relevant for half the league), still 4 years left on the deal for an aging/declining player, played in a system that didn't play to his strengths so potential for him to look decently better with a different coach/system, etc.

A lot of factors to argue for higher/lower value.

That’s perfectly fine w me . Be devastating if he was acquired honestly . Do not want

its pointless to do that... your not eating salary for a mid round pick. if you are eating salary and hes now a 5 mil dollar Dman... hes on a good contract and worth much more.
I agree it's pointless for the Leafs to do it but I don't think Rielly is worth much more as a 5 mil defenseman that is declining and only contributing value if he's producing. Not a lot of teams have that sort of slot open for a player like him. And the ones that do know they can leverage his NTC against the Leafs considering a severe lack of suitors.

I mean 40+ point Dman for 5 mil is prob a steal in this market lol

Vancouver being home is severely overrated. He did grow up there but his family is actually from Hamilton. His wife’s family is Ontario based too. Wouldn’t be surprised if Detroit or Buffalo would be of interest tbh.
Hes mentioned in the past his love for BC and honestly if you're rich and love the outdoors and world class food, Vancouver is a pretty desirable place.
As a nucks fan I'd be ok with him coming home. Play him with Hronek and let Zeev and Willander develop with easier minutes.
