Not really the point though. If the league is going to say there is an arbitration process there should actually be an arbitration process.

The current arbitration rules for on-ice suspensions have been collectively bargained between the NHLPA and NHL—the NHL hasn’t unilaterally imposed the rules.

If the NHLPA wants to negotiate changes, such as reducing the arbitrator appeal threshold, or removing the commissioner from the appeal process, that’s something they can do now or in the next CBA cycle.

It's not about the threshold.

I'm saying Bettman is acting in bad faith with the arbitration process. What's the point of having it if he can't be bothered to get to an appeal until after the suspension has been served?

There's no way Gary would let them remove him from the process. He didn't like the independent arbitrators decision some years back so he got a new "independent" arbitrator.

The idea seems to be if he went over 5 it can be appealed to an independent arbitrator who likely lowers it to below 5.
