I'm well into my 50's and think Reilly is an enormous p***y toddler who should have done what is done within the spirit of the game and started throwing hands instead of hitting a guy in the head with a crosscheck like a punk. Greig is the sort of worm who has been around for ages and the way to show displeasure within the context of the NHL is to (attempt) to knock the hell out of him. And if he takes an instigator, go to the review of it since it was in the last 5 minutes of the game and appeal like so many of them are these days.

But this? This is not it.
IMO this is a situation where people are assuming we Leaf fans are ok with what Rielly did, I am 100% ok with the why of it, but not OK with the how of it.

No one gives a f***. You think Leafs fans are like, oh if we behave for a while I think all the other fanbases are going to like us?

Fans have been bitching and whining about the Leafs for decades. Bitching because of start times. Bitching because they put a UoT emergency goalie in for 45 seconds. Bitching because Leafs fans think Matthews is better than Laine. Bitching because the refs have given them the 29th most PP opportunities in the league this year. Bitching because they flew to St.Louis at 11.40pm instead of 12:00am. Bitching because of Kadri, because of Simmonds, because of Spezza, because of Bunting (who now all of a sudden draws penalties again in Carolina). Bitching and whining because the Leafs let players skate on their ice in the summer.

Seriously, who gives a f*** if you pretend to hate them even more now?
Well said. The bitching and whining from all the Leaf haters is over the top hilarious, maybe I should visit the main boards more often.:laugh:

Yeah. Just like every other fanbase would. Leafs fans are no different.

No, that's simply not true.

Most fan bases wouldn't be smiling, at all, after a loss.

Even less would be happy they lost and cheap-shotted a guy.

Every other fan base would do this? Do you realize that currently on the Maple Leafs board 56 percent of the responses to the question "Are you happy with Reilly's Response" are Yes? Another 16 percent said the response wasn't strong enough.

72 percent of the fanbase has no issue with this.

I already did the math, but I'm a dumb poster.

1 game max for a clean, highly respected player who did something slightly dumb.

x3 because anything Leafs gets so much media attention it's a great opportunity for DPoS to let it be known they don't take this type of stuff lightly.

3 games. 3 games for Mo' what a load of BS but that is my guess.

Should be a slap on the wrist fine and a written warning, we'll see. But that's my guess.

This reeks of a Toronto fan bias.

"Slightly dumb". This is not slightly dumb. Slightly dumb would be dropping the gloves as the Ottawa player turtles in response.

That's a good way of putting it - being upset at the bit of emphatic showboating is fine, could almost be applauded given the scrutiny the Leafs are constantly under for how they respond to every little thing. And yet the way it was done was not correctly as you said.

Has anyone whose caught an instigator penalty this year in the final five minutes of play NOT had the automatic game suspension successfully appealed? And if it were to come down to suspension, for a game, then everyone gets the same thing: a response within the context of NHL hockey for someone being a worm (and Greig is a burgeoning worm, he's one of those guys teams love to have and hate to face) with a known punishment at the end of it.

I think we're seeing the same thing playing out with Rielly that we saw with Kadri a few years earlier.

The team is so soft and has so little push-back, and actually playing with some toughness and grit is so foreign to these players that when incidents like this happen, they don't know how to respond and they are terrified of being labelled as the guy that just stood there and let something happen without a response so that when, on the rare occasions that the team does try to answer back, it's out of measure and out of proportion.

Cross checking a guy in the head for a "disrespectful" empty net goal is an absolutely insane response. It doesn't make any sense and it's insanely dangerous.
Imo what Reily did was all you suggested and add selfish. He put his need for instant gratification ahead of what’s best for the club. The game was over. Now he’s likely going to be missing from their lineup for several games, while they’re fighting for a wildcard spot.

Actually the hate is quite enjoyable at times, yes. To see a bunch of mouth breathers go on and on about our team rather than their own, there's something to be said for that.
