all grieg had to do was square up. its not like he didnt know what response he was going to get. tried to skate to the officials instead.

Isn’t the onus on the instigator to square up? Grieg didn’t need to anticipate Rielly having a psychotic break.

The truth is that outside of Reeves the Leafs are cream puffs who have no interest fighting fair. Grieg is not one to shy away from a fight if it’s offered, even as a smaller guy.

Why would you have a chat with your kid about a slap shot? They are bloody kids and he/she scored a goal. That is a great way to confuse them. What if the goalie comes out the net, misplays the puck and gives it to the opposing team with the net wide open, what should they do? Skate up slowly and tap it in or wind up and hammer it home as quickly as possible?

The irony in this thread is just too great. Trying to justify an aggressive response for a slap shot!
I mean, you could talk to your kid about not being a douche and rubbing in a win on an opponent? Might save him some teeth down the line. Feeling morally right won’t save you from feeling a sore jaw if you’re an asshat.

That said, Reilly should’ve dropped the gloves. He’s going to get 5 or more. Punches get you nothing if you give a guy a second to play some face defence.

Nothing compared to years ago
I can’t remember one act as bad as this, considering the attack came well after the goal was scored, from the blind side, and while the guy was skating to his bench. Can you remember one that was of this level?

How many suspensions has Reilly gotten during his career?

He's never been fined or suspended I don't think, which is my point: he didn't just snap because of an empty-net goal, the circumstances are different than Hunter's.

This isn't even a new-school/old-school thing like a batter doing a bat-flip or celebration after a hit.

This is a nobody, borderline NHL-er at this point, acting like King Kong with a freebee empty netter. Absolutely Rielly deserves to be suspended, no question, but I for one don't mind what he did at all. I would mind a heck of a lot of the kid just tapped the puck into the net and Rielly went after him, but that's not what happened, and context matters.

Grieg is a stupid, irresponsible, unsportsmanlike d-bag who deserved to be punished. Crap like that is begging for a response and the league should at the very least hand out warnings, and then suspensions for this kind of nonsense.

In other news, I guess we'll hit like 5K posts on this subject? Funny how so many people are obsessed with hating the Leafs.:laugh:

I wish I could be surprised that there are people who defend this sort of shit but I am not. Imagine being such a pathetic snowflake that you think someone scoring an empty net goal with a little flair means you should attack their head. Just pathetic. Sit his ass for awhile, DOPS

Just the worst thing ever. Morgan should face criminal charges. 1 year in jail seems sufficient

You really think grieg would have dropped the gloves? He would have just turtled and then people would just be bitching about rielly going after a defenceless player. Would make no difference
Yeah, there's a ton of support for players that turtle.

Lets be real Reilly is a coward. He never gave Grieg a chance to square up and had no intention to. And he was skating to his bench to give his teammates fist bumps.

Dudes supposedly older than 18 getting emotional over a slapshot in an empty net. Mature stuff. Going for the crosscheck to the head instead of dropping the gloves and celebrating it, even more mature.

I guess the positive in this event is that this is another example why Leafs will never win a cup with this core of guys.

Rielly has like 200 PIM in his entire career, he did what he needed to do to a rookie who doesn’t know how to act in the NHL

Greig did not turtle, look at the video. The trainer rushed out to help him. I don't see how anyone can get back up and fight after getting crosschecked in the face. I think Greig would have been willing to fight if Reilly had the balls. It was a beer league move. In a beer league, Reilly would be tossed from the league. He's lucky he plays in a league where hitting a guy in the face with your stick is just a fine or suspension. Reilly should audition for Slap Shot 4. He's got the moves.

So other teams have to score goals certain ways now to not upset the Leads and their fans? Yeah I think you guys have gotten to a weird place and it’s no longer about hockey.

Notice how all the former players are saying Rielly did the right thing and that Greig is an idiot for doing that at the end of the game
Reilly’s reaction was fine, and the suspension will be worth it.

You like to see that from a leafs core player. Unfortunately the rest of the core is charmin soft and don’t really care about wins and loses

Grieg would never square up. Look at how he dropped like he was shot immediately, diving to the ice

We know rats and we know how they act. He isn’t going to answer the bell, he’s a p***y

This is a vet teaching a kid how to act in the NHL

That's not at all w
At the end of the day - he used his stick to put the puck in the net. That's it.

You're saying he should get suspended or fined because he scored a goal. It's probably the worst take ever had.

That's not what I said, scoring goals is what you're supposed to do, what he did wrong was needlessly take a slap shot into an empty net and provoke and instigate the incident. No fines or suspensions should be given, but both players need to be warned.
