People really need to separate the two things here:
1. What Greig did
2. What Reilly did

It's possible to say that what Greig did was a bit unsportsmanlike, and he deserved something coming at his way. It's also possible to say that Reilly deserves +10 for cross-checking an unsuspecting opponent to the head after the play is dead

I personally think hockey needs more animosity and this season has been a quantum leap forward in that area over the last 10 or so years so this is fun.

The way Rielly should have handled it would have been to go rough him up a bit, and then just run an absolute gauntlet of hits on him next time the two teams play, and demand that he fight a couple of times.

With that said, in the heat of the moment I can see losing it and going after him, but what ultimately resulted in a crosscheck to the face after play had ended has to be a 6 game suspension I think.

It's worse than Scheifele on Jake Evans in the playoffs a couple of years ago and Scheifele missed games in the playoffs for that.

I guess it's not quite as bad as Hunter on Turgeon because Greig isn't injured, and that's how the league seems to rate these things, but that was 21 games.

This needs to be 6 I think, but I predict 4 or 5.

Meh Leafs are going nowhere...
Leafs just got beat
Slap shot into empty net was uncalled for.

Fight there? Sure

Face wash? Absolutely

Cross check to the guys head, with 5 secs left in the game, after the whistle has blown, retaliating, in a league trying to reduce concussions…….oh yeh that’s going to be a suspension & well deserved. How long will it be TBD, player safety can’t let a play like that go unpunished, it would sending a massive wrong message. Dumb play by Reilly
this is exactly how I see it as a neutral fan. Just too much

OH NO! Ridley hit the puck very hard into the net, such disrespect! Please, someone think of the children and the example that was set!
So many comments like this in this thread I'm honestly shocked at the sheer volume of them. Really shows who's played competitive hockey and been immersed in hockey culture vs who hasn't. Big reason why these comments shouldn't be taken seriously at all - just straight ignorance.

There is a code in hockey with unwritten rules, and if you cross that line you're going to have to face the music. Like it or not it is what it is

I love the "you haven't played competitive sports/there are unwritten rules you need to follow/etc." argument because it means exactly nothing and is a pathetic gatekeeping attempt because you think competitive sports culture is some 5D chess that "normal people" wouldn't understand.

Unwritten rules/codes are unwritten because of one thing: they're stupid

If this is the kind of on-ice response that is acceptable in a sports culture, then the culture is bad, not the ones who criticize it.

I know that but I don't understand why it should apply to pros. If Greig feels confident with his slapshot, why risk a Patrick Stefan? It's funny how it could be disrespectful to keep playing hard in a close game.

This just in, hockey players are emotional wimps...

I have played competitive hockey and I have been watching hockey for many decades. There is no code for slap shotting a puck into an empty net and to say otherwise is just pure bullshit and being a snowflake.

You know what there is a code for? Charging a player after a play is dead and cross checking them in the head with the intent to injure.

That slapshot into the EN was awesome lol. Need more of that in hockey. Get some piss and vinegar into these games instead of the lame stoicism everyone seems to defend.

Intent to injure give me a break haha. The exaggeration is so extreme.

That EN Slapshot was a big F*CK YOU to the leafs. That's how those come across. Not sure what creampuff leagues you grew up playing in to not understand this.

Heck even Botterill on the panel last night was saying the same thing, and she's almost always against any type of retaliation.

Retaliation was warranted. Rielly defs would have been better off with a hit to the ribs or a face wash but there's good reason why he was fired up after that goal.
