Imagine having to explain to a newcomer that the type of shot you use when you score a goal might hurt some feelings.

And this is supposed to be hockey.

Talk about extremely thin skin, and extremely confusing message to new fans.
This was exactly like baseball where a guy poses after a home run then the butthurt pitcher either beans the next guy in the back or headhunts the perpetrator himself next time through the order.

I clearly meant if he did the same hotdog slapshot middle finger goal and the Leafs did nothing, everyone here would be calling the Leafs soft with no response when they are disrespected.

I don’t think so, I don’t even think it would be big news.

The reaction is what made it such a big deal.

Maybe he goes over and jaws at him or shoves a glove in his face and there’s a little post-game scrum that happens often enough.

Going after a player with a high crosscheck isn’t beating the soft allegations.
If you read all my posts I said it was unnecessary, but my point still stands. If the Leafs did nothing everyone here would be saying they never defend themselves. It is what it is.

I could see it not being suspended. It was a high hit but not the type that had much chance of injury. Mostly just knocked him over. Maybe the ones deciding these things also give Reilly a bit of a break because Grieg egged it on with his hot dogging
Of course it won't be suspended, George Parros is still running DPS. Maybe you'll get a game tops, if that.

Are you being serious or do I need to explain what "want" means?

Explain what want means to you

Like I said - every player had the option of fighting Rielly. Every player declined. It's not something they wanted to do.

They were happy holding him and hugging him.

It was attempt to injure with 5 seconds left in the game. Only reason you are deliberately smashing your stick into someones head is to injure them. Its not a question of if there is a suspension but how many games.

I can understand that, but also at least we’re not baseball where you’re not allowed to hit a homerun late in a game with a 3-0 count.

Greig probably did it wanting a response anyway.

I honestly think if they did nothing, most people wouldn’t know about it.

I never said it would be big news either, lol. And yes obviously the reaction is why we're here on page 30, but if the Leafs did nothing it would be another 'wow the Leafs never respond when other teams disrespect them'.

I'm truly baffled that there are so many hockey fans here so completely fragile that they think scoring an empty netter warrants any kind of physical response at all. Had Grieg held his stick at crotch level and hipthrust the puck into the net it still shouldn't create this response. Don't like a team scoring an empty netter on you? Don't be down late in the game and give up possession.

Truly infantile...

Plenty of empty netters are from slapshots. I think a few of Ottawa's D have empty net Slapshot goals this year alone.

It's not some super unique thing.
Can you provide a game or so?

I doubt a senator dman is up infront of the play 2 feet from the net and slapshotting it into the net

I just don’t see the need to do that

10 games? Is that the worst thing you've seen all year?

Perron got 6.

10 isn't that outlandish given the context of it being right after a goal with seconds remaining in a non-hockey play.

It would be a similar logic to players coming off the bench. Does a goon coming off the bench mean a fight is going to be more violent than a fight that takes place if that goon is already on the ice at the time it is initiated? No. But if they need to penalize it with a long suspension because otherwise there is too much incentive for goons to come off the bench and interject.

If they don't give him a significant suspension, then it teaches players that you can engage in a non-hockey play with intent to injure when the game is already over and best case scenario you take out the star of a rival team with very little consequence to yourself or your own team.

If this was a goon/repeat offender type, it would be a massive suspension. Reilly's only saving grace is that he is a good boy and he is not strong enough to hurt Greig. The floor is 6, which was Perron's suspension (which had a failed appeal fyi). It will likely be higher because of the timing and context of it happening when the game was basically over.

I really didn’t see it that way.

Responding is when the physical ante is raised or when someone gets hurt.

Not when a guy scores a EN. The game is essentially over anyway. Go home and think about your mistakes.

If he did that against any team he was getting decked there. Probably not cross checked cause that’s dumb af. But I think he’s getting dog piled for sure or confetti gloves. Those are probably more appropriate and less crazy responses lol
