not playing victim its just kinda true, even Spezza as a first time offender got 6 games. there are alot more examples but Ill let someone else cover it or well its been 5 pages since this comment Im sure someone already has

The league goes out of their way to claim that player history + precedent are considerations yet in some cases they don't seem to matter. There's zero consistency.

Event with say the case of Bunting last year, despite his reputation, had zero history with dangerous play, still received more games than comparable first time offenders.

There's zero transparency

Just as it sounds.

A lot of emotion from Sens fans. Look at the title of this thread emotionally declaring a 6 game plus suspension.

Users from every fan base coming in here to label Rielly as dirty or a villain.

Half of the people in this thread are in denial about Grieg.

It's funny, but it's clear that some people should move over to figure skating.
It’s declared 6 games because in person hearings are already above 5 games

Gallagher had an in-person hearing and got less than 6 games.

He declined the in-person hearing and played with Parros though, not that Parros would ever have a bias though.

You'll find out soon enough that a two hander to the face is not a hockey play and indeed has no place in the game.

What Greig did is one thing- and it deserved a response, but not that response.

It has nothing at all to do with people needing to move to figure skating, it has everything to do with no matter what happens you're responsible for your actions.

And morgan Rielly is about to receive a 5 game reminder of that.

Bunting had a large history of borderline plays. It makes sense to bring the hammer down on such a player when they do something over the line, to make sure they don't do it again. It's a big difference from a player like Grzelcyk who speared Pacioretty, but is very unlikely to do something like that again.

Well, this is another innovative way to lose by the leafs. This time losing your #1D for a long time over nothing. Letter Z was the most entertaining of course, but they never ever stop delivering

Some teams would use this as a motivation to play even harder but the leafs core don't really give a shit. Aside from Morgan RiReilly ofc but he shoulda dropped the gloves or something instead of this chickenshit stunt that will cost him

Every fanbase can say the same. I’ll go next as a Jets fan. Scheifele with 4 playoff games (first time offender). Dillion just recently. 3 games for what most felt warranted the 5 mins in game penalty and maybe 1 game. See my point?

That's not in the league rules though.

The underlying problem with dpos (and this goes beyond the case of Bunting) is there seems to be this attitude of making it up as they go along

You have no idea what gets said at hearings which will have an affect on suspension length. Obviously a player who believes their poor decision was justified and wants to keep doing it should get a significantly harsher punishment. It make sense the league was waiting for Bunting to slip so they could finally do something to get him to stop.

Well, I think if it was a significant deflection that wouldn't have resulted in it hiting the head if not for Greig's action (raising his arm to try and defend himself) then maybe you weigh that in a bit, but it's not the winning argument some think. In this case, there a non-zero chance that even if Greig didn't raise his arm the stick still rids up into the head, it was reckless regardless.

Of note, the NHL did address the claim that other incidents got off lighter when the player had no prior history, and they brought up Thornton from way back, and Spezza recently, they'll now be able to add Perron.

In the end, this seems like a pretty easy 4-6 games, looking like the latter given the in person hearing. Had the stick not rode up the arm and been a more direct to the head hit, I think we might have seen double digits get considered, so maybe 7-10, but likely landing at 8.

I predict the DoPS suspension video won’t even discuss whether or not Reilly’s stick “rode up” Greigs body before hitting his head.

That question will be low down the list in determining the suspension length. I’d guess the DoPS priority order will look something like:

1) Hit happened long after the play was dead.
2) Hit is clearly retaliatory/predatory, especially given the game state.
3) Reilly cross checked Greig in the head.
4) Reilly and Greig were not involved in a scrum prior to the cross check, where the cross check might have been a more “accidental” result of the scrum.
5) Did Reilly intend to cross check Greig in the head or did his stick “ride up” Greig’s hand or shoulder before head contact?

p.s. I’m also expecting someone will think they’re funny and reply with priority X is the Leafs.

Precedent has been set for this season.

Perron got 6 games for crosscheck to the head after the whistle
Rielly will get 6 games for crosscheck to the head after the whistle

Simple as that. I don't know why people keep bringing up shit that happened years ago.

It's made in bad faith simply because it uses an angle that makes it easy to make up what happened, when there's a front angle video they didn't use that makes what happened clear.
