OMG did you guys see that. He took a slap shot into an open net when there was no goalie. He should’ve just slid it in along the ice. Why would anyone want to a take slap shot which happens probably 20 times a game? Especially when there is no goalie in the way. Imagine the damage to the puck or even worse, rubber marks on the red paint if it hit the post of cross bar. Gary in maintenance would’ve been busy painting those bars on Sunday morning. Seriously. He deserved a cross check to the head. Raising your stick behind you in order to get more power into the shot is such and asshole move where he could’ve snapped it. The fact that the shot was 85mph as to the usually 50-60mph that is allowed by the league is enough to make me mad. Ugh. I don’t blame Reilly. Let’s get the league to make empty net goals illegal if they are too hard or fast.

This belongs in the HHOF

Really no difference between slapping the puck into the empty net and skating right up to the net and guiding the puck in when you're guaranteed to get it in net. The end objective is to run out the clock and get that final goal.

If Greig decided to go all Eddie Shack and ride his stick down the ice afterwards, then you cold make a case of it being classless and against the code.

All the posters in here screaming about the “code” and how dare you slap shot a puck into an empty should be fine with a senators player hunting down a leafs player next season and cross checking them in the face.

You know cause hockey is “emotional” and “f*** around and find out”

Would love to see the reactions if Marner’s neck is bent in half by a stick next season.

That's not true though, a slapper in that situation is way higher risk. Which is why the leafs players see it as a f*** you.

Loser points aside Toronto has one more regulation win than Ottawa with 2 more GP LMFAOOO

You'll be with us soon
I love how fans of rival teams always say "it's Ottawa's Stanley Cup" when we beat them. Beating a rival is always fun.

Unlike Toronto we have been in a Cup final more recently than 50 years ago.
Not illegal, just against the code.

Similar to dunking in the NBA when you're up 30
Big celebrations are much more against the code than this. Greig didn't even celebrate.

It was a minor dick move likely because he was pis*ed that McCabe and other chopped at him with sticks earlier.

Rielly's cowardly blindside crosscheck to the head was just idiotic and dangerous.

Dick move by the Sens player for sure but you cannot do that, Reilly. Very over the top reaction. That's something you MIGHT do if someone throws a dangerous cheapshot on your goalie or something but this is basically just some guy saying neener neener.

I'm sure Sheldon Keefe would probably say that it's appropriate

Both in the wrong. Grieg for acting like it’s peewee hockey & slapshotting into an empty net goal like a twat. But then Reilly for doing what he did. Just trip the guy or something to send a message.

They aren’t going to give him 5 games. Trouba literally chopped a players head and got a 5k fine. If Rielly gets 5, the leafs and NHLPA are appealing that immediately. I don’t even think Rielly gets an in person hearing for this.

Not the same thing at all.

That happened between two players already battling. It came right after the whistle but they were engaging with each other.

Like the example I gave of it being 10 games for coming off the bench, coming off a bench doesn't make a fight more violent than two people already on the ice fighting. The reason it is a steep penalty is because it has such potential to disturb order.

They can't set a precedent that a player can cross check another player from 15 feet away with no previous contact blindsided after a whistle when the game is seconds away from being done.

If players get the whiff they can do that without huge consequences you're going to see it a lot more. Imagine during the playoffs the game is over, just wait for the star to turn around and jump him, take the 5k fine.

It disrupts order. He is getting a big suspension. His only saving grace is that he isn't a repeat offender.
