Do you have documentation of this code?

It’s an unwritten code, all sports have their set of things you just don’t do to big time the other players. Basketball you don’t score when you’re up big at the end of the game or dunk. You let the clock run out. Same kinda deal with football.

Doesn’t mean anything to thee average fan but these professional athletes hold one another to those sets of rules. I can guarantee the vets on Ottawa are probably laying into Ridley for doing that. Happy over the win but probably not happy about him as a young guy doing that.

Cross check to the face of an unsuspecting player after the whistle for no reason?

Gotta be 5+ games regardless of if he has any suspension history.

Gotta get those cheap shots to the head out of the game.

What a dumb play by Rielly. He's got mental problems.

All the posters in here screaming about the “code” and how dare you slap shot a puck into an empty should be fine with a senators player hunting down a leafs player next season and cross checking them in the face.

You know cause hockey is “emotional” and “f*** around and find out”

Would love to see the reactions if Marner’s neck is bent in half by a stick next season.
even sens players are saying no comment
like I said earlier, If I leaf player did the same thing I would expect him to get jumped, I would 100% call him out, its classless
if he got injured, my opinion obviously would change on the method of attack, but my opinion that they needed an asswhoopin wouldnt

Rielly seems like he was angry and frustrated that he was about to lose the game against a bitter rival.

I don't know why he would have these feelings though.

Shouldn't he be used to losing by now?

Not the same thing at all.

That happened between two players already battling. It came right after the whistle but they were engaging with each other.

Like the example I gave of it being 10 games for coming off the bench, coming off a bench doesn't make a fight more violent than two people already on the ice fighting. The reason it is a steep penalty is because it has such potential to disturb order.

They can't set a precedent that a player can cross check another player from 15 feet away with no previous contact blindsided after a whistle when the game is seconds away from being done.

If players get the whiff they can do that without huge consequences you're going to see it a lot more. Imagine during the playoffs the game is over, just wait for the star to turn around and jump him, take the 5k fine.

It disrupts order. He is getting a big suspension. His only saving grace is that he isn't a repeat offender.

He ain’t getting a big suspension. Probably same as Matthews cross check, two games. Rielly has no prior history. Team will appeal anyways.

Bullshit. It is not against any code. The kid was excited about making all the leaf fans in the Sens barn cry on the way home.

It's not poor sportsmanship to show enthusiasm when the game was still close. This was like a GWG!

For those who don’t follow the Sens, Greig really is a good young player. But he’s a bit of a character.

He got suspended A few years ago for carving up Schieffele in a preseason game, if I remember correctly.

I'm a Sens fan, but I hope we trade Greig. The game was over and the Leafs played really hard. I also think it's irresponsible because the Sens fans who have to get out of the arena were out in danger by him.

His slap shot probably cause like 5 world star fights at the arena that wouldn't have happened.

And if his stick breaks he looks like a dingus. That's his choice.

If its that big a deal then drop the gloves and fight him.

Crosschecking him in the head isn't the way to go.

A team of sore losers, take the L.

Leafs fans trying to frame this as some kind of W while their #1 defenseman will likely get suspended for crosschecking a 21 year old dude due to not liking the way he scored an empty net goal with 5 seconds left to play, and while also losing 3 out of 4 games against the Sens.

Hilarious. The last decade really did roast their brains.

I love Greig for doing it. Hope it becomes a habit against the Leafs.

It's an exhausting thought when the same fans that are cheering on an intent to injure because feelings were hurt by an empty net clapper will whine and cry when they are on the receiving end of it.

Go ask any person who’s played the game if they are accepting that. I probably wouldn’t cross check him, but I def would have just buried him after the goal which I think Rielly should have done. Cross Check was a bit much, but just shoulder to shoulder bury him. Gets the message across you ain’t gonna just do whatever you want.
