I was surprised the slap shot drew that much of a reaction. I would have hated it more if he skated it all the way to the goal line. Way more surprised that the guy who did the "gritty" after OT winner with Detroit is still walking the earth unharmed..... but that's likely a post for another thread. Where's Billy Smith or Ron Hextall when you need them? lol

The guy's not wrong.

The only thing the Leafs have ever been good at is leading the NHL in suspensions.

They are also the softest.
He is absolutely, unequivocally, and utterly wrong.

I've been proving it for pages now. Like, an easy dozen posts tearing down the argument from every angle that the Leafs lead the NHL in suspensions. They do not. They aren't even close.

If the intent of the Leafs organization was to show up their opponent you are absolutely right.

In this instance the intent was to allow a kid to realize his dream of playing in the NHL. Keefe made it happen even if it was a brief ~40 seconds. There was no taunting or show boating. The kid just got to live a dream that would not be possible under any other circumstances.

Valiant try at using logic with this particular poster. Bravo.

Is that so?

Because San Jose has 21

Buffalo, Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver have 18

They still looking like an odd duckling to you? Doesn't look like much of a statistical outlier to me when, over the course of 15 seasons, there is less than 1 suspension/season difference between the top 9 suspended teams.

Want to look at teams that have 16 and 15 suspensions during that timeframe? I guarantee it's not gonna make it look any better.

Hey, maybe looking at the most suspended leafs players during that period will tell you they were the odd ducklings:

Kadri: 5
Carter: 2
Clarkson: 2

... Nope.

Yes it does. The leafs have notoriously been one of the softest teams in the league. It doesn’t match up. They also draw among the least powerplay opportunities. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy, I think it’s simply avoiding the noise that comes with Toronto.

Keefe is practically always whining and deflecting, or smirking insolently when his players make an egregious play such as this.

Earlier in this thread it has been shown clearly Toronto is very hardly leading the NHL is suspensions under Parros.
I don't work today and I got nothing but time on my hands. I can keep laying down #NHLsuspensionfacts all day long.

Tell us more about the respect the Leafs showed when they blewout Montreal, put their top PP unit out at the end of the game, and put a rookie in net for the last minute

Who said anything about respect?

My point was that it’s extremely common for players and teams to react emotionally to things in this league, real or perceived.

Lol what a bunch of soft crybabies getting mad at someone puttin a puck into the empty net after the horn. Pathetic.
I don't know about that....I suppose you can argue why, but it's pretty standard procedure and I think you can dispute the level of reaction, but I'm pretty sure almost every hockey player is going to agree it warrants a reaction (even the offending team would agree it warrants a reaction). I started playing hockey about 40 years ago....so played a lot of games and watched a lot of games I wasn't playing and I can say with pretty good certainty that there is a reaction 100% of the time when something like that happens. Even a shot slightly after the whistle garners some growls and thoughts around how hard was it, how late was it, etc.

No one is getting suspended for doing that to Rielly.

Do you know how hard it is to get suspended for some kind of action on a Leafs player?

I kid you not Simmonds got crosschecked in the face proper twice from two different players with a couple of seconds. And there wasn't even a penalty.

Getting suspended for doing that to Reilly? Have a day off.
just wondering what you believe the league has to gain by encouraging violence against Toronto’s players?

Literally happens all the time in basketball.

It’s when a lot of the more spectacular dunks happen.

I guess the video cuts off before the other team beats the crap out of him.

Tangentially, some HFers are constantly wringing their hands about why NHL isn’t cool like the NBA and those same folks would probably want the guy to do a simple layup if they applied the NHL code.

I mean it makes sense. NBA players trash talk all the time. Hockey players are all about respect and code and honor. So much less personality is allowed in the sport.

I highly doubt every team is that soft emotionally. Maybe some.
Its the equivalent of a player ripping a bow and arrow past an opposing teams bench after a goal. Its scumbag stuff and plain embarrassing for his teammates.

And yes, every single team in the league responds to something like this. I'll be the first one to say Rielly went overboard with the crosscheck. But every team would respond in some capacity. To say otherwise just shows lack of understanding

Toronto is upset that they're getting more attention for their player being an absolute knob on a national broadcast that is forced down the throats of the rest of the country. Fans, staff and players then proceed to bend over backwards to defend Rielly, making the whole franchise look even worse then Rielly did. Then the mind frame is that the league, or DOPS, or the world, or whoever, has it out for the Leafs to make them look bad or what ever...as someone with no stake in this, it's mind bending.

As a side note, can someone explain to me how a slap shot on an empty net is some how disrespectful, and deserving of a "response" of any kind?
Rielly and now his coach are both.....

I made a whole thing earlier about not engaging with Diverting the Subject arguments, so I'm just gonna stick with that tactic.

We're talking about suspensions here. Not penalties.

If you wanna jam on that, @ me with a cogent argument and back it up with the wealth of stats that are available

Only in the NHL would fans and critics be more satisfied if Reilly actually dropped his gloves and starting beating this guy with his fists. Break a nose, break a jaw, loose some teeth. Whatever. He wouldn't have even got suspended. But a crosscheck to the shoulder / ultimately his head is cause for a 10 game suspension. Not suggesting a stick is better than a fist. All I know is that they both hurt.

Weird world we live in.
The difference is using simply your body (hands) vs. a weapon
