I wore one of these beauties in pee wees, as a goalie. Not sure about CSA approval, if that was even a thing in 1979, but they offered as much or more protection as their CCM contemporaries.

And I would stand to be corrected but I don’t recall seeing this in the NHL on anyone, which may have been because they were butt ugly moreso than that they weren’t safe. The Gretzky style Jofa helmets were the most unsafe thing and several players wore them.

There was a change in minor hockey where CCM and Cooper upgraded their helmets, more robust and thicker plastic and padding. I remember that helmet being worn before that as a peewee. When I hit the last year of peewee we had cages and the new standard helmets.

If anyone cares, google Patterson hockey helmets, I wore a light blue one before the cage came in. No idea where it came from. That's a goofy looking lid, and me with my big 70's glasses and hair as a shaggy 10 yr old.

Here's a hockey card with Craig Ramsey wearing the SK300, which was similar to the SK500, but not the same.

I think these were the cooper helmets that were pre CSA approved. I know that I (Dad) had to buy me a new style CCM helmet around the mid 70's as the prior CCM model was not allowed. I believe Cooper also were forced to upgraded their helmet design. The upgraded Cooper design was used in Jr D and major junior A during the late 70's and early 80's. I strongly doubt this helmet was worn with a goal cage in the NHL at anytime as by the time cage masks were worn it would have been on the updated model, not this old one.

Crazy times, weren't they? We went, in mid season (I'm guessing same mandate) and had to switch helmets. We had one guy who wore a helmet and just a mouthgard who had to find a visor or cage. One guy had a Butch Goring style helmet (Cooper sk10?) and outer mouth guard, and had to get a new helmet with visor to play. I had the Cooper sk100and outer mouth guard, and had to switch to the CCM Pro Guard, with visor.

Pretty abrupt changes, no grandfathering in. Was it maybe 1976 or 1977?

CCM Pro Guard.

As for Bouchard helmet, I am skeptical.

Some pics aren't captioned so I don't know who these guys are.

Check out the raised poorly sown letters on the sweaters, they were not jerseys then eh? How about those identical socialist blockers as well!! I think the mask worn on the right was a prototype for a Lada!:snide:

That is indeed a young Tretiak on the left, and I am pretty sure that is Grigory Mlkrtychan on the right.

Great historic picture!!!

Help!

I'm trying to definitively identify the Cleveland (most likely - could possibly be Jacksonville) goaltender in the photo at the start of this Twitter thread.

If you like photos from that era - specifically, Gerry Gray, Ted Ouimet, Fern Rivard, and Ernie Wakely - or if you want to help solve a puzzle, please check it out. Thanks!

That could very well be Gary Kurt. He played for the Cleveland Barons of the AHL for 2 seasons (1969-70 & 1970-71). His final pro season was 1976-77 with the Phoenix Roadrunners of the WHA.
