I believe Scotiabank Arena is actually located in the building you see on the opposite side of the tracks from the Royal York, along the right edge of the photo. The arena was built in the old Canada Post building, which is what that building appears to be. Cool photo, thanks for sharing!
Thanks.

Yes, you're right, Scotiabank Arena would be mostly where the postal building is in the 1974 photo.

I think only the eastern and southern walls were saved, and the rest of the postal building was demolished and rebuilt as the arena.

And - looking at Google Earth - Scotiabank Arena and its attached buildings would also partly extend to where the tracks are, in particular where the tracks turn (i.e. just west of Bay Street). The tracks parallel to Union Station are, of course, still there.

I *have* seen this photo of Mike Liut before, but some of you may not have (and I have a question related to it):

Question: what's on his mask? It's not a falcon (I think) and I can't figure it out.

Rossland, BC Women's hockey team in 1912 and 1916. They called themselves "World Champions" in 1914, which seems audacious, but they did win four BC women's championships between 1900 and 1918. For those not familiar, Rossland is a (now) small town just outside of Trail, and the area at the time was in the midst of a mining boom - silver more than gold, but also lead. There was a lot of money around at the time, and one would expect that these women were wives and daughters of the mining company bigwigs, rather than being related to the guys who were down in the mines.

Also, nice to see the fairer sex carry the tradition of refusing to smile in hockey photos. Lighten up, Frances.

Both photos from the Columbia Basin Institute.

I THINK it might be an attempt at a Falcon's talon or claws, cause when I zoomed in there's the one toe over the nose, and it looks like the other toes go along the temple regions of Liut's head. The forehead area is the birds leg.

Thats what I see anyway when I zoomed in on my phone. Am I in the ballpark here?

I think you're right. Even though the official Bowling Green logos didn't feature that exact silhouette:

... this logo for Bowling Green's aviation program does come really close:

I'm not sure how long that logo has been around, so it might not be the direct source of Liut's design. But the inspiration seems to come from the same general idea. It's just a little odd looking because of how it's cut off at the top.
