September 28, 1984 – Rare and unique photo from Mario Lemieux’s first ever preseason game played at Troy, NY. Marty Howe (# 27) and Mario Lemieux (# 66). Both teams were playing with their away jerseys
Pittsburgh held their 1984 training camp in Mt.Lebanon, PA.
September 18 – Mario hit the ice for a two hour workout with the rest of the squad.
Pittsburgh had a total of 47 players in the camp.
September 19 – The team had its first scrimmage in front of 350 fans (700 capacity) who each payed $ 1 to see Mario play. Mario didn’t score but the crowd got to see a fight between Pat Boutette and Marty McSorley.
September 21 – Mario crashed into the boards and hurt his knee during training camp drills. Later in the afternoon he scored two goals out of seven goals in a scrimmage game. 425 people payed $ 1 each to watch the game.
September 22 – Pittsburgh lost their first preseason game 2-11 to Hartford. Mario did not play due to a sore knee. Mario was slated to play with Arto Javanainen (RW) and Warren Young (LW), instead Tom Roulston replaced Mario on that line.
September 23 – Pittsburgh lost their second preseason game 3-4 to Detroit. Mario was still on the sidelines nursing his injured knee.
September 26 – Black vs Gold in a full game scrimmage. Mt.Lebanon was sold out with 700 fans paying $ 5 each to see Mario play. Mario played with braces on both knees. Mario scored a third period game winner for the Blacks in a 3-2 win, plus added one assist. Aside from that Marty McSorley pummelled Tim Hrynewich who had to leave the ice with blood trickling down his face.
September 28 – The above photo taken from this game. Pittsburgh lost 3-4 to Hartford. This was Mario’s first preseason game. He assisted on a goal by Mike Bullard.
September 29 – Pittsburgh won their first preseason game, beating New Jersey 4-2. Mario scored two goals and assisted on one goal scored by Mike Bullard.
October 3 – Pittsburgh lost 3-4 to New Jersey in their fifth preseason game (1-4 record). Mario played on a line with Arto Javanainen, a right wing who was shifted to left wing, and veteran Rick Kehoe. Mario assisted on two goals, one by Kehoe and one by Bullard (a PPG).
October 7 – Pittsburgh played their sixth and last preseason game, beating Detroit 5-0.
Mario played on a line with Pat Boutette and Rick Kehoe. He scored the last goal of the game.
It was a patented Lemieux goal. He took a pass in full stride, fended off defenceman John Barrett all the way until he was just in front of goalie Eddie Mio, and then just flipped the puck behind Mio. Mario also had an assist in the game.
In four preseason games, Mario had three goals and five assists.
