Born in England but grew up in Brandon, Manitoba, this player had quite a reputation as a dirty player. He died (aged 37) in a Seattle hospital in 1919 because of the world wide influenza epidemic. Reason he was in Seattle in the first place was the Stanley Cup finals.

Phil is holding Gordie to make sure he doesn't have room to throw that elbow he caught the first time they played against each other...

1979/80 - Gordie Howe of the Hartford Whalers and Phil Esposito of the New York Rangers. Prior to that season, the last time the two played against each other was during the 1970/71 season when Howe played for the Detroit Red Wings and Esposito was a member of the Boston Bruins.

October 10, 1998 – Calgary against San José in Japan (Dave Roche # 25)

“It’s f***ing ridiculous. Two NHL teams playing in Japan, why are we going over there? It’s not fair to the organizations. My question is why?. I’m all for promoting the game by going to cities in the United States or Canada that are going to have a team. Is (Gary) Bettman going to Japan? I don’t think so.”

“I can’t wait until New York or New Jersey has to go. To me, it’s another stupid thing Bettman has come up with. I wish someone would tell me why we’re doing this. We travel more than any team in the league and we’re traveling some more. If it was a four or five hour trip, I’d have no problem. I have no problem with the country or anything. We’re not going over there sightseeing — we’re going to work. I just don’t understand why we’re doing this.” Bernie Nicholls, San Francisco Chronicle in October 1998
