January 28, 1934 – This was Eddie Shore’s first game back from his 16 game suspension after his near fatal hit on Ace Bailey. Here we see New York’s Bun Cook scoring a goal on Tiny Thompson.
On the ice we also see a helmeted Nels Stewart and standing a helmeted Eddie Shore (who collected two assists in the game). BTW, all four are Hall of Famers

Shore after the game: “To tell the truth, I was a little bit worried about the reception I was going to get. New York hockey fans always greet me with a storm of good-natured booing and when I stepped out onto the Madison Garden ice, I expected to get the usual greeting. As soon as I came through the gate, the crowd went wild and it was several seconds before I realized the fans were cheering me. What a reception. What great sportsmen those New York hockey fans are. Why, they cheered me to the rafters every time I made a move, and how they yelled when Ching Johnson flattened me. I’ll never forget them. I’ve been around hockey a long time,but I’ve never heard the like of it.”

I had thought this occurred a few years earlier, but then obviously I am wrong.

The Canadians played The Sabres this night in Montreal, and wore their then "Road Reds", while Buffalo wore their "Home Whites"

Aurele Joliat, who would have been 84 at this time had just been announced. He came skating out on to the ice wearing a cap.

He got caught up in the moment, and was moving well for an 84 year old man, but didn't see the carpet runner until it was too late, and wiped out on it.

Buffalo Sabres Ric Seiling offered his hand to help Aurele up, but Aurele had too much pride, and got back up on his own, and dusted himself off.

The utter joy Joliat displayed when coming out for one last hurrah was touching. The smile, the cap, and doffing of the cap, the crowds ovation, it was a magic moment. It's a shame such a legend took that fall - it wasn't meant to happen.

Fate can be cruel at times.

Edit, it wasn't Ric Seiling and he had no cigar. Wondering if I'm confusing two different events.

Interesting how Joliat described the hockey of the early 1960's so much faster than the hockey of the 1930's. The evolution of the rules and the equipment more than the athlete, in my opinion. Also interesting how there seemed to be a debate about the ramifications of taking the violence out of hockey even back then. Seems to be a debate that has always existed and will never go away.

Here’s the story: 1952, Korean War, members of two Canadian battalions: the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the Royal 22nd Regiment (R22R) turned the frozen river into an ice rink for a hockey match. The glacial winter air didn’t stop the soldiers’ passion for their sport. The match took place “in the sound of the heavy guns of nearby U.S. Army artillery”, just a short distance from the front lines of the struggle against Communist forces.”

I believe that this photo was taken after the last regular season game of the 1990/91 season.
Toronto obviously didn't make the playoffs. Some of his teammates had fun with it and threw a few coins at him.

And that 1985 clip at the Forum...! No matter how many times you see it, it's pure gold. Aurèle, aged 83, not only gets up twice after falling on his ass, but then does a little dance across the Forum ice to the delight of the crowd.

He died the following year, just days after the Habs had won their 23rd Stanley Cup.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find too many stats about Juha but did note that in 1971-72 he played for JoKP Joensuu before playing his longest stint with Tappara Tampere where he spent 7 seasons from 1972-73 through to 1979-80. It would appear he played his final season with Kiekkoreipas Lahti in 1980-81. Some accomplishments of his include three Finnish championships as well as three SM-silver and one SM-bronze.
