Dude, it's clear. You're just not used to reading legal documents. The phrase I quoted is right after they talk about advancing in the draft order. The limitation is applied to the team that wins a draw to advance. The Florida pick BELONGS to montreal, so if a draw is won, it's Montreal winning it.

Stop creating a dilema whrre there is none.
After reading it again, I think you’re right on that point. The sentence is written very poorly, but there isn’t really anything else it could mean in the alternative. Cheers 👍

Even further than that, the FLA wouldn’t count as a win for MTL either. It would be Florida’s lottery win.

So by some miracle, if all of the stars align, the Habs could potentially draft:
- lottery win in 2022 MTL’s pick (no advance in draft order)
- lottery win in 2023 MTL’s pick (1/5 years, MTL advances in draft order)
- lottery win in 2023 FLA’s pick (does not count for MTL lottery win)
- lottery win in 2024 MTL’s pick (2/5 years, MTL advances in draft order)
Ad Calgary's pick in which ever year it is in for the mix.

Did you come in expecting habs fans to not want to get good draft picks?

Of course I expect them to want a good pick. There’s a borderline obsession from a very large fanbase in Montreal with a very small fanbase’s team. Do you know how many Hab fans have “come in peace” to the Panthers sub-forum to ask about whether or not so-and-so looks any good? You know, they’re all asking for a friend or something.

It’s generally very arrogant and unlikable behavior. Like the owner of a major restaurant chain showing up to a local restaurant and asking how business is doing after a known flood in the building. The locals like the food and don’t want what you’re trying to do. Please get out of my restaurant.

That's like 2% of Habs fans, but I've seen what you've explained on Nashvilles and Carolinas boards in the past couple years.

Very obnoxious behavior.

Back on topic, Montreal might be willing to part with a third of your guys are looking at selling .

We are legion, so there will always be quite a few trolls and rats onboard.

It's a fact of life that the more people there are, the more likely you'll have a fringe group who give the rest a bad name.

Point in fact; the astounding number of Karens and Kevins in the States.

Also, I want to point out that the real fantasy they're having is picking both Bedard and Fantili.

To both of you, certainly I apologize for coming off as though I mean “all Habs fans.” Not the intention. I equally loathe when people make sweeping statements about Americans or anything like that.

Actually, I don't think so. They retained #1 last year so that counts as a win. You can only win 2x in a 5 year span. I assume the Florida pick - if it wins the lottery - counts as a Montreal win.

Anyone know for sure?
Last year doesn't count because Habs didn't "advance". It only counts if you win the lotto and jump ahead of your original placement

Hopefully, the Habs do a Leaf-inspired tank and trade off enough veterans for picks/futures in order to drop themselves one point back of second-last.
They could just pull and Edmonton and consistently suck for over a decade burning through all of the first over all's u til they land a generational player?

Depends on what you mean by “counts as a win”. If you’re implying that it “counts” as one of the two times Montreal can win in a five year period, that’s incorrect, as the 2/5 limits the number of times a team can win through improving its draft position. Montreal didn’t improve its draft position when it won the lottery last year, so it doesn’t count towards the 2/5.
I dont think thats how it works. pretty sure the rule is there so the same team doesnt keep winning 1st overall year after year

Habs could turn their team around very quickly all things considered. Only have to iron out their back end but should be interesting to spectate this rebuild at a glance.
Their D needs a lot of work even if they draft the right guys on D it still tends to take a few years before they are cornerstones.

I already posted the language from the nhl.

NHL announces changes to Draft Lottery format

(3) Limit on Teams Winning a Lottery Draw
No single team will be able to advance in the Draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two (2) times in any five (5) year period. This limitation will not affect a Club's ability to retain its presumptive Draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the Club moving down in Draft Order to the extent other Clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws”

tru, this rule change seems kind of pointless. the chances of a team winning 1st overall or any lottery spot twice in 5 years is pretty low. I figured this rule would be to eliminate tanking. oh well

Montreal shouldn't even be in the discussion to get him. Caufield and Suzuki are more than enough to build around.
They are not more than enough. Neither of them is top 50 in scoring.

And then you have the worst depth in the league by far. Armia, Drouin... 0 goals
Evans, Pitlick both have 1 goal.
After Suzuki and Caufield, Dach is the only other with more than 20 pts (due to playing with the first 2).
so we have 3 players above 20 pts right now, same number as Chicago.

Hughes has improved the depth a little by adding Dach and Monahan but Bergevin left too much of a mess to be fixed quickly.
