This thread assumes a 1st+ is available for Monahan at the deadline.

In the poll I made up what I consider to be a plausible value for what an extension would cost.

Should be a 'both' category too lol

That contract is a bit pricier than what I think it would be too
I'd go with a 3yr x 4M for starters

For me thing with Monahan is,
He's not a speed demon to begin with.
Like the way you see Monahan playing on the ice right now,
Odds are he 'looks' like this until 34-35 easy

If you get something great for him
Fine do it,
If they don't trade him and want to sign him , fine do it

Perfect scenario, trade him, and then sign him lol :D

But deep deep down, personally, I keep him on this team next 3 years easy

If the habs are not near a playoff spot, then 100% trade him.

We can revisit signing him during the offseason. Those numbers probably don't make sense for the habs though. There's monahan injury history, but also you have to consider that Roy, Farrell, Beck, Heineman, etc. are all prospects that will need a top 9 spot in the very near future. Having Monahan means 1 less top 9 spot.

Like the player, but if we're getting a 1st + then it's a clear trade. If he wants to sign in the summer, he's more than welcome back.

The spots for Roy, Farrell, etc can come from the soon to be departures of Pearson, Dvorak, Harvey-Pinard and possibly Anderson and Gallagher.

So let me see if I got this right.

We are desperately trying to shed the salaries of our overpaid injury prone players but yet people want to give a 4 year 4.5 million dollar contract to a guy who’s had major surgeries and heading into his 30’s?

What are people smoking?

I'm smoking some "Monahan is a better player than Armia".

If he stays healthy you have to extend him extend him. It's a no brainer. He will be better than whatever draft pick we can get.

However if there's any doubt about his health than you have to trade him.

4 years is a bit much. I would stick to 2-3 years. Give him the A also, he's deserved it.

Considering his injury history, if he somehow makes it to the deadline healthy then I'm on the trade bandwagon at the moment, and I'd prefer the pick be deferred to 2025 if possible. Pick could be a useful chip as part of a transaction for a long term need down the line.

Only way I consider keeping him is if someone like Anderson gets unloaded instead, and even then I'm iffy because of the injuries.

This discussion ultimately is decided by what Monahan wants in his next contract. Too long or too much doesn't make any sense for Montreal's future plans. If he wants to stay and is willing to take a value contract, then keep him, as he can be traded or buried without much burden if he nosedives.

My guess is he probably wants something close to market value if he has a big year, as this could be his last opportunity for a big contract (assuming it's 3-4 years) considering his injury history.

It kind of depends where the team is at, if the team takes another step forward and is on track to be ~10th from the bottom or better then it makes a lot more sense to re-sign him then to take a late 1st. If however the team collapses and is on track for another bottom-5 finish then you you have to take the 1st.

Regardless 4 years is a tough sell, with his injury history and age I would hesitate to go over 3 years, and 2 would be the ideal. We are better off giving more money over fewer years and then seeing where things stand. So for example 2 years @6m would probably be a better deal for us then 4 years @4.5m.

Trade, helps the tank and gets a good pick (or trade chip) out of him (again).

To trade him it better be an over-payment and if not, just keep him because he's still young and brings an element this team hadn't had in years
with his injury history, he may not command more than a 2nd at the TDL.

If that's the case, I'd rather re-sign him.

Yeah. Love love love Monahan but not a 4.5x4.

In an injury free vacuum that’s highway robbery but…

I think we can get him on shorter term. I think he wants to stay. God I’d still probably sign him to that with a gun to my head.

He just seems like such a beauty where he’d probably agree to both.

I’d give him that deal if he allows us to trade him at the deadline first.

I'll go in the minority and say I want to keep him. He doesn't prevent us from losing but he's fun to watch. We're just gonna pick a bust with the late first anyways.
