The refs absolutely jobbed Ottawa multiple times this game. Svech loosely holding his stick shouldn't have taken off their goal, the slashing call on...Stuzle?...was him slashing the ice, which isn't a rule break, and then the too many men should only have been called if Ottawa possessed the puck while they had 5 guys out there, but they didn't.

For the amount of times we've been screwed by officiating, it'd be poor taste not to also acknowledge it when it benefits us.

They can also call too many men if the extra player effects the play can't they? Even without possession. They jumped off the bench super early (Ottawa player was between the faceoff circles I think on the replay so I think you can argue it should still be a penalty since they were able to get defenders back quicker then they should have.

Yea I've never heard there has to be possession, having someone jump on before the other guy jumps off is a huge advantage and teams would do it constantly if the other team had possession

Orlov got a penalty on Stutzle that he didn't deserve. Plus, interference on Svetch...plus, etc.

Yeah, Canes got called for it a decade ago in an OT game when Semin jumped off the bench a bit too early to stop an odd man rush. He got called even though he didn't touch the puck

It’s usually up to the referee discretion. As long as there’s a player going off the ice (and there was in Ottawa’s case), most of the time the officials will let it go unless the players that are jumping on touch the puck. That’s why you always see the puck being shot at the benches whenever there’s a car wreck of a line change, because teams try and force that too many men call. It’s also why you see them jumping out of the way of the puck in similar situations.

They called that too many men because the guy changing was 20 feet away from the boards when the guy changing for him jumped to get back on the back check.

They also blew the puck over glass call and there was another too many men penalty they missed where the guy came on the ice and played the puck. They were brutal all game.

Not much to argue about there. Easy TMM call with a Sen very far beyond the 5 foot limit and loafing back to the bench, while his substitute is actively joining the play going the other way. They missed the legal change by like 20-30 feet and had five men out there for quite a long time.

You’re right about the Sens getting hosed on the other two calls.

Edit: also I’m pretty sure the second minor penalty should have been negated after the 5v3 goal. The Pinto penalty is listed at 17:18 and the Aho goal at 19:18. In the NHL rulebook, a goal that comes exactly 2:00 after a penalty is regarded as having taken place after the penalty expired.

I assume his track record is pretty consistent for a #3 though. Most #3s usually spend most of their time in the AHL and are not good enough to hold down a #2 spot.

I was kind of half watching on my phone while out and about last night, but from what I saw (most of first 2 periods), Ghost was our best player by a mile. From the opening shift onward. Was also the most aggressive and confident I’ve seen Walker as well.

That pairing has been better than anyone could’ve reasonably hoped and has been a huge reason the offseason departures haven’t hurt us as much as they could’ve.

Spence the fence came up big, hope he continues. I’m not saying hand him the keys but there are definitely worse 3rd string goalies. If kochetkov is back at practice already and should be good to go soon we should be ok with him for a while.

With this game this afternoon though being less than 24 hours between and a western opponent they may just throw perets out there and see what happens. I don’t actually hate that idea either since it’s not like the blues are scary dangerous or a factor in the canes standings at all

martin took several "bumps" or hits that would have injured freddie for months, and PK probably for a bit as well. Both are somewhat fragile goalies, where it doesn't seem Martin is at all.

Martin has, so far, not really had a bad game for us in OUR system with OUR defense, as far as I can recall. Honestly? At this point I dont even care if Andersen comes back at all. Do what you can to recover his cap space for later in the year and start looking for replacement options NOW. After his injury history and playoff performance last year, I think he's used all his good will with most canes fans. The dude is simply too much of a drag on the team.

Yeah Martin got lucky on two exchanges last night. Many other teams would have finished those two chances that he got lucky on. Honestly I dont even expect andersen back ever if he needs surgery. Just move on and get that cap back however you can
