If we are in a playoff spot comes TDL we absolutely keep him. If he is healthy all year, we should strongly consider signing him. Terms might be a problem.

I understand he may fetch a late 1st but at this stage of our team, i consider playoff experience more important than another late 1st pick who has strong odds of amounting to nothing or being 2-4 years for being a contributor.

I like Monahan a lot. But given his history 4 yrs is a lot.
I believe 3.3m$ per x 3 is fair!! (As long as the team doctors give him a clean bill of health)

Habs are in their last year of the rebuild, it’s time to start retaining solid vets as opposed to trading them!!

Savard, Matheson, Anderson and Monahan….these are the guys I’m keeping around to oversee the growth of our youth.

By default, Gallagher will also be there as his contract is unmovable.

I still believe we’re a bottom 3rd team in the league this season….we’ll get another good pick but we need to start thinking 3yrs down the road and a healthy Monahan part of that nucleus is IMO a must.

Depends on the offer. A late first won't do it for me. He has too much value to the team, and he easily has 4-5 good years left to contribute, if his hip and groin issues have become manageable. When he is healthy, he is one of the 2-3 best forwards on the team. It's not a slam dunk to trade that for a late first.

You trade him...it would be bad business not doing it.
For what? This board was over the moon when we traded Toffoli for a 1st.

So far Mesar hasn’t looked great but that could change.

A Monahan trade would yield about about that, a late first that can “potentially “ be impactful.

What’s good business is a Monahan that can stabilize and lead a room all while still being productive and responsible on the ice!!

He will be gone.

They know where they are and they aren't rushing it. They're not giving a player with an extensive injury history money and term when they can accumulate more future assets to build the team for the window they are attacking.

I'll go in the minority and say I want to keep him. He doesn't prevent us from losing but he's fun to watch. We're just gonna pick a bust with the late first anyways.
As most teams would.

If we were last year I’d say trade him, but we are almost there as taking the next step so keep him, he’s more valuable to us leading our young group then another late round pick.

I wish you were right, but I don't believe it. There still is a huge lack of talent at forward, and I don't trust our goalies.

Unless the goal is to make the playoffs, then yes we could challenge next year and make them in 2 years.

But if the goal is to actually build a contender, we need to draft high a few more years. Trade guys like Anderson as soon as a good offer comes our way.

Habs are NOT almost there. Players that should make the difference form pretender to contender - Mailloux, Hudson, Roy etc are years away from being ready. And as Master D said they don't have a goaltender.
If the Habs are out of contention approachjng the trade deadline nd Monahan wants to go to a contender you trade him. If he also wants to return next season they can agree on the terms of a new deal.

I’d be more inclined to trade him for a solid prospect than a late 1st rounder. I’m aware of his injury history but at the same time we’ll need to start thinking about keeping good veteran players around if we’re to compete at some point.

I think we have to support this current core gradually. We're not going to get another top 5 pick with or without Monahan and I'd rather have a guy like him supporting that wave than Gallagher. Monahan was an elite player, gally has always been a grinder who taught Lehkonen how not to score. We need more Perry and Kovalchuk influences and Monahan is that.

What message does it send to dump Monahan, Allen, or anyone else who plays well early in the season? Play like losers please. May as well send RHP, Guhle, and others to the AHL and call up worse players to artificially finish lower. It's ok to tank when you don't have talent, you can't ask talented players to suck.

Everyone go look at San Joses roster and tell me even injured and trading guys out we have any chance to compete with them for last place. Then do Chicago, Anaheim, and a few others. Even the mcdavidless oilers have a worse roster than us in every aspect except draisatl.

ONly way we're that low is if Nick suzuki goes down, this board underrates him so bad. Or we bring back ducharme.

Yup, and Roy, Mailloux Hutson will come join a rudderless team if you start trading away all your vets.

Trade some, but not all.

Anderson, Monahan, Matheson and Savard is a solid core of vets that can pave the way and set a solid foundation of habits and professionalism.

Pearson, Dvorak, Gallagher, Wideman are all expendable.

You are making the assumption that we have the players to make a good team. Personally I don't think we do, we have the players that will eventually be a mid tier team. The only players we have that have any trade value are those that you listed as a solid core of vets. Be interesting to see where we go from here.

It really depends where is MTL in March. If they are on the hunt, KH already said he would probably not be a seller.

If MTL is out of the playoff hunt, Monahan will obviously be traded. It's probably what he wants anyway. Doesn't mean he can't sign again with MTL

I think this board is littered with assumptions lol

That’s all we can do really, a bunch of “I believe “, “I think” and “they shoulds”

Truth lies somewhere in there :)

I dunno man…..he signed back here on a 1yr deal….my guess is he likes it in Montreal but I’m sure he wouldn’t be seeking therapy if he was traded to Colorado for a cup run. ;)

Depends on what we would get for him, but do we really want another Mesar and Heineman for him?

If we could do 3x5, or 4x4.5, I'd keep him considering the cap rising and you always have to have veterans to support the youth movement.

I'm 100% convinced he likes MTL and I think there's good chances he signs here again. But as a hockey player and a competitor I'm convinced he would like to be traded to a contender. No idea what his family status is, that could have an impact on his wish too

I voted to trade him on account of his injury history.

However, if they chose to extend him, they should only attempt it if he’d manage to stay healthy into February and limit the offer to 2-3 years. The AAV could vary and as you suggested, could take into account the rising cap.
